In the Season 3 finale of Resident Alien, “Homecoming,” Harry is stranded on the Moon, a murderous Mantid is impersonating him in Patience, and several characters’ understanding of aliens changes at once. Creator and showrunner Chris Sheridan saw those loose ends not as accidental gaps but as story engines—especially for a town whose residents now know very different versions of the truth.
What “Homecoming” left unresolved
In a post-finale interview published by SYFY WIRE on April 3, 2024, the day the finale aired, Sheridan discussed a closing run of cliffhangers and the possibilities they opened. The events shown on screen and Sheridan’s thoughts about where they might lead are distinct: his comments described narrative potential, not confirmation that every outcome was already decided.
Harry, Bridget, and the Mantid
The finale reveals that Harry and baby Bridget are imprisoned on the Moon by the Greys, while the escaped Mantid is in Patience, posing as Harry. Sheridan called the Mantid’s ability to become anyone a promising source of mayhem. He also described a concrete consequence for the town: a “murderous, alien cannibal loose in Patience, Colorado, is exciting,” with Sheriff Mike and Deputy Liv left to deal with the murders.
Mike sees a Grey
Mike’s encounter with a Grey puts his beliefs under pressure. Sheridan joked that Mike believes Bigfoot lives in Seattle but not aliens. He expected the sighting to unsettle Mike’s worldview, while leaving room for him to doubt what he saw.

McCallister enters a portal
McCallister’s passage through a portal is another deliberate unknown. Sheridan said the writers had a specific idea of where she was going but did not disclose it. He described her as frustrated, searching for answers, and somewhat lost—circumstances that could lead her to make poor decisions.
D’Arcy’s choice
D’Arcy’s final moment with the Grey infant mattered to Sheridan as a step toward finding self-worth within herself. He framed it as progress, not a completed transformation; the moment does not mean her personal struggles are suddenly resolved.

Patience now has several versions of the truth
The finale’s cliffhangers are not only about where characters go next. They also divide the people who remain in town by what they know. Sheridan described three circles of knowledge: Asta, D’Arcy, and Harry know Harry’s secret; Mike and Liv now believe aliens exist; and Ben and Kate also believe.
That distinction creates a more complicated tension than a simple split between believers and skeptics. Some characters know aliens are real without knowing that Harry is one. Sheridan pointed to the potential friction between people who know about the Greys and those who know Harry’s identity. The finale therefore changes the social map of Patience as well as its immediate dangers.

Sheridan’s Season 3 balancing act
In an interview published before the finale, Sheridan described wanting to widen the show’s alien mythology without losing its human scale. “I want to expand the alien universe a little bit and ground it as much as possible,” he said. The aim was to let the story become more cosmic while keeping its conflicts legible through relationships and ordinary human concerns.
He also described the show’s human message as learning to love and support one another despite differences: “The message that I’d like to get out there is that we’re best as humans when we learn to love each other and support each other no matter how different we are.” Sheridan connected the alien’s arrival to an immigrant story: someone who does not fit in enters a new culture or town and has to navigate that experience. That is his framing of the show’s theme, rather than the only possible interpretation of it.

These were Season 3 cliffhangers, not the series ending
“Homecoming” closed the third season with unresolved threads intended to lead onward. That distinction matters in retrospect: USA Insider reported in August 2025 that Resident Alien concluded after its fourth season. In that later interview, Sheridan described the intended series arc as taking Harry from an alien who arrived to commit atrocities to someone who comes to understand humanity and is nearly human himself. Read in that broader context, the Season 3 finale’s open questions were a bridge to the remaining story, not the show’s final verdict on Harry or Patience.
