But the famous claim that she bought a single $50,000 “ghost detector” is not firmly documented: contemporary reports gave conflicting sums, and the supplier and equipment were never clearly established.
What was Lady Gaga said to have bought?
The story grew during the 2010 Monster Ball era. A May report said a “spirit-seeking sweep” had been arranged at London’s O2 Arena and that Gaga’s team had hired a ghost hunter and spent more than $5,000 on the effort. The report also described specialist electromagnetic-field equipment intended to travel with the tour. RadarOnline’s 2010 account attributed the equipment request to a person identified as Dan Webb, who reportedly said the buyer wanted gear sturdy enough to take on the road.
Those details do not establish a purchase of one identifiable product. Across reports, the story refers to a venue sweep, investigators, “ghostbusting” gear and electromagnetic-field meters. Later headlines compressed those different elements into a “ghost detector,” sometimes describing the price as though it were the cost of a single machine.
How the Ryan story and the O2 report became linked
The O2 Arena sweep was reported in May 2010. Months later, celebrity coverage said Gaga believed a male spirit named Ryan was following her around the world. An IOL report published in November 2010 also said she had held a séance in Belfast during the tour in an attempt to communicate with or dismiss the spirit. These are claims attributed to contemporary celebrity reporting, not independently verified events.

- The EMF Meter Range for Ghost Hunting helps measure the electromagnetic fields to identify appliances that produce high-level emissions, allowing users to make informed decisions about limiting exposure.
- The detectors have been associated with locations, where unexplained phenomena have been reported like alleged haunting.
- The Ghost Hunting Detector operates on a single battery, and reports EMF measurements in five milliGauss ranges.
- Measure wide spectrum of EMFs from 50 Hz up to 20,000 Hz, and it can register a cell phone that is within 2 feet. Measure EMF level protect from potentially harmful long term overexposure to EMFs.
- Convenient push-on/push-off operation; Portable, easy to use, rugged, reliable, super responsive with easy to read LED light scale in dark and sunshine.
The Ryan account and the O2 sweep helped form one memorable narrative, but they do not come from one documented incident. The reports do not establish that the equipment was used to investigate Ryan, that it detected anything, or that it accompanied Gaga to every venue. The FADER revisited the Ryan story in 2018, while later articles repeated the broader tale.
Why the price changes from £3,000 to $50,000
There is no consistent, verified price in the reporting. The figures refer to possibly different combinations of equipment, investigators and venue work, so they should not be treated as interchangeable device prices.

| Reported figure | What the report described |
|---|---|
| £3,000 | Londonist’s 2010 account described an earlier Sunday Mirror claim about ghostbusting gear intended to clear “bad energy” from the O2 Arena. |
| More than $5,000 | RadarOnline’s May 2010 report said the O2-related ghost hunter and spirit-seeking sweep cost more than this amount. |
| £47,000 | IOL’s November 2010 report gave this figure for electromagnetic-field meters, without identifying a model, supplier, invoice or technical basis for the price. |
| $50,000 | A later CheatSheet retelling popularized this formulation, but does not establish whether it meant a device, equipment package, investigators or total spending. |
The different currencies and descriptions matter. The reports do not provide a documented exchange calculation linking the pound figures to the later dollar figure. Nor is there a receipt or itemized account showing what any reported sum covered. The $50,000 version is best understood as an unverified later summary, not a confirmed price tag.
What an EMF meter measures—and what it cannot establish
An electromagnetic-field meter measures changes in electrical or magnetic fields. Readings can respond to ordinary sources such as building wiring, appliances, speakers, lighting systems, motors, phones and radio transmitters. A reading can tell an investigator that the instrument registered a field; by itself, it does not identify the source as a spirit.

Calling such equipment a “ghost detector” describes a paranormal interpretation, not an established scientific capability. The distinction is important: the available accounts do not identify the exact meter Gaga’s team allegedly used, so it would be too strong to claim what that particular device could or could not detect. No reported EMF reading in this story independently establishes that Ryan existed.
The supplier question is the story’s biggest evidence problem
RadarOnline’s report attributed the equipment request to Dan Webb, said to represent a ghost-busting firm. Londonist later tried to check the supplier and reported unresolved inconsistencies: an identified Las Vegas ghost-hunting operator denied supplying Gaga’s equipment, the alleged company was not clearly identifiable, and the reporter could not establish a verifiable specialist-equipment supplier matching the account. Londonist also reported that the original journalist declined to provide further identifying details. Its examination is therefore an important counterweight to the more sensational retellings.

The power indicator helps you stay informed when battery replacement is needed, making it a convenient, ready-to-use EMF meters option for quick inspections, portable use, and routine checks.
That uncertainty does not prove the story was fabricated. It does mean the central details cannot be independently checked against a clearly identified vendor, product, sales record or technical description.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What is confirmed, reported and still unverified?
- Reported at the time: Gaga’s team arranged a paranormal sweep at the O2, and celebrity outlets later said she feared a ghost named Ryan and held a Belfast séance.
- Plausible but unverified: The touring operation acquired or used EMF equipment. The accounts describe such equipment but do not provide a model or purchase record.
- Weakly supported: The exact $50,000 figure. Contemporary reports conflict on the amount and what it covered; later repetition does not resolve that conflict.
- Not established: That a particular device detected a ghost, or that any equipment identified Ryan.
- Unresolved: The alleged supplier’s identity and the origin of the precise $50,000 formulation.
The available accounts do not establish a direct, on-record confirmation from Gaga of buying a $50,000 detector, paying £47,000 for meters, or having a specific model. No receipt, manufacturer, named product or independently verifiable technical description appears in the cited reporting. The surviving story is a chain of attributed claims and later retellings, not a documented equipment purchase.
