Buku Abi, also known as Joann Kelly, alleges that her father, R. Kelly, sexually abused her when she was a child. She described the allegation in the two-part documentary R. Kelly’s Karma: A Daughter’s Journey. Kelly’s attorney denied it. The allegation is distinct from the criminal convictions reported in Kelly’s other cases; the cited coverage does not show that Abi’s account was adjudicated in those proceedings.
What Buku Abi said in the documentary
Abi said the incident happened when she was about 8 or 9. The Los Angeles Times reported that she described waking to her father touching her and said she pretended to be asleep. In the documentary, she said: “For a long time I did not even want to believe that it happened. I was too scared to tell anybody. I was too scared to tell my mom.”

When she said she told her mother
Abi said she told her mother in 2009, when she was 10, according to the Los Angeles Times and Us Weekly. These are details of Abi’s account as reported, not findings established by a court.
Kelly’s attorney denied the allegation
Jennifer Bonjean, Kelly’s attorney, told People, as quoted by the Los Angeles Times: “Mr. Kelly vehemently denies these allegations.” Bonjean also said that Kelly’s ex-wife had made the same allegation earlier and that the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services investigated and found it unfounded.

The Los Angeles Times and The Washington Post describe a court filing that attributed the unfounded disposition to the delay between the events and the report; the filing said the caseworker believed the events occurred. An agency disposition described as unfounded is not a criminal-court finding, and the reported filing does not establish Abi’s allegation as true or false.
How the allegation relates to Kelly’s convictions
Kelly’s criminal cases are separate from Abi’s account. The Associated Press reported that the U.S. Supreme Court declined to hear his appeal from Chicago convictions. In 2022, he was convicted there of three counts of producing child sexual abuse images and three counts of enticing minors for sex. AP also reported that he had a separate 30-year sentence for New York racketeering and sex-trafficking convictions, which he had appealed at the time of that report. The cited coverage does not show that Abi’s specific allegation was adjudicated in either case.

Where to watch the documentary
The Los Angeles Times reported on October 14, 2024, that R. Kelly’s Karma: A Daughter’s Journey was streaming on TVEI. That report establishes availability at that time, not whether the documentary is currently accessible there.
