For a fast answer: start with Adolescence for a tense four-part crime drama, Arcane or Blue Eye Samurai for ambitious animation, Better Call Saul for a long-form drama, Black Mirror for unsettling science fiction, or The Haunting of Hill House for horror. If you want something lighter, try Derry Girls, The Good Place, or A Man on the Inside.
This is a guide to the 58-series Netflix recommendation feature updated by TechRadar on May 12, 2025. It is a historical recommendation snapshot, not a promise that every title remains in the United States Netflix catalog in 2026. Netflix availability changes by country and over time, and the guide includes both Netflix Originals and licensed programming.
How to use this Netflix shows guide
The source guide was organized by action, animation, comedy, drama, fantasy, horror, reality, romance, science fiction, and thriller. Its editorial standard was also unusually clear: a series generally needed an 80% or higher Rotten Tomatoes critics score and a recommendation from a member of the streaming team. That team included Tom Power, Lucy Buglass, Amelia Schwanke, and Grace Morris.
That threshold is a curation rule, not scientific proof that every show is universally the best. Rotten Tomatoes scores can change, and a score does not tell you whether a particular series suits your taste, available time, or tolerance for violence, horror, bleak subject matter, or subtitles.

Action series
Vikings: Valhalla
This historical-action sequel is set roughly a century after Vikings, shifting the story into another era of battles, political maneuvering, exploration, and dynastic conflict. The guide identifies its third season as the final season, making it a useful choice for viewers who want a large-scale saga with a defined endpoint rather than an indefinitely expanding franchise.
The Flash
The Flash is the superhero option in this group: a conventional comic-book series built around speed, villains, teamwork, and an expanding DC universe. It is a better fit for viewers who want a substantial, serialized superhero watch than for someone seeking a compact limited series.
Supacell
Supacell brings superpowers into a contemporary London setting. Its appeal is the contrast between extraordinary abilities and ordinary pressures: relationships, family responsibilities, danger, and the social consequences of people suddenly becoming powerful.
Black Summer
This is the stark, survival-focused choice. Black Summer treats a zombie outbreak as a fast-moving fight for food, shelter, trust, and movement rather than as a conventional heroic adventure. Expect a tense and often bleak watch.

Animation series
Arcane
Arcane is an emotionally driven fantasy-action series with painterly visuals, class conflict, political tension, and complicated family relationships. You do not need to be familiar with its video-game source to understand the central conflict, although fans of League of Legends may recognize its wider world.
Avatar: The Last Airbender
This recommendation refers to the original animated series, not Netflix’s live-action remake. It follows Aang and his friends through a carefully developed fantasy world of elemental powers, war, friendship, humor, and responsibility. It works for younger viewers, but its themes and long-form character development also reward adults.
Blue Eye Samurai
Blue Eye Samurai is a revenge story set in 17th-century Japan. Its striking animation supports a violent, adult drama about identity, exclusion, ambition, and retribution. Choose it when you want animation that is presented with the scale and intensity of prestige live-action television.
BoJack Horseman
Behind its talking-animal premise, BoJack Horseman is a dark comedy-drama about celebrity, addiction, depression, self-sabotage, and the difficulty of changing. It can be genuinely funny, but it is not lightweight comfort viewing throughout.
Castlevania
Castlevania adapts the atmosphere and mythology of the game franchise into a violent gothic fantasy. It combines vampires, monsters, political intrigue, and stylized action, making it a natural choice for viewers who like horror with a substantial serialized plot.
Cyberpunk: Edgerunners
This compact animated science-fiction story is set in the cyberpunk world of Night City. It focuses on a young person drawn into a dangerous criminal life shaped by inequality, technology, bodily modification, and corporate power. Its neon style is matched by a tragic, high-pressure story.
Love, Death + Robots
Love, Death + Robots is an anthology rather than one continuous narrative. Its short episodes move between science fiction, horror, fantasy, comedy, and experimental animation, so it is particularly useful when you want something you can sample in small portions.

Scavengers Reign
Scavengers Reign is the contemplative science-fiction animation pick. It places stranded survivors in an alien ecosystem whose beauty and danger are inseparable. The series favors atmosphere, strange biology, and slow discovery over straightforward action.

A Man on the Inside
Created by Michael Schur and starring Ted Danson, A Man on the Inside uses an undercover-investigation premise to build a warm comedy about aging, loneliness, connection, and purpose. It is a good choice when you want humor with an affectionate human center rather than an aggressively cynical sitcom.
Beef
Beef begins when two strangers become involved in a road-rage confrontation. What might have been a brief moment of bad judgment escalates into a much wider feud, exposing resentment, insecurity, family pressure, and the damage caused by refusing to let go. It is funny, uncomfortable, and increasingly intense.
Brooklyn Nine-Nine
This workplace sitcom follows detectives and staff in a New York police precinct. Its ensemble structure, affectionate character relationships, and episodic jokes make it an accessible choice for a relaxed, long-running comedy watch.
Community
Community starts with a study group at a community college and quickly becomes a formally inventive comedy willing to parody genres, television conventions, and its own premise. The result is especially rewarding if you enjoy fast dialogue, eccentric ensembles, and episodes that take unexpected structural detours.

Set in Northern Ireland during the Troubles, Derry Girls filters a politically difficult period through the chaotic daily life of a group of teenagers and their families. Its comedy is loud and affectionate, while the historical setting gives the series more emotional depth than a standard coming-of-age sitcom.
The Good Place
The Good Place turns questions about morality, ethics, identity, and the afterlife into a high-concept sitcom. It remains approachable because its philosophical ideas are carried by a funny ensemble and an ongoing mystery rather than by lectures.
Seinfeld
Seinfeld is the classic observational sitcom choice, built around friendships, social awkwardness, petty conflicts, and everyday irritations. Its deliberately self-centered characters make it a better fit for viewers who enjoy comedy without a conventional lesson or sentimental resolution in every episode.
Sex Education
Sex Education combines coming-of-age comedy with stories about intimacy, identity, friendship, family, and emotional communication. The central school setting gives it an easy comic engine, while its larger ensemble allows it to explore a broad range of experiences.

Adolescence
Adolescence is a four-part crime limited series, making it the clearest recommendation here for viewers who want a focused story they can complete quickly. Its subject matter is serious and its tone is tense; approach it as an intense examination of crime, family, and the world surrounding a young suspect rather than as casual background television.
Apple Cider Vinegar
Apple Cider Vinegar dramatizes the wellness fraud associated with Belle Gibson. It is a particularly relevant pick for viewers interested in the boundary between health claims, social-media storytelling, entrepreneurship, and deception. Because it is a dramatization, it should not be treated as a documentary or as a literal record of every event.

The Åre Murders
This crime drama uses a Swedish mountain setting for a murder investigation. The snowbound location and regional atmosphere make it a natural choice if you prefer Scandinavian mysteries and procedural tension over action-heavy crime series.
Better Call Saul
Better Call Saul is a patient, character-led crime drama about Jimmy McGill, the man who becomes Saul Goodman. Its strengths are gradual transformation, moral compromise, visual storytelling, and the consequences that spread from apparently manageable decisions.

The Crown
The Crown presents a dramatized history of Queen Elizabeth II’s reign and the political and personal pressures surrounding the British monarchy. It is best approached as historical drama: carefully produced and rooted in real public figures, but still shaped by interpretation, compression, and invented or reconstructed private scenes.
The Diplomat
The Diplomat combines international politics, personal conflict, and thriller mechanics. Its central appeal is the collision between public responsibility and private relationships, making it a good choice when you want political drama that keeps moving rather than a purely procedural account of diplomacy.
The Lincoln Lawyer
The Lincoln Lawyer is a legal drama built around a defense attorney who works from his car and takes on difficult cases. It offers courtroom strategy, investigations, professional rivalry, and a more immediately accessible pace than the slow-burn crime dramas elsewhere on this list.
The Queen’s Gambit
The Queen’s Gambit follows a young chess prodigy through competition, ambition, addiction, grief, and the search for belonging. You do not need to understand chess notation to follow the drama: the matches function as both contests and visual expressions of the protagonist’s changing mental state.
Optional companion: If the series makes you want to learn the game rather than simply watch it, a beginner chess set can turn the show’s central subject into a practical activity. It is not required, and it is not official Netflix merchandise.
The Last Kingdom
The Last Kingdom is a historical drama about divided loyalties, warfare, identity, and the formation of a kingdom. Its appeal comes from the tension between personal allegiance and larger political forces, as well as from its sustained action-adventure storyline.
Top Boy
Top Boy is a serious urban crime drama focused on the people, communities, and power structures surrounding the drug trade. It treats crime as a social and economic system rather than merely a series of stylish individual exploits, so expect a gritty and often morally complicated watch.
Fantasy series
One Piece
Netflix’s live-action One Piece adapts Eiichiro Oda’s manga. Its central strengths are adventurous world-building, a strong ensemble, humor, and an unapologetically imaginative tone. It is a good entry point for viewers curious about the franchise but not ready to commit to a very long animated series.
The Sandman
The Sandman adapts Neil Gaiman’s dark-fantasy comics and follows Morpheus, also known as Dream, after a long captivity. Its world moves between mythology, dreams, horror, history, and intimate human stories, so it is less a conventional quest fantasy than a collection of connected tales about stories, desire, loss, and responsibility.

The Witcher
The Witcher is the sword-and-sorcery choice, combining monsters, political conflict, magic, prophecy, and intersecting character journeys. Its setting is deliberately dense, so it suits viewers who enjoy expansive fantasy worlds and are willing to follow several storylines at once.
Horror series
Archive 81
Archive 81 is a supernatural horror series based on a podcast. Its central mystery develops through damaged recordings, an investigation, and an increasingly unsettling connection between the present and the past. It is a strong choice for viewers who prefer occult atmosphere and slow-building questions to constant jump scares.

The Fall of the House of Usher
This gothic horror story centers on a corrupt pharmaceutical family whose power and wealth begin to collapse. It uses a modern family saga to explore greed, privilege, guilt, and mortality, while drawing on the atmosphere and themes associated with Edgar Allan Poe.
Midnight Mass
Midnight Mass is an isolated-community horror drama about faith, authority, miracles, and the consequences of unquestioned belief. It takes its time with sermons and character conversations, so it is better suited to viewers who enjoy theological and psychological horror than to anyone seeking a simple creature feature.
The Haunting of Hill House
The Haunting of Hill House uses a haunted house and a fractured family to tell a story about grief, memory, trauma, and inheritance. Its supernatural scares are important, but the emotional structure is what gives the series its lasting force.
Reality series
Queer Eye
Queer Eye is a makeover and life-improvement format led by the Fab Five. The transformations involve more than clothes or home design: the series also focuses on confidence, routines, relationships, work, and the practical obstacles affecting each participant.

It is the choice for viewers who want romance on an ensemble scale, with each storyline operating inside a larger society of rules and reputations.
Heartstopper
Based on Alice Oseman’s graphic novels, Heartstopper follows Charlie and Nick as friendship develops into young love. Its appeal lies in its warmth, direct emotional communication, and attention to the uncertainty of growing into one’s identity and relationships.

One Day follows a relationship across multiple years, focusing on the way timing, circumstance, memory, and personal growth affect two people who keep returning to one another’s lives. Expect a romantic drama with substantial attention to the characters’ changing circumstances rather than a simple, uninterrupted love story.
Virgin River
Virgin River is the gentler, more escapist romance option. Its small-town setting supports stories about relationships, family, healing, community, and personal reinvention, making it suitable for viewers who prefer an ongoing ensemble drama with a comforting atmosphere.

Science-fiction series
Black Mirror
Black Mirror is an anthology examining technology, social behavior, and near-future dystopias. Because the episodes are largely self-contained, you can choose based on length or premise rather than committing to a single continuous plot. The tone ranges from bleak and disturbing to satirical and unexpectedly tender.
Sweet Tooth
Sweet Tooth follows Gus, a half-human, half-deer boy, through a post-apocalyptic America. Its premise supports adventure and danger, but the series is also concerned with innocence, prejudice, parenthood, survival, and the possibility of rebuilding a damaged world.

Thriller series
Black Doves
Black Doves is a Christmas-set London spy thriller starring Keira Knightley and Ben Whishaw. The seasonal setting contrasts with its espionage, danger, and suspense, making it a useful pick when you want a thriller that feels distinct from a standard police procedural.
The full source guide also groups other crime, spy, and suspense recommendations under thriller. The title-specific research record available for this article identifies Black Doves as its representative entry, so the availability and details of any additional thriller titles should be checked against the original guide before being presented as part of a complete current list.
What is missing from the title itself: Netflix Originals versus licensed shows
Not every recommendation is a Netflix Original. The guide deliberately mixes Netflix-produced programming with licensed series such as Seinfeld, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, The Flash, and Better Call Saul. That distinction matters because licensed titles are more exposed to territory-specific contracts and removal dates.
A Netflix logo or the fact that a show appears on Netflix does not establish that Netflix made or owns the series. For current announcements and production information, consult Netflix’s official Tudum and About Netflix properties. For the practical question of whether a particular title is streamable in the United States, check the Netflix catalog immediately before publication or viewing.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesAvailability, ratings, and dates: what not to assume
- The date is historical. The recommendations come from a guide updated on May 12, 2025. They should not be presented as a newly verified August 2026 ranking.
- Catalogs vary. A show may be available in one country and absent in another, or may leave and later return. The source guide itself warns that Netflix’s library changes monthly.
- Scores are snapshots. The guide used an 80% or higher Rotten Tomatoes critics-score rule in general, but displayed Rotten Tomatoes figures should not be described as current without rechecking them.
- Genres overlap. Arcane can be fantasy and action; Black Mirror can be horror as well as science fiction; and Beef moves between comedy and drama. The categories are navigation aids, not rigid classifications.
- Check content suitability. Several recommendations contain violence, horror, addiction, crime, abuse, death, or disturbing subject matter. A critics score does not function as an age-rating or content warning.
How to choose your next show
- Decide how much time you have. Pick Adolescence for a four-part limited story, an anthology such as Black Mirror or Love, Death + Robots for individual episodes, or a longer commitment such as Better Call Saul, The Crown, or Brooklyn Nine-Nine.
- Choose tone before genre. A horror label can mean gothic family drama in The Haunting of Hill House, religious and psychological horror in Midnight Mass, or supernatural mystery in Archive 81. Similarly, comedy ranges from warm in A Man on the Inside to dark in BoJack Horseman.
- Choose live action or animation. Animation is not a single audience category here: Avatar: The Last Airbender is an all-ages fantasy adventure, Blue Eye Samurai is an adult revenge drama, and Scavengers Reign is contemplative science fiction.
- Check whether you want adaptation baggage. One Piece, The Sandman, and Heartstopper are adaptations with substantial source material. You can watch each without reading first, but the original manga, comics, or graphic novels offer a way to explore the stories further.
- Verify availability last. Once you have chosen a title, check the Netflix catalog in your country. Do this after choosing by mood, because availability can change and a recommendation page cannot permanently guarantee a streaming home.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are all 58 shows Netflix Originals?
No. The guide combines Netflix Originals with licensed programming. Shows such as Seinfeld, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, The Flash, and Better Call Saul illustrate why appearing on Netflix does not necessarily mean that Netflix produced or owns a series.
Are these shows still available on Netflix in the United States?
Not necessarily. The source guide was updated on May 12, 2025, while Netflix catalogs change by territory and time. Check the current United States Netflix catalog for each title before watching.
How were the recommendations selected?
TechRadar said that a series generally needed an 80% or higher Rotten Tomatoes critics score and a recommendation from a member of its streaming team. That is an editorial curation standard, not a guarantee that every viewer will consider each show the best.
Which recommendation is best if I only want a short series?
Adolescence is the clearest short-form choice because the guide describes it as a four-part crime limited series. Black Mirror and Love, Death + Robots are also useful when you prefer self-contained episodes.

The Bottom Line
The strongest starting points are Adolescence for concentrated crime drama, Arcane for ambitious animation, Better Call Saul for a deep character saga, Black Mirror for speculative fiction, The Haunting of Hill House for emotionally grounded horror, and Heartstopper for warm romance. Treat the May 12, 2025 date as part of the recommendation: verify current U.S. availability, regional catalog differences, and any Rotten Tomatoes score before publishing or planning a watchlist.
