In George R. R. Martin’s Fire & Blood, Rhaenyra and Daemon’s relationship is part of a fictional history told through competing accounts, not a private romance narrated from either character’s point of view. The book records that they secretly married at Dragonstone in 120 AC and had two sons together. Its accounts of their earlier intimacy differ, so they should not be treated as settled fact.
How the book tells their story
Fire & Blood follows Targaryen history through the Dance of the Dragons in the form of an “imaginary history,” as Martin describes it in his official announcement. Rather than offering a single, intimate viewpoint, it presents events through in-world chroniclers. That form matters especially when interpreting the uncertain beginnings of Rhaenyra and Daemon’s relationship.
For readers who want to follow the account in context, Martin’s official book page lists editions and formats of Fire & Blood. The relationship’s chronology and the contrast between chroniclers summarized below are reported in a book-based reference; consult the chosen edition for exact wording and page references.
Were Rhaenyra and Daemon in love in the books?
The book does not provide a definitive, first-person answer about their private feelings. A book-based reference says Rhaenyra became enamored with Daemon when she was young and that he brought her gifts, but the meaning and extent of their early intimacy are disputed in the accounts preserved by the chroniclers.

What the chroniclers say
- Septon Eustace’s account says Daemon seduced Rhaenyra.
- Mushroom’s version is more scandalous.
These are attributed versions, not neutral confirmation of a single account. The safest answer is that the book presents competing testimony about their early relationship rather than an uncontested explanation of how it began.
When did Daemon marry Rhaenyra?
Rhaenyra first married Laenor Velaryon, and Daemon married Laena Velaryon. After Laena, Laenor, and Harwin Strong had died, Rhaenyra and Daemon married secretly at Dragonstone in 120 AC, according to the book-based chronology. Their swift marriage after those deaths caused scandal and angered King Viserys I.

Did Rhaenyra and Daemon have children?
They had two sons together: Aegon the Younger, born in 120 AC, and Viserys, born in 122 AC, as recorded in the chronology summarized here.
Why their marriage matters to the succession
Rhaenyra was the designated heir during the succession crisis. Her marriage to Daemon connected him to her claim and household, placing their family relationship within the political struggle that leads into the Dance of the Dragons. That context helps explain the marriage’s public importance, but it does not establish either character’s private motive for marrying.

How the books differ from House of the Dragon
HBO describes House of the Dragon as a prequel based on Fire & Blood (HBO’s series page). The book filters events through attributed historical accounts, while the series dramatizes them in scenes. Show-specific dialogue, characterization, and staging are adaptation material; they should not be substituted for book events without checking the relevant passage. The book’s uncertainty about the early relationship is therefore not the same as a television scene that presents one interpretation directly.
