For most OBS recordings, choose MKV as the recording format, then remux the finished file to MP4 if your editor or upload workflow needs it. MKV is more resilient if OBS or your computer stops unexpectedly. For quality, start with OBS’s High Quality preset; move to Indistinguishable if you can spare more storage and your system can handle the extra workload.
Choose a safe format before choosing a codec
A container packages video and audio streams into a file; a codec encodes those streams. They are separate choices, and the best combination depends on both interruption safety and what your editing software can open. OBS’s official format guidance, published in 2023, recommends MKV for most use cases and describes it as the default container. Check your installed OBS version and editor’s current compatibility before settling on a particular combination.
| Format | Interruption resilience | Compatibility and practical use |
|---|---|---|
| MKV | OBS says an interrupted recording can remain playable and recoverable rather than corrupting the whole file. | Flexible across OBS-supported audio and video encoders. Some editors need the file remuxed first. |
| Regular MP4 or MOV | Requires file finalization; if writing is interrupted, the file may not be recoverable. | MP4 is widely supported by editing software. MOV is often favored in Mac workflows, but codec compatibility still matters. |
| Hybrid or fragmented MP4/MOV | OBS describes hybrid formats as combining fragmentation resilience with wider compatibility; fragmented formats write self-contained chunks that do not require finalization. | Consider only if your installed OBS version offers the format and your editor or destination accepts it. |
OBS’s Standard Recording Output Guide puts the reason plainly: “MKV is recommended in case of unforeseen issues arising, since MKV will not corrupt the whole file if there is no graceful stoppage of recording.” The practical default is therefore MKV while recording, with remuxing for workflows that require a different container.
Remux MKV to MP4 when needed
Remuxing changes the container without re-encoding the audio and video streams. It is not the same as exporting or transcoding, so it does not inherently improve or reduce the recorded image quality. The selected codecs must still be supported by the destination container and the editing software.

Pick a video codec your hardware and editor can use
OBS’s Audio/Video Formats Guide, published in 2023, gives this general ordering for local-recording quality when suitable hardware encoders are available: AV1, then HEVC, then H.264. This is guidance, not a guarantee that your computer has each encoder or that your editing software supports each codec. Encoder availability and editor support can change, so check your actual system and current software versions.
| Codec | What to weigh | Good fit when |
|---|---|---|
| AV1 | OBS describes improved quality per file size over HEVC, but weaker editing support. Software encoding with SVT-AV1 or libaom-av1 is demanding for real-time compression. | Your hardware encoder and editor both support it, and file efficiency matters more than broad compatibility. OBS’s 2023 guide lists hardware encoders on recent AMD RX 7000, NVIDIA RTX 40, and Intel Arc products; confirm support for your exact device. |
| HEVC | OBS says it can provide better quality at the same bitrate or file size than H.264. Licensing is more restrictive and streaming adoption is weaker than H.264. | Your encoder and destination editor support it and you want more compression efficiency than H.264. |
| H.264 | OBS identifies it as the default and broadly playable across nearly every device or software, though it may require more data than HEVC or AV1 for comparable quality. | Predictable playback and editing compatibility matter more than maximizing compression efficiency. |
Do not choose a codec by name alone: the container, encoder implementation, editor, and playback destination all have to work together. If you prioritize dependable handoff to an editor over smaller files, H.264 is often the more compatible choice according to OBS’s guide.

Choose an OBS quality preset
In OBS’s recording output controls, the preset is a useful starting point for balancing image quality, file size, and system load. The names below are from OBS’s Recording Encoder Presets Guide, dated 2023; confirm what your installed version exposes.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
| Preset | OBS’s description | When to choose it |
|---|---|---|
| Same as stream | Uses the streaming encoder settings and gives the same quality as the stream. Recordings cannot be paused with this setting. | When you specifically want the local recording to match the stream’s encoded output. |
| High Quality | High-quality video with a medium file size. | A sensible first choice for general recording. |
| Indistinguishable | Higher quality with larger files; depending on encoder choice, it may affect performance on older or weaker hardware. | When quality matters more than storage economy and your system has enough headroom. |
| Lossless | Lossless video with tremendously large files; this preset uses the CPU encoder. | Only for workflows that specifically require lossless capture and have substantial storage and CPU capacity. |
OBS’s 2023 guide estimates around 7 GB of data per minute for its Lossless preset. That figure applies to that preset, not to ordinary OBS recordings generally. A portable external drive may be useful if your capture volume exceeds your available storage, but storage hardware does not itself improve image quality.
Advanced Output: encoder-specific starting values
Use the Simple output mode unless you need finer control. OBS’s Advanced Recording Settings Guide, dated 2023-11-30, describes the values below as baselines intended to effectively match Simple-mode presets—not universal optimal settings. Names and available controls depend on encoder and OBS version. In OBS, open Settings → Output, select Advanced for Output Mode, then review the Recording tab and the controls shown for the selected encoder.

| Quick Sync | Rate Control: ICQ; ICQ Quality: 16–23; Target Usage: TU4; Profile: High; Keyframe Interval: 2; Latency: normal; B-Frames: 3. |
For the CQ, CRF, and ICQ ranges above, OBS says lower quality-number values produce higher quality and larger files. Start within the baseline range, record a short sample at your intended resolution and frame rate, then inspect detail, motion, file size, and system load before recording a long session. The guide’s baselines do not guarantee identical results across hardware or workloads.
Set up audio tracks for editing, not sharper video
Advanced output lets you choose which audio tracks to record. Separate tracks can preserve independent sources for editing—for example, keeping a microphone apart from desktop audio—while a single mixed track is simpler to handle. Decide based on your microphone, applications, and editor; there is no universal track layout.
OBS lists AAC as a widely supported default audio codec. Depending on the selected container and video codec, other options may include ALAC, FLAC, Opus, or PCM. OBS describes Opus as higher quality than AAC but less compatible with editing software, and PCM as uncompressed audio with 32-bit floating-point recording support. Prefer broadly supported audio unless your post-production workflow specifically needs another format; lossless audio is not automatically a better practical choice.

Check the recording before relying on it
- Container: MKV is the safer general-purpose recording choice; confirm whether your editor accepts it or plan to remux.
- Codec: Confirm that OBS can encode it on your system and that your editor or destination supports it.
- Quality and capacity: Use High Quality as a starting point, and make sure storage can accommodate the chosen preset and recording duration.
- Performance: Make a short sample with the same resolution, frame rate, sources, and encoder you plan to use. Watch for stutter or other signs your system cannot sustain the workload.
- Audio: Check that the intended tracks contain the right sources and that playback works in the target editor.
- Recovery: Keep the original MKV until the remuxed file has opened and played correctly.
Troubleshooting common recording problems
The file will not open after OBS or the computer stopped unexpectedly
If you recorded regular MP4 or MOV, an interrupted write may have prevented finalization. OBS recommends MKV for resilience; for future recordings, use MKV and remux after completion if MP4 is required. Hybrid or fragmented formats may be an option if your OBS version and workflow support them.
Your editor rejects the MKV file
The editor may not support the container, the codecs inside it, or that combination. Use File → Remux Recordings to create an MP4 without re-encoding, then check the result. If the editor still rejects the file, verify its support for the actual video and audio codecs; changing containers alone cannot make an unsupported codec compatible.
The file is much larger than expected
Indistinguishable and especially Lossless can create larger files than High Quality. OBS’s estimate of around 7 GB per minute applies specifically to its Lossless preset. Switch to High Quality or a suitable encoder setting if the workflow does not require lossless capture, and check free storage before starting a long session.

The recording stutters or the computer struggles
OBS warns that Indistinguishable can affect performance on older or weaker systems depending on encoder choice. Try High Quality, use a hardware encoder if one is available and supported, or reduce workload and test again. A software AV1 encoder can be demanding for real-time compression. The best adjustment depends on the actual encoder and system.
The recording plays, but the image or audio is missing in the editor
Check codec and container support in the editor, then confirm that the intended audio track was selected in OBS. Separate-track settings are an editing control, not an image-quality setting. Test with a short recording before changing a full project’s workflow.
When OBS recording settings are—and are not—the right tool
These settings apply to local recordings made by OBS. A continuous YouTube live stream is a different task: OBS can stream from a computer, while StreamNeo is a cloud service that loops videos you upload to keep a YouTube channel live. It does not record from a camera, and it does not replace choosing a safe format for local OBS captures. If your goal is to keep an uploaded video or playlist live on YouTube without leaving a computer running, see StreamNeo.
Or let it run in the cloud
- Upload a recording or build a playlist.
- Add your YouTube stream key once.
- Go live; StreamNeo loops the uploaded content from the cloud.
Nothing has to stay on at home. Each slot streams the uploaded video as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. Visit StreamNeo to start the free first day.
