Where to find the official transcript
The federal GovInfo archive preserves the official record of the January 15 farewell address. The document was released by the Office of the Press Secretary on January 16, 2025, and is the best source for checking the wording of the speech.
For the transcript, search GovInfo for the event title “Farewell Address” together with January 15, 2025. This is preferable to relying on an automatically generated transcript from a video platform, particularly when checking names, quotations, or policy references.
What Biden discussed
Biden delivered the address during his final week in office, five days before Donald Trump’s inauguration on January 20, 2025. The speech served both as a review of his administration and as a final public warning about risks he believed could affect the country’s democratic system.
Contemporary coverage described Biden’s remarks as a reflection on his administration’s accomplishments, his long career in public service, and the legacy he hoped to leave. He also warned about the potential emergence of an ultra-wealthy “oligarchy” and its effect on democracy.

Do not confuse it with Biden’s other final addresses
Several Biden speeches took place during his final week in office. The event covered here is specifically the nationally televised Oval Office address on January 15.
- January 13, 2025: Biden delivered a separate foreign-policy address at the State Department.
- January 15, 2025: He delivered the farewell address to the nation from the Oval Office at 8 p.m. Eastern.
- January 16, 2025: He delivered separate farewell remarks to the armed forces at Joint Base Myer-Henderson Hall.
Searching only for “Biden farewell speech” can therefore produce more than one event. The date, Oval Office location, and title “President Biden Delivers a Farewell Address to the Nation” identify the address discussed in this article.
Why some archive listings show 7:50 p.m.
The Department of Defense’s DVIDS webcast archive lists a scheduled window from approximately 7:50 p.m. to 8:21 p.m. Eastern on January 15, 2025. That listing does not establish that Biden began speaking at 7:50 p.m.
