Richard Gere and Alejandra Silva sold their New Canaan, Connecticut, estate for $10.75 million in October 2024, after announcing plans to move to Madrid. The off-market sale followed their reported $10.8 million purchase in 2022. They did move to Spain later in 2024, but El País reported in November 2025 that the family had returned to the United States after about a year. Their residence in 2026 has not been established by the reporting cited here.

The Connecticut sale at a glance

Detail Reported information
Property 82 Brookwood Lane, New Canaan, Connecticut
Sale date October 2024
Reported sale price $10.75 million, according to CT Insider’s account of town property records
Reported purchase price $10.8 million, paid by Gere and Silva in 2022
Sale type Off-market, according to Realtor.com
Estate size About 32 acres; Realtor.com described 31 acres

The reported sale price was approximately $50,000 below the couple’s reported purchase price, before taxes, commissions, maintenance, renovations or other ownership costs. That comparison alone cannot establish whether the couple made or lost money overall.

What the New Canaan property included

The estate occupied roughly 32 acres and centered on a main house built in 1938, plus a separate guest cottage. Architectural Digest described terraced patios, woodland trails, a natural pond, a waterfall, a pool and multiple gardens.

Conflicting room counts

Published descriptions do not agree on the number of rooms, so the figures should not be combined as if they were one definitive listing. CT Insider reported six bedrooms and 11 bathrooms for the estate based on listing information. Architectural Digest instead described a five-bedroom, nine-bath main house and a three-bedroom, two-bath guest cottage. The differing counts may reflect whether the cottage was included or how spaces were categorized, but the reports do not resolve the discrepancy.

A property with notable previous owners

Gere and Silva reportedly bought the New Canaan property from musician Paul Simon and Edie Brickell in 2022. Realtor.com’s account characterized the eventual sale as off-market rather than a publicly marketed listing.

Why Gere said he was moving to Madrid

In an April 2024 interview with Vanity Fair Spain, as quoted by Architectural Digest and Realtor.com, Gere framed the move as a family decision. Silva is Spanish, and he said living in Madrid would bring her closer to her family, longtime friends and culture.

“For me, going to Madrid is going to be a great adventure because I have never lived full-time outside the United States.”

He also described the arrangement as reciprocal: “She was very generous in giving me six years living in my world, so I think it is only fair that I give her at least another six living in hers.” His explanation was personal and relationship-focused; the cited reports do not present the move as a political statement.

They moved to Spain, then later returned to the United States

Reports in late 2024 said the family relocated to Madrid and were preparing for their first holiday season there. That made the Connecticut sale part of a real near-term move, not merely a speculative announcement.

The timeline changed in a later report. On November 13, 2025, El País, describing an interview Silva gave to ¡Hola!, reported that the couple had returned to the United States after roughly a year in Madrid. Silva characterized the return as a considered family decision and indicated that Spain could remain part of their future, saying that “Spain will always be a point of return” in the published English rendering.

Accordingly, “moving to Madrid” accurately describes the plan announced in April 2024 and the move that followed later that year. It should not be read as proof that Madrid remains their current home. The available reporting does not establish where they live in 2026.

  • The New Canaan estate changed hands in October 2024 for a reported $10.75 million.
  • The sale was reported at about $50,000 below the couple’s 2022 purchase price, but that is not a complete profit-and-loss calculation.
  • The property was a roughly 32-acre historic compound with a 1938 main house, guest cottage, pool and landscaped grounds.
  • Room counts vary by publication, and the conflicting figures should remain qualified.
  • The couple did relocate to Madrid in late 2024, according to contemporaneous reporting.
  • El País reported their return to the United States in November 2025; no newer verified residence is established here.
