What happened between Lady Danbury and Violet’s father?
In “Gardens in Bloom,” the fifth episode of Netflix’s six-episode prequel Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story, young Agatha Danbury has a dalliance with Lord Ledger. Ledger is young Violet Bridgerton’s father, making the encounter a hidden connection between two women whose lives later become closely intertwined.

Adult Violet works out the connection after discovering that Lady Danbury owns one of the birthday crowns her father made. The crown is the clue that brings Ledger’s past with Agatha into view.
How did Shonda Rhimes describe the reveal?
In a May 5, 2023 interview with Shondaland’s Malcolm Venable, creator Shonda Rhimes said, “I loved that story.” She also called Violet’s delayed recognition a full-circle moment. Why does the romance matter to the series?
The reveal gives Violet and Danbury’s present-day relationship a private history neither woman has openly discussed. Rhimes’s comments also place the moment within the series’ broader interest in women influencing society despite the limits imposed on them. She described that theme as “soft power — how a woman rises to power that way.” In the interview, she connects the idea to Charlotte, Agatha Danbury, and Princess Augusta shaping events from the positions available to them.

Arsema Thomas plays young Agatha Danbury in Queen Charlotte; Adjoa Andoh plays the older Lady Danbury in Bridgerton. Netflix Tudum identifies Thomas in its cast guide. Thomas discussed her approach to the role, the character’s relationship with Charlotte, and female friendship in a June 2023 W Magazine profile. Rhimes’s account of the Ledger storyline comes from the separate Shondaland interview, not from Thomas.
