Randy Moss disclosed in December 2024 that he had bile-duct cancer and had undergone a stent procedure followed by a roughly six-hour operation identified in reporting as a Whipple procedure. He later said the diagnosis was Stage 2 cholangiocarcinoma and that chemotherapy and radiation were part of his treatment. The latest substantial public update located, published June 6, 2026, said Moss was in remission and described his health as great.
The headline’s reference to “multiple surgeries” needs context: public reporting clearly documents a liver stent procedure and a later Whipple operation, but does not establish that Moss underwent several separate cancer-removal surgeries.
What happened to Randy Moss?
Moss first shared the news publicly during an Instagram Live on December 13, 2024. He said doctors had found a cancerous mass in the bile duct between the pancreas and liver. He also said a stent had been placed in his liver around Thanksgiving and that he subsequently underwent an operation lasting about six hours to remove the cancer.
Moss referred to himself as a “cancer survivor.” That wording is his own description and should be attributed to him. It does not, by itself, establish that the disease can never return or that he has been permanently cured.

In a September 2025 interview with Robin Roberts for Good Morning America, Moss provided additional detail. He said he had been diagnosed with Stage 2 bile-duct cancer, also known as cholangiocarcinoma, and that the operation involved removing parts of several organs. He also said his treatment included chemotherapy and radiation.
A June 6, 2026 Associated Press interview reported that Moss had completed treatment the previous fall and was in remission. He said his health was great, had returned to fishing and other activities, and had resumed his ESPN analyst work during the 2025 NFL season.
The cancer was in the bile duct, not described as pancreatic cancer
Public accounts describe the tumor as being in the bile duct between the pancreas and liver. Later reporting identified the disease as bile-duct cancer, or cholangiocarcinoma. It would be inaccurate to rewrite the public account as a diagnosis of pancreatic cancer.
The bile ducts carry bile from the liver and gallbladder to the small intestine. A tumor in the portion near the pancreas can require an extensive operation because the bile duct, pancreas, small intestine and nearby digestive structures are closely connected. The available reports do not disclose Moss’s exact pathology, tumor biology, lymph-node status, surgical margins, genetic testing or prognosis.

- A liver stent placement: Moss later said that a stent was placed around Thanksgiving, November 28, 2024. His public account connected the procedure with symptoms involving impaired bile drainage, including dark or discolored urine.
- A Whipple procedure: News reports identified his later, approximately six-hour cancer operation as a Whipple procedure, also called a pancreaticoduodenectomy.
A Whipple is a complex operation used for certain cancers involving the pancreas, bile duct or duodenum. In general, it may involve removing the head of the pancreas, the first part of the small intestine, the gallbladder and part of the bile duct, followed by reconstruction so that bile, pancreatic juices and food can pass through the digestive system again.
That general description explains why Moss said parts of several organs were removed. It does not establish the exact anatomy of his operation. Nor does it mean that every person having a Whipple loses precisely the same structures.
The wording “multiple surgeries” can therefore be misleading. A stent placement and a subsequent Whipple operation are both documented, but the available reporting does not show that Moss had multiple separate cancer-removal operations. The six-hour Whipple itself was a major, complex procedure.

What is a Whipple procedure?
The Whipple procedure, or pancreaticoduodenectomy, is one of the most demanding operations in abdominal surgery. Its exact extent depends on the location and characteristics of the disease. The operation typically includes removal of the pancreatic head, duodenum, gallbladder and part of the bile duct, followed by several surgical connections that restore the flow of digestive fluids and food.
Because it involves major organs and reconstruction of the digestive tract, recovery can be substantial. General risks described for the procedure include bleeding, infection, delayed stomach emptying, leakage at surgical connections and diabetes. Those are recognized potential risks of the operation generally—not reported complications in Moss’s case.

Where is Randy Moss now?
As of the June 6, 2026 report reviewed for this article, Moss was described as being in remission and said he felt great. He had returned to ESPN’s NFL analyst role for the 2025 season after taking time away from the program in late 2024. Reporting also described much of his recovery as taking place at home before he resumed activities such as fishing.
Remission is not the same as a guaranteed permanent cure. It means that signs of the cancer had decreased or were no longer detectable according to the account being reported. Future monitoring and medical follow-up remain part of cancer care, but Moss’s specific surveillance plan has not been made public.

How the diagnosis affected his ESPN career
Moss’s diagnosis prompted an extended absence from Sunday NFL Countdown in December 2024. He returned to the ESPN set in February 2025 and was expected to resume a full-time analyst role for the 2025 NFL season.
Before becoming a broadcaster, Moss built a Hall of Fame career as one of the NFL’s most prominent wide receivers. He played 14 seasons for the Minnesota Vikings, Oakland Raiders, New England Patriots, Tennessee Titans and San Francisco 49ers, and was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2018.
Readers looking for career background rather than medical information may also want a Randy Moss biography. Such a book can provide context about his football career and life, but it should not be treated as a source about his diagnosis or treatment.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.What remains private
Moss has chosen to share the broad outline of his illness and recovery, but not every medical detail. The following information has not been established by the public accounts used here:
- the name of the hospital or surgeon;
- the precise pathology or subtype beyond the public description of bile-duct cancer;
- the tumor’s genetic profile;
- lymph-node findings or surgical-margin results;
- the names and doses of chemotherapy drugs;
- the number of chemotherapy cycles;
- the details of his radiation treatment; and
- his individual long-term follow-up plan or survival outlook.
Keeping those limits clear matters. A public figure’s recovery can be encouraging without providing enough information to predict another patient’s treatment, complications or outcome.
