To keep a Raspberry Pi YouTube stream running through a power cut, back up the whole playback chain—not just the Pi. The Pi, its correct power supply, the modem/router or access point, and any display needed for viewing must all remain powered. A UPS HAT can suit a compact Pi-only setup; a conventional 230 V UPS can feed the Pi’s normal adapter and other equipment. Neither option has a dependable runtime figure until you know the actual combined load and check the UPS maker’s runtime data.
Decide first whether you need uninterrupted playback or only protection for the Pi’s storage. A graceful shutdown can protect files during a long outage, but it deliberately ends the stream.
What has to stay powered for the stream to continue?
YouTube playback depends on more than the Raspberry Pi. If the router, modem, Wi-Fi access point, or display loses power, the Pi may stay on while the stream becomes unavailable or cannot be watched. List every device that must remain operational and include their combined load when sizing an AC UPS.
- Raspberry Pi: Use a supply suitable for the exact model, and account for attached USB devices and HATs.
- Internet equipment: Back up the modem, router, or access point if it is not already on a battery-backed supply.
- Display: Include it if the screen itself must remain on during the cut. A display is not needed for playback if the Pi is operating headlessly.
A shutdown-focused setup solves a different problem: it can stop processes cleanly and reduce storage risk, but does not maintain playback.

Check the Pi’s power requirement first
Raspberry Pi recommends an official power supply suitable for the model being powered. Its current getting-started table specifies these supply baselines; the required current can also depend on peripherals, and voltage losses in the cable matter because the requirement is measured at the plug. See Raspberry Pi’s getting-started documentation.
| Raspberry Pi model | Supply baseline in current Raspberry Pi documentation |
|---|---|
| Pi 5 and Pi 500 | 5 V at 5 A. With a 3 A supply, Pi 5 peripheral power is restricted to 600 mA. |
| Pi 4 Model B and Pi 400 | 5 V at 3 A. |
| Pi 3, Pi 2 Model B, Pi 1, and Pi Zero entries | 5 V at 2.5 A. |
These figures describe the recommended supply baseline, not the measured draw of your individual streaming setup. Do not assume that a UPS HAT or DC output is suitable just because its input adapter is rated for a particular current. Verify the output voltage and current under your actual load.

Choose between a UPS HAT and a conventional UPS
| Option | Best fit | Check before buying | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pi UPS HAT / direct-DC backup | A compact installation where the Pi is the main device to keep alive. | Exact Pi model and revision; output voltage and current under load; battery compatibility and charging; pass-through behavior; shutdown signaling; measured-load runtime. | It may not power the router, modem, or display. Compatibility and capacity depend on the specific HAT. |
| Conventional 230 V UPS | A setup that needs the Pi’s usual AC adapter and possibly networking gear or a display powered together. | India-compatible input and plug/outlet fit; watt and VA limits; output behavior; battery replacement; runtime at the complete load. | It is larger than a HAT. VA alone does not establish suitability or runtime. |
| UPS with graceful shutdown | Long cuts where protecting storage matters more than keeping playback live. | Supported status signal and software; model-specific wiring; shutdown and restart behavior when mains returns. | The shutdown ends the stream rather than maintaining it. |
Example: a direct-DC HAT
SupTronics lists the X1209 as compatible with Pi 5, Pi 4B, Pi 3B+, and Pi 3B. The maker specifies a rechargeable 4.2 V lithium-ion battery and either a 5 V/5 A USB-C or 6–18 V/3 A DC-jack adapter input. Those input specifications do not, by themselves, establish that its output will suit every Pi build or how long a complete setup will run. Check the X1209 manufacturer page for current product details, then verify output suitability, battery configuration, board revision, and runtime for your load.
Example: an India-market AC UPS
Eaton’s India product page lists the 5P650I as a 230 V line-interactive model rated at 650 VA/420 W with C13 outputs. This is an example of a product specification, not a recommendation that it will fit a particular Pi, router, or display. Confirm outlet and plug compatibility, keep the total load within both ratings, and consult the maker’s runtime data for that load. See Eaton’s 5P650I India product page.

Size an AC UPS by watts, VA, and runtime
- Identify the devices that must remain on. Include the Pi’s supply, modem/router or access point, and any display that must stay lit.
- Find the rated load for each device. Use device labels or manufacturer specifications; do not substitute the Pi’s recommended supply capacity for its actual measured draw.
- Add the watts and check the VA limit too. Neither UPS rating may be exceeded. APC gives general guidance to choose UPS output watt capacity 20–25% above the connected load; this is capacity-sizing advice, not a backup-time guarantee. See APC’s UPS Buying Guide.
- Check runtime at your combined load. Use the UPS maker’s runtime graph or calculator where available, and account for battery condition. Do not infer streaming hours from a VA rating or battery capacity alone.
The cited product specifications do not establish a runtime for your complete stream setup. The Pi model, peripherals, network equipment, display, measured draw, battery state, and desired outage duration all affect the answer.
Prevent undervoltage as well as abrupt shutdown
A power cut is not the only power problem: a weak adapter, overloaded USB connection, or poor cable can cause low voltage even while mains power is present. Raspberry Pi documentation says models since Pi B+ other than Zero detect low voltage below 4.63 V (±5%), and warns that low-quality power supplies can corrupt storage or cause unpredictable behavior. See Raspberry Pi’s power-supply guidance.

- Use a model-appropriate supply and a suitable cable.
- Check whether attached USB devices or HATs are increasing the load.
- If low-voltage warnings appear, investigate the supply, cable, and connected load instead of treating a larger battery as the fix.
Decide whether to keep streaming or shut down safely
For brief interruptions, uninterrupted viewing is the goal: choose a backup that can supply the Pi and every necessary network component for the required duration. For a longer outage, orderly shutdown may be preferable to letting the Pi lose power abruptly, even though playback stops.
Shutdown signaling is hardware-specific. UPSafePI describes GPIO overlays for controlled shutdown when its UPS detects mains loss. That implementation applies to its documented hardware; do not copy its wiring or software setup to another UPS board without checking that board’s own instructions. See UPSafePI’s Raspberry-based PLC guide.

Troubleshoot a stream that still stops
- The Pi stays on but YouTube stops: Check whether the modem, router, or access point also lost power. Add the necessary networking equipment to the backup plan.
- The Pi reboots or shows low-voltage symptoms: Check the model-appropriate supply, cable, connected USB load, and UPS output under load. Raspberry Pi’s documented low-voltage threshold is below 4.63 V (±5%) for applicable models.
- A HAT powers up but the Pi is unstable: Confirm its output voltage and available current under the actual load. Adapter input ratings alone do not prove the HAT’s output is suitable.
- The UPS shuts down before the desired interval: Recheck the combined load and the manufacturer’s runtime information at that load; do not estimate runtime from the VA figure.
- The UPS stops playback to protect storage: Check whether its status signal or shutdown software is configured to stop the Pi on mains loss. That is expected behavior for a graceful-shutdown setup.
- The display goes dark while the Pi keeps running: Back up the display too if it must remain available to viewers in the room.
