What is the Broadway musical based on?
The stage musical draws on both Prince’s album Purple Rain and the film of the same name. The Broadway League advertises more than 20 Prince hits in the show, including “When Doves Cry,” “I Would Die 4 U,” “Take Me with You” and “The Beautiful Ones.” That is a selection, not a complete song list.
Who is creating the Broadway production?
The creative team announced for Broadway includes director Saheem Ali, book writer Peter Duchan and choreographer Ebony Williams. Jason Michael Webb leads the music team. The Shubert Organization’s announcement quotes Duchan: “Prince gave us the blueprint for this story, and our job has been to make sure his voice and music lead the show and to celebrate his remarkable legacy.”

Even with all of his new, but uncompromising, forays into pop Prince hasn't abandoned funk. Taken together, all of the stylistic experiments add up to a stunning statement of purpo
How does the Broadway version differ from the earlier Minneapolis production?
The Broadway team is distinct from the creative team announced for the earlier pre-Broadway world premiere at Minneapolis’s State Theatre. That 2025 announcement credited Branden Jacobs-Jenkins with the book, based on the original screenplay by Albert Magnoli and William Blinn, and Lileana Blain-Cruz with direction. It credited Prince with the story, music and lyrics. Those Minneapolis credits should not be confused with the currently announced Broadway team.
Who is in the cast, and where can you buy tickets?
The cited Broadway announcement establishes the production and creative team but does not establish a cast list or a ticket seller. For current casting, ticket availability and authorized purchase routes, use the official show site rather than relying on outdated listings. Sales information and schedules can change.

What should fans know about the album and film?
The original Purple Rain album is the most direct companion for the musical, which adapts its story and music alongside the film. A film edition is another relevant companion, but the surfaced 4K Blu-ray reference does not verify current stock or edition availability. Check the listing before purchasing.
