What is the story behind the long-delayed comedy?
The Associated Press reported on March 6, 2024, that the screenplay had spent more than a decade in development, with James Franco and Jim Carrey attached at different points before the eventual production. Those were earlier development stages, not members of the final cast.
Farrelly told the AP, “People were afraid to make it for a long time. But audiences are dying for that kind of comedy.” Efron, speaking about taking on the project after The Iron Claw, said, “I needed to just laugh and have fun.” The AP’s March 6 report covers the film’s development and interviews.
