Barry Allen is the closest established rival, while Bart Allen has the greatest combination of raw potential and limited Flash tenure. Jay Garrick is the original Flash and an extraordinary veteran, but modern stories generally place him below the later peak reached by Wally and Barry.
This is a reasoned mainline-comics ranking, not an official DC-sanctioned order. It distinguishes sustained speed from one-off feats, and raw running speed from Speed Force manipulation, combat reactions, time travel, and dimensional movement.
Wally West is the fastest Flash overall. Barry Allen is the closest established rival, while Bart Allen has extraordinary potential but a shorter record as the Flash. Jay Garrick remains an exceptionally capable veteran, though the modern mythology generally places him below Wally and Barry.
That is the clearest answer—but it needs one important qualification. “Fastest” in Flash stories does not mean a stable miles-per-hour figure. The best comparison considers sustained speed, acceleration, reflexes, endurance, Speed Force control, phasing, time travel, dimensional movement, and the ability to lend or steal speed. It also separates characters who held the Flash mantle from villains and related speedsters.

The ranking at a glance
| Rank | Character | Category | Why they rank here |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Wally West | Flash mantle holder | Best overall combination of speed, Speed Force mastery, endurance, and advanced abilities. |
| 2 | Barry Allen | Flash mantle holder | The defining modern benchmark and Wally’s closest established rival. |
| 3 | Bart Allen | Flash mantle holder | Huge raw potential and unusual perception, but a shorter mature record. |
| 4 | Jay Garrick | Flash mantle holder | The original Flash and a near-light-speed veteran, generally below the modern peak. |
| 5 | Eobard Thawne | Related speedster and villain | A peer-level temporal threat, though not clearly established as faster than Wally. |
| 6 | Godspeed | Related speedster and villain | Can temporarily exceed Barry by draining Speed Force energy from other speedsters. |
| 7 | Savitar | Related speedster and villain | A dangerous specialist whose speed theft can defeat faster opponents. |
| 8 | Max Mercury | Related speedster | An elite Speed Force mentor and expert, but not clearly a top raw-speed contender. |
| 9 | Jesse Quick | Related speedster | A highly trained and capable legacy speedster without the same decisive top-end evidence. |
| 10 | Wallace West | Kid Flash | A powerful developing speedster who has not yet surpassed the established adult Flashes. |
The first four positions are the main ranking of characters who held the principal Flash identity. The remaining six belong to an expanded Flash-family and rival comparison; mixing them into the mantle-holder list without that distinction would make the result misleading.
How to compare Flash speed
Flash continuity makes simple speed rankings unusually difficult. A character can be slower in a straight race but more dangerous in a fight because they can steal speed, manipulate time, phase through matter, or attack from another point in history. Conversely, a character may produce one spectacular feat without demonstrating the same speed consistently across an entire era.
This ranking weighs five broad factors:
- Sustained movement: how consistently the character operates at extreme speed rather than producing one isolated burst.
- Speed Force control: how precisely the character can draw on, shape, share, or manipulate the Speed Force.
- Advanced movement: phasing, time travel, dimensional travel, and movement through unusual spaces.
- Performance against speedsters: whether the character can keep up with, outmaneuver, or defeat other experienced speedsters.
- Consistency across stories: whether the evidence reflects a developed version of the character rather than a temporary power-up or an outlier scene.
Terms such as “faster than light” and “fastest man alive” are story-language claims, not dependable scientific measurements. There is no honest single miles-per-hour answer for the DC Flashes.
1. Wally West is the fastest Flash overall
Wally West has the strongest case for the top position. After beginning as Kid Flash, he developed into the central Flash of the post-Crisis era and eventually surpassed Barry Allen. DC’s own retrospective material has described Wally as the fastest of the DC Universe’s speedsters for a substantial period.
Wally’s advantage is not based on one race. His greatest strength is the depth of his Speed Force mastery. He can lend speed, steal speed, phase with exceptional sophistication, travel through time and dimensions, and keep functioning at extreme velocity for remarkable periods. He is also unusually good at understanding what his powers are doing and applying them creatively under pressure.
That combination matters. A character who can run at an incredible speed is not automatically faster overall than someone who can redistribute momentum, alter the conditions of a race, cross dimensions, and maintain control while doing so. Wally’s later stories present him as continuing to expand his understanding of the Speed Force rather than merely reproducing Barry’s original skill set.
The caveat: Wally does not win every race or every confrontation. Some stories portray Barry as equal to or faster than him, and alternate continuities can change the result. The defensible conclusion is that Wally is the fastest overall mainline Flash—not that he wins every contest in every publication.
2. Barry Allen is the benchmark and a close second
Barry Allen is the Silver Age Flash and the character most often used as the measuring stick for later speedsters. His abilities extend far beyond running: he can become intangible, travel through time and dimensions, control lightning, and interact with the Speed Force at a fundamental level.

Barry also has the strongest claim to being the defining architect of modern Flash mythology. His scientific approach, knowledge of the Speed Force, and long history of high-end feats make him an obvious second-place choice. In individual stories, especially those emphasizing his scientific insight or a major time-travel event, Barry can look like the superior Flash.
Rank #2

He nevertheless ranks just behind Wally in an overall comparison because DC’s own account of Wally’s development explicitly presents the younger hero as eventually surpassing his mentor. Barry is the benchmark; Wally is the successor who, at his peak, moved beyond that benchmark.
Readers interested in the central Barry-versus-Wally debate can start with the Flash War graphic novel, a story built around the conflict between the two Flashes and their competing approaches to a crisis.
3. Bart Allen has extraordinary potential, but less sustained evidence
Bart Allen is best known as Impulse and Kid Flash, but he briefly became the Flash after Wally West’s apparent retirement. His tenure was short-lived: Bart’s run as the Flash lasted thirteen issues before his death and the mantle’s return to Wally.

His future heritage, accelerated perception, and ability to process information while moving give him a distinctive relationship with speed. Bart can think, react, and absorb information at a rate that makes him exceptionally difficult to predict.
The difficulty is proving where he belongs in a ranking of sustained adult performance. Bart spent far less time established as the active Flash than Barry or Wally, and his mature record is not as extensive. He is therefore a credible short-burst contender for the highest tier, but the evidence does not support placing him above Wally or Barry with confidence.
4. Jay Garrick is the original Flash and a formidable veteran
Jay Garrick was the first character to use the Flash identity. He is often underestimated because the modern mythology has added increasingly spectacular abilities to the mantle, but Jay remains extraordinarily fast, experienced, and tactically intelligent. DC describes him as capable of approaching the speed of light through the Speed Force, with superhuman reflexes, agility, and vibration-based abilities.
Jay’s age and experience are assets rather than simple disadvantages. He understands how to use speed efficiently, reads opponents well, and has decades of practical judgment. In a real confrontation, those qualities could allow him to outperform a less disciplined speedster who has a higher theoretical ceiling.

For an overall ranking, however, the modern Flash stories generally place Wally and Barry beyond Jay’s established top end. Jay is fourth among the principal mantle holders—not because he is ordinary, but because the later Flashes expanded the ceiling of what the Speed Force could do.
Who is the fastest Flash villain or related speedster?
The following characters should not be treated as direct equivalents to the four principal Flashes. Their rankings often reflect combat threat, specialized powers, or temporary enhancements as much as ordinary running speed.
5. Eobard Thawne, the Reverse-Flash
Eobard Thawne replicated the accident that gave Barry Allen his powers and became one of Barry’s greatest enemies. His abilities are similar to Barry’s, but his relationship with time makes him a uniquely dangerous opponent. Thawne can attack across history, revisit events, and use temporal manipulation in ways that ordinary speedsters cannot.
Rank #3

That makes him a peer-level threat to Barry even when a pure race is not the issue. Thawne can survive or alter situations by exploiting time itself, so “who runs faster?” does not fully capture the danger he poses.
He does not receive a higher position than Wally here because there is no equally clear basis for calling him a faster runner. Thawne is best described as one of the most dangerous speedsters in the setting, not as a definitively faster-than-Wally speed champion.
6. Godspeed, or August Heart
Godspeed became a major rival during the Rebirth era. His most important speed feat came from extracting Speed Force energy from other speedsters. That temporary increase allowed him to surpass Barry during the early storyline and, because of his powers, split himself into two bodies.
This is impressive but conditional. Godspeed’s boost depends on draining other speedsters, and the process is physically painful. It demonstrates that he can briefly challenge or overwhelm Barry under the right circumstances; it does not establish a stable maximum speed above the Wally-Barry ceiling.
Godspeed therefore ranks as a high-end short-term contender and specialized predator, rather than as the fastest Flash overall.
7. Savitar is a speed-stealing specialist
Savitar is one of the most specialized Speed Force antagonists. His signature ability is speed theft: he can remove speed from other speedsters, potentially leaving them helpless while increasing his own advantage. His comic-book conflicts involve Wally, Bart, Jay, Jesse Quick, Max Mercury, and other members of the speedster community.
Speed theft changes the terms of a confrontation. Savitar may defeat a faster runner if he can use his ability successfully, but that does not automatically prove that his own maximum running speed is higher. He belongs high on a threat list because of his specialization, not above Wally simply because he can take speed away.
8. Max Mercury is an elite Speed Force expert
Max Mercury is more useful as a veteran mentor and Speed Force authority than as a straightforward speed champion. He has deep historical knowledge, experience with time displacement, and an important place in stories involving Barry, Wally, and Bart.
Those qualities make Max invaluable to the Flash Family, but the available evidence does not support putting him above Wally or Barry in raw speed. His ranking reflects expertise, survival, and understanding rather than a claim that he can win a maximum-speed race against the leading Flashes.

9. Jesse Quick is a highly capable legacy speedster
Jesse Quick is the daughter of Johnny Quick and Liberty Belle and a mature, trained member of the Flash Family. Her experience and discipline can allow her to outperform younger or less controlled speedsters, and she belongs comfortably in the upper-middle tier of DC speedsters.
Her exact placement is less certain than the positions of Wally, Barry, or Jay. The available official material supports including her in the comparison, but not placing her above the principal Flashes on the basis of a clearly documented top-speed record.
10. Wallace West is a powerful developing Kid Flash
Wallace West is a separate character from the original Wally West. He is the latest Kid Flash in the material considered here, gaining his powers through a Speed Force lightning event and continuing to develop under Barry Allen’s guidance.
Wallace already has an impressive toolkit: super speed, intangibility, time travel, and lightning control. However, the character is still learning. That distinction matters in a ranking based on established overall performance. Wallace is a legitimate future contender, but the current evidence does not support saying he is faster than the adult Flashes who have spent much longer mastering their abilities.
Why raw running speed is not the whole answer
Flash stories routinely blur several different kinds of speed:
- Top speed: the highest velocity a character can reach in a particular situation.
- Acceleration: how quickly the character reaches that speed.
- Combat speed: the ability to perceive, decide, react, and attack before an opponent can respond.
- Endurance: how long the character can maintain extreme performance.
- Speed Force manipulation: lending, stealing, redirecting, or otherwise altering speed.
- Temporal and dimensional movement: crossing time or reality, which is not equivalent to running faster in a straight line.
That is why a temporary Godspeed enhancement or Savitar’s speed theft should not automatically move either character above Wally. It is also why Jay’s tactical experience and Thawne’s temporal abilities matter even when the question is phrased as a race.
What about the Flashes from television, film, and alternate universes?
They should be ranked separately. Comic-book, television, film, animated, and alternate-universe versions do not share one consistent power scale. Even characters with the same name can have different origins, limits, feats, and continuity histories.
This list therefore focuses on the mainline comic-book versions and uses the Flash mantle-holder history as its organizing principle. It does not combine the Arrowverse Flashes, the 2023 film’s Barry Allen, or alternate versions such as Absolute Flash into the same supposedly objective table. A screen adaptation may be faster or slower for the needs of its own story without changing the comic ranking.

Final verdict
For the principal Flash mantle holders, the most defensible order is:
- Wally West
- Barry Allen
- Bart Allen
- Jay Garrick
Wally takes first because he combines the strongest sustained overall speed with the deepest demonstrated control of the Speed Force. Barry remains close enough that individual stories can reverse the result, Bart has exceptional untapped or short-term potential, and Jay is a near-light-speed veteran whose experience keeps him dangerous. Once villains and adjacent speedsters are added, the ranking becomes less about a single race and more about the difference between raw speed, specialized powers, and total combat effectiveness.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why is Wally West ranked as the fastest Flash?
Wally West has the strongest overall case because he eventually surpassed Barry Allen and developed unusually deep control of the Speed Force. His abilities include lending and stealing speed, sophisticated phasing, time travel, dimensional movement, and exceptional endurance. Some stories portray Barry as equal to or faster than Wally, so this ranking does not mean Wally wins every race in every continuity.
Is Barry Allen faster than Wally West?
Barry Allen is the closest established rival. Barry is the Silver Age Flash and the benchmark for later speedsters, with extensive feats involving intangibility, time travel, dimensional travel, lightning, and Speed Force control. Wally’s later development is the reason Barry ranks second overall rather than first.
How fast is the fastest Flash in miles per hour?
No single reliable miles-per-hour figure applies to the Flashes. “Faster than light” and “fastest man alive” are story-language claims, while different stories and continuities use different scales. A useful ranking must compare sustained speed, acceleration, combat reactions, endurance, and Speed Force abilities instead of inventing one exact number.
Does this ranking include the television and movie Flashes?
No. The comic-book versions, screen adaptations, and alternate-universe versions have different continuities and power scales. The ranking here covers the mainline comic-book versions; the Arrowverse, film versions, animated versions, and alternate Flashes should be compared in separate lists.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Wally West is the fastest overall mainline Flash, with Barry Allen as his closest established rival. Bart Allen’s potential is enormous, Jay Garrick is the most experienced original veteran, and characters such as Thawne, Godspeed, and Savitar are better judged as specialized threats than as definitively faster runners.
