Some wrestling friendships played out in front of cameras; others were shaped on the independent circuit, in rental cars, and on long drives between shows. The stories below come from wrestlers’ own accounts and show how friendship can sit behind a rivalry, develop before a television pairing, or last beyond one promotion. “Never saw on TV” is an editorial hook, not a claim that every bond was hidden from viewers.
Friendships behind rivalries and tag teams
Sami Zayn and Kevin Owens: a rivalry built on years of history
Sami Zayn and Kevin Owens met on Quebec’s independent wrestling scene in 2002. In a 2015 WWE interview, both recalled a friendship formed through repeated bookings and travel. Zayn said they clicked quickly and were “pretty much attached at the hip, career-wise”; Owens remembered becoming close on long drives. Their history later gave their WWE rivalries an added layer, even as they also worked together as allies.
Owens put the relationship this way: “I’ve often said that we were more brothers than friends. I still feel this way, regardless of what’s going on.” That is Owens’s description in WWE’s 2015 account, not a claim about their current relationship. WWE: Zayn and Owens on their long and bitter history
Johnny Gargano and Tommaso Ciampa: the friendship behind #DIY
Before their WWE tag-team run as #DIY, Johnny Gargano and Tommaso Ciampa had crossed paths on the independent circuit. A shared WWE tryout in 2015 brought them closer: they shared a room and a rental car. Gargano recalled, “We were friends before that, but that whole experience definitely brought us closer together.” WWE described them as roommates and best friends when it profiled the NXT Tag Team Champions in 2016.

Their later on-screen split made their real friendship useful context for fans, but the interview establishes what the two said at that time; it does not verify the state of their relationship today. WWE: NXT Tag Champions #DIY open up about their ‘dream come true’
Dax Harwood and Cash Wheeler: a shared vision that became family closeness
Dax Harwood and Cash Wheeler have described a bond built around common wrestling ideals, including admiration for Bret Hart, and strengthened by time traveling and working together. In a 2022 Bleacher Report interview, Harwood said their friendship “morphed into a kinship.” He also recalled how close their families had become: “And my daughter even calls him uncle Dan.” Wheeler discussed their shared vision for tag-team wrestling in the same interview, but that professional alignment is not, by itself, proof of private closeness; the two men’s accounts are what establish the friendship.

Damian Priest and Rhea Ripley: friends before the “Terror Twins”
Damian Priest has said he and Rhea Ripley became friends at a holiday party at WWE’s NXT Performance Center, before their later presentation together on television. In an interview transcribed by Wrestling Inc. in June 2025, Priest described how she felt comfortable around him and said the friendship carried over to the main roster. He recalled that “she just thought I was hysterical and then just gravitated towards me because she’d always feel comfortable around me and we just became best friends immediately and then that just transferred over to the main roster.” That is Priest’s account of how the bond began, not evidence that viewers had no way to see it.

MVP, Bobby Lashley, and Shelton Benjamin described a bond formed over years of working together, including a period when they competed against one another. In a conversation on “Close Up with Renee Paquette,” transcribed by Wrestling Inc. in November 2024, MVP recalled the group laughing together and later driving with Lashley. Benjamin described their friendship as nearly two decades long and said, “We’re actually brothers.” The same conversation gives a rare view of a three-person bond rather than a familiar pair.
