Queens of the Stone Age frontman Josh Homme said he was diagnosed with cancer in 2022 and that surgery to remove it was successful. He did not publicly identify the cancer type or describe a detailed treatment course. The separate emergency surgery announced by the band in July 2024 was not explained, and its connection, if any, to the earlier cancer was unknown.
What Homme said about his cancer diagnosis
Homme disclosed the diagnosis in an interview published in June 2023. He said the cancer had been diagnosed in 2022 and that surgery to remove it had succeeded. Coverage of the interview did not specify the cancer type or provide further details about treatment. Pitchfork’s June 12, 2023 report quoted him saying: “I’m extremely thankful that I’ll get through this, and I’ll look back at this as something that’s fucked up—but will have made me better.”
Homme also reflected on the experience in the interview: “I never say it can’t get any worse. I never say that, and I wouldn’t advise it. But I do say it can get better.” The Guardian’s June 13, 2023 coverage likewise reported the disclosure without identifying the cancer type or detailing his treatment.
What is known about the 2024 emergency surgery?
On July 9, 2024, Queens of the Stone Age said Homme had to return to the United States for emergency surgery. The band canceled eight European shows, saying: “Every effort was made to push through and play for you, but it is no longer an option to continue.” The band did not say what the operation was for. The Los Angeles Times reported that it was unclear whether the 2024 emergency surgery was related to the cancer surgery discussed in 2023.

What the band said about Homme’s health later in 2024
On August 23, 2024, Queens of the Stone Age announced that Homme needed essential medical care through the remainder of the year and that the band would cancel or postpone its remaining 2024 shows. The statement, reported by The Guardian on August 26, 2024, said: “Josh has been given no choice but to prioritise his health and to receive essential medical care through the remainder of the year.”
Those dated announcements do not establish Homme’s health status after 2024. They also do not show whether the emergency surgery was connected to his earlier cancer diagnosis.
