RIP Twitter’s Iconic Bird Logo: How a Blue Silhouette Became Internet History

Twitter’s blue bird was retired during the 2023 transition to X—but the symbol’s design history and cultural afterlife are far from over.

The blue Twitter bird did not merely disappear from an app icon. During the company’s July 23–24, 2023 transition to X, it was retired as Twitter’s primary public logo—taking with it one of the clearest visual identities in internet history.

That distinction matters. The bird was replaced as the platform’s customer-facing symbol, but it was not erased from every archive, historical image, trademark record, or privately owned piece of memorabilia. Twitter’s former logo now occupies a different place: no longer the company’s active identity, but a remarkably durable symbol of an earlier internet.

The bird was retired, not erased

On July 23 and 24, 2023, Elon Musk announced that Twitter would abandon its familiar blue bird and move toward an X identity. The change quickly became visible across the service. The bird was replaced on the platform, and the Twitter sign was removed from the company’s San Francisco headquarters.

What ended was Twitter’s use of the bird as its primary public-facing identity. It would be too broad to say that the logo vanished everywhere on that date. Historical websites, archived screenshots, third-party artwork, old software versions, legal records, and personal collections could—and still can—preserve the mark. The retirement was a corporate rebrand, not a deletion of history.

As of August 12, 2026, X’s official brand toolkit is centered on the X logo, account lockups, partnership lockups, and post templates. It does not present the blue Twitter bird as the company’s current primary logo. Twitter’s older brand guidelines remain useful as archival and legal-use material, including their warnings against altering the marks or implying sponsorship and endorsement.

June 6, 2012: when the bird became Twitter

The version most people mean when they remember “the Twitter logo” was introduced on June 6, 2012. Twitter’s own announcement described the simplified bird as a symbol users would begin seeing throughout the service and said that the bird would become the company’s universally recognizable symbol.

The announcement made an unusually confident design claim: Twitter no longer needed its name, rounded typeface, or lowercase t to identify itself. The bird alone was supposed to do that work.

That 2012 mark was a solid, light-blue, right-facing bird with a raised beak and three prominent wing feathers. It was deliberately simple enough to survive at small sizes and distinctive enough to function without a wordmark. The design team’s project materials credit Todd Waterbury, Martin Grasser, and Angy Che at West.

Twitter also explained the construction in geometric terms. The bird was built from overlapping circles, a system intended to suggest the intersection of networks and ideas. Its upward movement suggested flight, freedom, hope, and possibility. Those were the company’s stated design intentions—not proof of a particular commercial result—but they explain why the mark communicated so efficiently.

Twitter’s logo had a longer evolution

It is easy to remember the blue silhouette as if it had existed unchanged from Twitter’s launch. It did not. The company’s identity passed through several distinct stages.

Period What changed Why it matters
2006 Twitter used a wordmark and an inexpensive stock bird illustration associated with the service. This early bird is not the same design as the later corporate symbol.
2009–2010 The company moved toward a bird identity it controlled more directly. The bird became less like an illustration and more like a brand asset.
2010–2012 The mark became a simpler solid silhouette and increasingly independent of the wordmark. The identity began to work at a glance and without the company name.
June 6, 2012 Twitter introduced the simplified bird that became its definitive standalone symbol. The company explicitly declared that the bird itself could represent Twitter.
July 2023 The bird was replaced as the platform’s primary logo during the rebrand to X. The change discarded not just an icon, but the identity system built around Twitter.

The original 2006 bird is commonly connected to illustrator Simon Oxley, whose biography identifies him as the creator of the original Twitter.com bird. That should not be confused with the final 2012 mark, which was credited to Waterbury, Grasser, and Che.

The nickname “Larry” is also widely associated with earlier Twitter bird versions and is often said to reference Boston Celtics player Larry Bird. But the available primary Twitter announcement does not establish that nickname’s origin as an uncontested official fact. It is safest to treat “Larry” as a historically reported nickname rather than the formal name of every Twitter bird design.

Why the bird was such an effective logo

The mark compressed several ideas into one small silhouette.

  • It connected naturally to the word “tweet.” The bird gave an abstract technology service an immediate, memorable metaphor.
  • It suggested movement. The raised beak and upward orientation made the bird feel active rather than static.
  • It worked without text. Once the mark became familiar, users could recognize the service from the silhouette alone.
  • It scaled well. The solid shape remained legible as an app icon, browser element, button, sign, or tiny image.
  • It carried emotional associations. Flight, openness, communication, and possibility were easier to convey through a bird than through a purely abstract corporate symbol.

The geometry reinforced that economy. Twitter’s 2012 explanation described overlapping circles and the intersection of networks and ideas. Martin Grasser’s project description similarly presented the bird as a visual expression of neutrality and connectivity. The result was not an illustration overloaded with detail; it was a compact piece of visual shorthand.

Over time, the bird also became shorthand for a particular phase of internet culture. That is an interpretation rather than a measured brand-recognition claim, but its persistence is difficult to miss. People used the bird to refer not only to a company, but to tweeting, online conversation, breaking news, public argument, celebrity announcements, and the social web itself.

Why replacing it mattered more than changing an icon

In 2012, Twitter’s strategy was to make the bird sufficient. The company said the symbol could stand in for the name. In 2023, the rebrand moved in the opposite direction: the bird—and increasingly the Twitter name and its vocabulary—became secondary to X.

Willow Tree Messenger, Sculpted Hand-Painted Figure
  • Sentiment: "Bringing comfort and love from afar" written on Enclosure Card
  • 5.5”h hand-painted resin figure of a standing female figure in cream dress, with red cardinal perched on her shoulder
  • A gift of comfort and healing for one who has lost, or is very far from, a loved one. A reminder that those we love are always with us, in our memories and in our hearts. Packaged in fitted box for gift-giving
  • Artist Susan Lordi hand carves the original of each Willow Tree piece from her studio in Kansas City MO. This piece is cast from Susan’s original carving and painted by hand
  • Ready to display on a shelf, table or mantel. To clean, dust with soft brush or cloth

That made the transition unusually stark. This was not a routine refinement of a logo’s spacing, color, or typeface. It replaced:

  • the name Twitter with X;
  • the familiar blue bird with a stark X;
  • “tweets” and “retweets” with new or altered terminology;
  • a bird-based metaphor of communication with a symbol connected to Elon Musk’s broader X ambitions and the earlier X.com concept.

The new identity was associated in contemporary reporting with X Corp., X Holdings, and Musk’s stated interest in building an “everything app.” Whatever one thinks of that strategy, the visual message was unmistakable: the company no longer wanted the bird to be the center of its public identity.

That is why the retirement felt culturally larger than a normal rebrand. Twitter had spent years teaching the public that one simple silhouette could represent the service without words. Removing it meant abandoning the proof of that idea as well as the artwork itself.

The difference between a current logo and a historical symbol

A retired logo can remain culturally powerful. The old Apple rainbow, the original Windows flag, and other former corporate marks continue to appear in design histories, fan art, collections, and nostalgia markets even after companies move on.

The Twitter bird is now in that category. It can be used to document the history of social media, illustrate a story about the pre-X platform, or evoke the culture of the 2000s and 2010s. None of those uses makes it X’s current logo.

There is also a legal distinction. Twitter’s archived guidelines state that the bird and other Twitter marks were trademarks and warned users not to modify them, imply sponsorship or endorsement, or use them in ways that conflicted with Twitter’s rights. A sticker, mug, poster, shirt, or office sign found online should therefore not automatically be described as official, licensed, or endorsed merchandise.

What survives: archives, collectibles, and nostalgia

The bird’s afterlife is likely to be strongest in three places: archives, design history, and memorabilia.

Archives preserve the mark as evidence of how the service looked and how the company understood itself. Design students can study the progression from a stock illustration to a controlled corporate silhouette and then to a fully independent icon. Internet historians can use it to identify a period when social platforms still tended to explain themselves through friendly, literal metaphors.

Collectors have a more physical relationship with the symbol. Former signs, office artifacts, printed materials, and other pieces of corporate history can attract serious interest. A Twitter bird sign removed from the former San Francisco headquarters reportedly sold at auction for nearly $35,000, demonstrating that at least some collectors see the mark as an internet-era artifact rather than disposable office branding. That sale is evidence of collector interest, not a standard valuation for Twitter memorabilia.

For a modest keepsake, readers may encounter a Twitter logo sticker or similar retro blue-bird decal through third-party retailers. Availability, seller identity, licensing status, and prices can change, so verify those details at the time of purchase. A third-party item should not be assumed to be official or endorsed simply because it reproduces the former logo.

Broader marketplaces also offer Twitter-themed stickers, mugs, decals, posters, and personalized designs. Those products can be relevant to nostalgia and design-history readers, but individual listings and sellers require separate verification. The safest description is “third-party Twitter-themed merchandise,” not “official Twitter merchandise,” unless authorization is clearly documented.

A small bird with a surprisingly large cultural footprint

The blue bird succeeded because it was both literal and abstract. It made “tweeting” visible, but it did not depict a particular product feature or interface. That gave it room to represent a whole activity: sending a short message into a network and watching it travel.

Its simplicity also made it unusually adaptable. It looked at home on a phone screen, in a news article, on a television graphic, at a conference, or outside a company headquarters. The same basic silhouette could signal a button, a social account, a news source, a cultural reference, or a piece of merchandise.

When X replaced it, the company did not merely choose a different shape. It rejected an identity that had become almost self-explanatory. The bird had made the platform feel like a service built around communication and motion. X presented a more abstract and more expansive ambition.

Was the 2012 bird called Larry?

“Larry” is widely reported as a nickname for earlier Twitter bird iterations, often linked to basketball player Larry Bird. However, the available primary 2012 announcement does not establish the nickname as the official name of every version.

Is the Twitter bird still X’s official logo?

No. As of August 12, 2026, X’s official brand toolkit centers on the X logo and related X brand assets. The Twitter bird remains a historical symbol, not the company’s current primary identity.

Are Twitter bird stickers and mugs official merchandise?

Not automatically. Third-party sellers may offer products featuring the former bird, but a listing should not be called official, licensed, or endorsed without evidence from the seller or rights-holder.

The Bottom Line

Twitter’s iconic bird was retired as the company’s primary logo during the July 2023 move to X. It was not erased from history: the 2012 silhouette remains one of the defining symbols of the social web, preserved in archives, design references, and memorabilia. What died was not every copy of the bird, but the identity system that once made the bird synonymous with Twitter.
