Raspberry Pi 4 vs. Pi 5 for an FFmpeg YouTube Loop Stream

Pi 4 and Pi 5 can both host an FFmpeg YouTube loop, but encoding needs, source-file compatibility, and sustained testing should guide your choice.

Both a Raspberry Pi 4 and Raspberry Pi 5 can be used to send a looping video to YouTube Live with FFmpeg, but the decisive difference is how they encode video. Raspberry Pi lists H.264 hardware encoding on Pi 4 up to 1080p30; Pi 5 uses software video encoders. If your file’s video and audio already suit YouTube’s ingest settings, stream copying may avoid video encoding altogether. If FFmpeg must transcode, the board, settings, cooling, and actual workload matter—neither specification guarantees an uninterrupted 24/7 stream.

Which Raspberry Pi should you choose?

For a workflow that must transcode video to H.264, Pi 4 has the clearest documented advantage: Raspberry Pi specifies H.264 encoding up to 1080p30, and its encoding note includes a hardware-encoder configuration using h264_v4l2m2m. Raspberry Pi documents software video encoders for Pi 5, so CPU load and the chosen software encoder settings are more consequential when encoding.

If the source streams are already compatible and can be copied to the output, the encoding distinction may not decide the choice. Inspect the file and test the precise FFmpeg command on the board you intend to use. Raspberry Pi’s Pi 5 low-latency guidance applies to its camera software, rpicam-vid, not to FFmpeg; it describes latency, coding-efficiency, and maximum-frame-rate tradeoffs rather than a general FFmpeg setting.

Consideration Raspberry Pi 4 Raspberry Pi 5
Documented H.264 path Manufacturer specification: H.264 encoding up to 1080p30; Raspberry Pi’s performance note tests h264_v4l2m2m. Raspberry Pi documents software video encoders; its performance note compares libx264 presets with the Pi 4 hardware-encoding configuration.
What matters in a transcode Check whether the installed FFmpeg build exposes the hardware encoder and whether it handles your chosen output settings. Software encoder, preset, resolution, frame rate, and the board’s sustained CPU load matter.
Connectivity and storage details established here Pi 4 Model B specifications list Gigabit Ethernet, Wi-Fi, a microSD slot, and USB-C 5V input with a minimum 3A rating. A direct, full connectivity comparison is not established by the cited Raspberry Pi sources.
Continuous-stream performance, cooling, cost, and availability No comparative 24/7 YouTube loop-stream result, cooling result, current price, or availability is established. Validate your own workload and check current regional listings.

The Pi 4 specification describes a capability, not a demonstrated success rate for every file or a guarantee of sustained operation. Raspberry Pi’s encoding comparisons also cover bounded configurations, not every FFmpeg and YouTube workload. If you already own a board that passes a test with your exact source and target settings, buying another model may not be necessary.

Check the source before choosing an encoder

A .mp4 filename alone does not establish that the contained streams are suitable for YouTube Live or for your chosen output. Identify the video and audio codecs, resolution, frame rate, and container before configuring the stream.

  1. Inspect the file’s stream information with a media-inspection tool available on your system. Record the video codec, dimensions, frame rate, audio codec, and any other streams you intend to send.
  2. Compare those properties with the YouTube Live settings you plan to use. If both streams can be sent as-is and the container and output path support copying them, FFmpeg stream copy can avoid re-encoding.
  3. If video or audio needs conversion, confirm that your installed FFmpeg build includes the required encoder. Encoder availability and options vary by build; do not assume a hardware encoder is present just because the board specification describes a capability.
  4. Test the actual file and command at the intended output settings. A successful start alone does not establish that encoding, temperature, or network performance will hold over a long run.

Raspberry Pi’s Pi 4 product specification is at Raspberry Pi 4 Model B specifications. Its camera software documentation discusses Pi 5 software encoding and the camera-specific low-latency mode. These describe platform and camera-software capabilities, not a validated FFmpeg recipe for every file.

Set YouTube Live output settings first

Choose the resolution and frame rate you actually want to publish, then use YouTube’s current encoder settings table to select the corresponding bitrate and other ingest settings. Recommendations depend on output mode; there is no single bitrate that is correct for every resolution and frame rate. YouTube lists AAC or MP3 audio for RTMP/RTMPS and recommends RTMPS.

Use the current settings in YouTube’s live encoder settings. Copy the server URL and stream key from YouTube’s live setup rather than using a key from an example. Treat the key as a password: anyone with it may be able to send a stream to your channel. Do not publish it in a script, screenshot, or public repository.

Build the FFmpeg loop command

FFmpeg documents -stream_loop as an input option and -re as a way to read an input at its native rate. Put input options before the input they apply to. A schematic command is:

ffmpeg -stream_loop -1 -re -i "input.mp4" -f flv "rtmps://SERVER/APP/STREAM_KEY"

This is a template, not a ready-to-run command. Replace the input path and the server URL/key with your own values, and replace the bracketed section with the appropriate options. Do not paste a real stream key into a shared example. FFmpeg’s documentation explains its options, while its protocol documentation covers supported output protocols. The exact muxer, options, and encoders depend on the installed build and the streams being sent.

When stream copying may work

Use stream copy only when the existing streams are compatible with the required output and ingest path. Copying avoids video encoding, but it does not make an incompatible codec, audio stream, container, or timing acceptable. If the stream fails YouTube’s preview or ingest checks, revisit compatibility before changing hardware.

When transcoding is needed

Select an encoder available in your FFmpeg build and set output properties to match the YouTube mode you chose. On Pi 4, verify whether h264_v4l2m2m is available and works with the settings you need. On Pi 5, Raspberry Pi’s documented video-encoding route is software-based; choose a suitable libx264 configuration only after checking the installed build and testing its sustained load. Do not apply rpicam-vid’s --low-latency option to FFmpeg—it is not an FFmpeg option.

Validate the setup before relying on it

  1. Use the final source file, output resolution, frame rate, audio, encoder, and bitrate—not a lighter test configuration.
  2. Start the stream and check YouTube’s ingest or preview status for errors, dropped frames, or audio/video problems.
  3. Monitor CPU load, board temperature and throttling, and network behavior during a sustained test. This is a validation procedure, not a published benchmark for either Pi.
  4. Confirm that your power supply and cooling suit the installation. For Pi 4 Model B, Raspberry Pi specifies a USB-C 5V input with a minimum 3A rating; that specification is not a comparative power-use or runtime measurement.
  5. Plan what should happen if FFmpeg exits or YouTube disconnects the stream. A process restart, a reconnect strategy, and a private stream key are operational considerations; the cited board specifications do not provide a product-specific reliability guarantee.

For a fixed setup, Ethernet can be a practical choice where available, but a Gigabit Ethernet specification does not guarantee stable upstream bandwidth. Confirm the connection under the conditions in which the stream will run.

Common problems and what to check

  • YouTube rejects the stream or shows no preview: Recheck the server URL and key in YouTube’s live setup, the selected output mode, and codec/container compatibility. Keep the key private.
  • FFmpeg reports an unknown encoder: The installed build may not include it. Inspect that build’s encoder list and use an available encoder or a compatible stream-copy path.
  • The Pi struggles during a transcode: Reduce the workload only if the resulting output remains suitable for your needs, or test the other board’s documented encoding path. Recheck CPU load and temperature at the final settings rather than relying on a short startup test.
  • Video works but audio does not: Check the input audio codec and YouTube’s RTMP/RTMPS audio guidance; convert audio if required and supported by the installed build.
  • The stream drops after running: Check network interruptions, power, temperature or throttling, and FFmpeg’s exit and reconnect behavior. A board capability is not a recovery guarantee.
  • The loop does not behave as expected: Verify that -stream_loop is positioned as an input option and that -re is applied to the file input. Consult the installed FFmpeg documentation because command behavior and available options can vary by build.

Copyright and YouTube channel rules still apply

Looping a file does not grant permission to use its music, footage, or other protected material. Use content you created, have licensed for the intended use, or otherwise have the right to stream. Review YouTube’s current copyright and live-stream policies, and consider how repetitive or reused material fits the platform’s rules; technical ability to keep a stream running is not approval of the content.

Or let it run in the cloud

If you do not want a Pi, computer, or home connection to stay on, StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud; it does not stream from a camera.

  • Nothing has to stay on at home while the cloud stream runs.
  • Every slot streams uploaded video as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; there are no quality tiers.
  • Automatic recovery is included if YouTube drops the stream.
  • The first day is free with no card, one free day per account.
  • The monthly option is $9.99 per month.
