Queen Camilla hosted Tony Hudgell and Lyla O’Donovan and their families for a private garden party at Buckingham Palace on June 26, 2024, after both children missed the formal palace garden party on May 8. Tony missed it because of traffic; Lyla was unwell. At the private gathering, the families watched the Changing of the Guard, had tea in the garden’s Summer House and heard The Rifles Band. Camilla also presented Tony with his British Empire Medal, awarded following his nomination in the 2024 New Year Honours.
Why Tony and Lyla missed the May garden party
The Royal Family’s account says Tony’s family was delayed by traffic and Lyla missed the event because of ill health. Sky News reported more detail: a lorry fire stranded Tony’s adoptive family on the M20, while Lyla was in hospital. The lorry-fire explanation comes from Sky News, rather than the palace’s general description of traffic.
Tony’s family posted about their disappointment. The Royal Family account replied: “Sorry to hear this, Tony! We were looking forward to seeing you too. Fancy trying again another day? Leave it with us…”
What happened at Buckingham Palace
The private gathering took place on June 26, 2024. Tony and Lyla and their families watched the Changing of the Guard from the forecourt before joining the Queen for tea in the garden’s Summer House. They were served sandwiches, scones and iced biscuits decorated with a King’s Guard design while The Rifles Band played.

What Tony’s medal recognized
Camilla presented Tony with his British Empire Medal (BEM), following his nomination in the 2024 New Year Honours. The honour recognized his services to the prevention of child abuse; it was not a gift awarded simply for attending the tea party.
Sky News reported in 2024 that Tony had raised more than £1.8 million for charity and inspired “Tony’s Law,” which it described as an update to sentencing guidelines for child cruelty offences.

How the private gathering differed from a formal garden party
The June event was a private gathering arranged for the two families, not another general palace garden party. The Royal Family says more than 30,000 guests are invited to garden parties over the course of each year, with invitations made through a long-established network of sponsors; it says people cannot apply directly to Buckingham Palace. Sky News reported that around 8,000 people attended the May 2024 party. That attendance figure is Sky News’s report, not a figure given in the Royal Family’s account of the event.
