There is no universal winner in the Raspberry Pi vs VPS cost for looping prerecorded videos on YouTube. A Pi has an upfront hardware cost and recurring electricity cost; a VPS has a recurring rental fee and may charge for stream traffic above its included allowance. The cheapest workable setup depends on whether your video can be sent without real-time encoding, your local power and internet costs, the VPS transfer terms, and how much time you can spend monitoring and recovering the stream.
What you are paying for
Compare the total cost over the same period—12 months is a useful example—not a Pi’s purchase price against a VPS’s advertised monthly starting price. Neither figure alone includes all the costs or establishes that a particular setup will handle your video.
| Cost or responsibility | Raspberry Pi at home | VPS in a data center |
|---|---|---|
| Initial cost | Board, suitable power supply, boot storage, and any cooling, enclosure, cables, or replacement allowance. Use local prices. | Usually no separate computer purchase; rental is recurring. Storage, IPv4, or other plan-specific charges may apply. |
| Recurring power | Measure wall power during the intended workload, then calculate: average watts ÷ 1,000 × operating hours × local electricity rate. | Included in the rental price, subject to the provider’s plan and terms. |
| Internet and stream traffic | Uses the home connection’s upload capacity. Add an internet-plan upgrade only if the stream causes one. | Check included outbound transfer and the provider’s overage billing against the stream’s expected traffic. |
| Reliability work | Depends on home power, router, internet, the Pi, and your recovery process. | Removes the home device and connection from the sending path, but still needs a configured process, protected stream key, monitoring, and recovery plan. |
| Operator time | You configure and maintain the device and respond to failures. | You configure and maintain the server and respond to failures. |
The Raspberry Pi power-supply rating is not its actual consumption. Raspberry Pi recommends a 27 W USB-C supply for Pi 5, but that does not mean the board continuously draws 27 W. Measure the complete setup at the wall under the intended streaming workload. Raspberry Pi also recommends a 15 W USB-C supply for Pi 4 Model B and Pi 400. See Raspberry Pi’s getting-started documentation.
How much VPS transfer does a continuous stream use?
Estimate outbound data from the configured bitrate: bitrate in bits per second × streaming seconds ÷ 8. At YouTube’s recommended H.264 bitrate of 5 Mbps for 1080p30, a continuous stream sends about 54 GB per 24-hour day, or about 1.62 TB over 30 days in decimal units, before protocol overhead. This is a calculation from the bitrate, not a published YouTube traffic statistic.

DigitalOcean’s listed Basic Droplet examples include 500 GiB of transfer with its 512 MiB RAM, 1 vCPU, 10 GiB SSD plan, and 1,000 GiB with its 1 GiB RAM, 1 vCPU, 25 GiB SSD plan. Its bandwidth documentation says additional outbound transfer is billed at $0.01/GiB; inbound transfer is free and the allowance is pooled at team level. Compare your estimate with the provider’s accounting units, plan allowance, and actual billable traffic. A 5 Mbps stream running throughout a 30-day month exceeds the cited 500 GiB allowance if all of that outbound traffic is charged against it.

DigitalOcean’s pricing page was accessed 3 October 2026; its bandwidth documentation was last verified 14 September 2026. Prices and plan details can change. The entry price is a baseline, not evidence that the smallest plan can encode your file, sustain your workflow, or meet every provider term. Check the current plan specifications and usage policy before ordering.
When does the video need real-time encoding?
The key technical question is whether the prerecorded file can be sent in a format YouTube accepts without changing it while streaming. If its video and audio codecs, resolution, frame rate, and container are compatible with the chosen ingest settings, the sender may only need to relay or package the existing media. If the workflow must transcode or encode in real time, compute capacity becomes important on either a Pi or VPS.

There is no workload-specific benchmark here for a particular Pi model or VPS plan. Do not choose a server based on its low price alone if encoding is required: test the actual file and settings on the exact configuration you intend to use. A Pi configuration also needs a sustained-workload test; source compatibility, heat, storage wear, and automation depend on the setup.
Configure YouTube Live for the stream
YouTube’s encoder guidance supports RTMP/RTMPS ingest and recommends RTMPS, which encrypts the stream to Google’s servers. YouTube Help states: “We recommend streaming to YouTube Live with RTMPS, a secure extension to the popular RTMP video protocol.” Keep the stream key private; anyone with access to it may be able to broadcast to your channel.

| Target format | YouTube’s H.264 guidance | Other relevant setting |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p30 | 5 Mbps recommended; listed range 5–14 Mbps | Use constant bitrate (CBR) and a 2-second keyframe interval; do not exceed 4 seconds. |
| 720p30 | 3 Mbps recommended; listed range 3–8 Mbps | Use CBR and a 2-second keyframe interval; do not exceed 4 seconds. |
These are YouTube’s published H.264 ingest recommendations; match the setting to your resolution, frame rate, and codec rather than applying one bitrate to every source. Leave upload headroom instead of treating the bottom of a range as a comfortable target. YouTube’s settings page also supports H.265/HEVC and AV1 and lists frame rates up to 60 fps. Consult its current live encoder settings for the format you plan to send.
- Enable live streaming in YouTube. First-time enablement can take up to 24 hours, according to YouTube’s live-streaming guide.
- Create or schedule a live stream in YouTube Studio. Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for that broadcast into your encoder or sending process. Do not publish the key or place it in a public script or repository.
- Set the encoder or relay. Choose RTMPS where supported, set the codec and output format to match the file and YouTube’s guidance, and use the appropriate bitrate and keyframe interval.
- Test before relying on it. Start a private or otherwise appropriate test broadcast, check YouTube’s stream health, and confirm both picture and audio. YouTube recommends testing before going live and monitoring health during the stream.
- Plan for interruption. Decide how you will detect a stopped process or dropped ingest and restart it. YouTube’s guide says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; do not assume that a long continuous broadcast will be archived as one complete video.

Raspberry Pi total
Add the locally priced board and required accessories, then estimate electricity from a wall measurement taken during the actual workload. For example, if the meter reports an average of W watts, the 12-month energy use is W Ă· 1,000 Ă— 24 Ă— 365 kilowatt-hours. Multiply that by your electricity tariff. Include extra home internet charges only if this stream triggers an upgrade or other incremental fee. The current local price of a complete Pi streaming setup and its workload-specific energy consumption are not established by the power-supply specification.

Multiply the chosen plan’s recurring price by the comparison period, then add applicable storage, IPv4, or other plan charges and any billable transfer above the allowance. Check whether provider transfer is pooled, how it rounds usage, and whether the full outbound video stream counts against it. Also account for the administration time required to configure, secure, monitor, and recover the server.
Use the same assumptions
- Choose the same period for both options and include the Pi’s initial purchase in that period.
- Use the bitrate you will actually stream, not a lower figure chosen only to make transfer appear cheaper.
- Separate a relay workload from a transcoding workload; they can have different compute requirements.
- Value reliability and operator attention honestly. They matter, but there is no universal dollar figure for them.
Raspberry Pi product prices are volatile and vary by region. In a 2 February 2026 announcement, Raspberry Pi described memory-price increases affecting some Pi 4 and Pi 5 configurations; its announced context does not establish the current local cost of a full streaming setup. See Raspberry Pi’s announcement page.
Which option fits your situation?
Choose a Raspberry Pi when
- You already own suitable hardware or can price a complete setup locally.
- Your home has dependable power and upload service for a continuous stream.
- The video can be sent without resource-intensive real-time encoding, or you have tested the required encoding on your exact Pi.
- You are comfortable managing the device and responding to failures.
Choose a VPS when
- You want the sending computer and connection outside your home.
- Your selected plan’s transfer allowance and overage terms work for the actual bitrate and schedule.
- You can configure and maintain the server, protect the stream key, and arrange monitoring and recovery.
- You have verified that its compute resources are adequate if encoding is necessary.
Neither is automatically cheapest or more reliable. A Pi’s running cost depends on measured draw and local tariffs; a VPS’s depends on its plan, traffic accounting, and any extras. Both need a tested sending workflow and a recovery plan.
