A newly described fossil sawshark from northern Chile has a name inspired by Pochita, the chainsaw-powered devil-dog from Chainsaw Man. The species, Pochitaserra patriciacanalae, was identified from Upper Miocene fossil material. Its name also honors Chilean paleontologist Patricia Canales, who was part of the describing team.
What prehistoric shark was named after Pochita?
Pochitaserra patriciacanalae is a newly proposed sawshark genus and species described from fossil chondrichthyan microremains in the Bahía Inglesa Formation of northern Chile. The material dates to the Upper Miocene. The 2025 study reports 19 chondrichthyan taxa from the locality and says the team examined more than 300 kilograms of sediment; those figures describe the research sample, not the shark’s size.
Sawsharks are named for their elongated, toothed snouts, or rostra. The genus name Pochitaserra combines a reference to Pochita with the saw-like snout shared by the character and sawsharks. The species epithet patriciacanalae honors Patricia Canales. The naming explanation comes from a secondary taxonomic reference; the accessible abstract of the scientific paper confirms the new genus and species but does not give the etymology.
Why did researchers choose a Chainsaw Man name?
The name makes a direct connection between a fictional character’s chainsaw form and the distinctive saw-like rostrum of a sawshark. Sony’s official synopsis describes Pochita as Denji’s chainsaw-powered devil-dog and says the film is based on Tatsuki Fujimoto’s story serialized in Shueisha’s Shonen Jump+. The tribute is therefore a play on the animal’s anatomy, not a claim that the fossil is related to the fictional character.

What does “record-breaking” refer to?
The franchise’s official anime site reported that the Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc reached 6.55 million admissions and ¥10 billion in box-office revenue over 103 days, from September 19 through December 30, 2025. That is a substantial performance milestone. The official post does not identify a specific all-time record or comparison category, so the figures alone do not establish that the film broke a defined record.
