Princess Anne wore a paisley brocade dress and a historic pearl-and-sapphire choker to the International Financial Review dinner at London’s Grosvenor House Hotel on March 17, 2025. Fashion coverage identified the dress as an apparent rewear of the look she wore in 1971 to accept the Sportswoman of the Year Award. The choker’s reported value—about £200,000, or roughly $260,000—was an estimate attributed to jeweler Maxwell Stone, not a sale price or an official appraisal.
What Princess Anne wore to the 2025 dinner
Anne attended the International Financial Review dinner on behalf of Save the Children U.K., of which she is patron, according to Marie Claire’s report. The event took place at Grosvenor House Hotel in London on March 17, 2025.
Her outfit included a shimmery paisley brocade dress, a rich purple scarf draped over one shoulder, and a pearl-and-sapphire choker. The dress’s designer has not been identified in the coverage cited here.
Why the dress is linked to Anne’s 1971 look
Marie Claire reported that the 2025 dress appears to be a reworked version of the one Anne wore at age 21 when she accepted the 1971 Sportswoman of the Year Award. In the earlier appearance, the dress had dramatic bell sleeves. The outlet judged from the later look that the sleeves had been removed; that visual assessment is not confirmation of the garment’s tailoring history.

The 2025 dinner was not the first reported repeat of the paisley print: Marie Claire also noted Anne wearing it at a 2024 dinner for her Leuchie House patronage at the Palace of Holyroodhouse in Edinburgh.
What is known about the pearl-and-sapphire choker
Marie Claire described a sapphire choker with four rows of pearls and diamond bars. PureWow’s account specifies 20 diamond bars. The reports attribute the jewel’s history to Maxwell Stone of jeweler Steven Stone: he said it belonged to Empress Maria Feodorovna, who was photographed wearing it in the 1890s, and that Queen Mary later acquired it and left it to Queen Elizabeth II. According to this account, Elizabeth gave it to Anne in the early 1970s.

This provenance is reported through a jeweler and secondary fashion coverage, rather than established here through a royal collection record. The reports also note Anne wearing the choker at her 50th birthday and at the 2011 gala before Prince William’s wedding. PureWow quotes Stone as saying: “The Princess Royal has reserved it for special occassions, including her milestone birthday in 2000 and Prince William’s wedding gala in 2011,”
