On April 7, 2016, Pornhub launched a free app for Roku set-top boxes. It offered Roku owners access to roughly five million videos and gave Premium subscribers an ad-free experience with additional material. The strange part was not simply that adult video had reached a television. It was that the service appeared on a mainstream living-room platform through a distribution route that was difficult to find, while providing a deliberately stripped-down version of the website.
A free Pornhub app for the living room
In 2016, streaming boxes were becoming ordinary household technology. Roku was one of the best-known ways to put internet video on a television, and its interface was designed around the assumption that people would browse channels from a shared living-room screen.
That made Pornhub’s Roku launch an unusually conspicuous cultural collision. A website commonly associated with private computer or phone use had been adapted for a device connected to the family television. Contemporary coverage from Gizmodo, The Next Web, and IBTimes UK treated that contrast as the central story: the app was technically straightforward, but its setting made it feel bizarre.
The launch was also notable because it was presented as Pornhub’s first set-top-box application. Rather than keeping the service confined to browsers and mobile devices, the company was testing whether its enormous video catalog could become part of the same television ecosystem as mainstream streaming services.

What the 2016 app offered
The basic proposition was simple:
- The Roku app was free to download.
- Reports described access to approximately five million Pornhub videos.
- Users with Pornhub Premium accounts could log in for an ad-free experience and access additional premium material.
- The app was designed for browsing on a Roku-connected television rather than reproducing every feature of the website.
The catalog figure was a contemporary estimate, not a statement about the service’s current library. It should be understood as a description of what reports said at launch, not as a present-day content count or a guarantee that every listed video was available in every location.
It was much simpler than the website
The Roku version was not a full television copy of Pornhub.com. Contemporary reports described an interface organized around basic categories and popularity, with considerably less discovery functionality than users would find in a web browser.
Several familiar website features were missing or limited:
- No related-video links in the usual web-style browsing flow.
- No pornstar or tag-based navigation.
- Little meaningful filtering of search results.
- Imprecise seeking through videos, according to Gizmodo’s report.
That design made sense from a product perspective. A television remote is slower and less precise than a keyboard or touchscreen, and a service may want to reduce the amount of typing required on a shared screen. But the result was a notably less capable product. The app exposed a large catalog without giving viewers the same tools for navigating it.

It had created a narrower, more controlled browsing experience suited to the limitations—and awkwardness—of a Roku interface.
The app was not a normal Roku Channel Store listing
One of the launch’s strangest details was how users were expected to find the application. Gizmodo reported that it was not searchable through Roku’s ordinary channel store and instead required a direct download link.
That distinction matters. Calling it an ordinary official Roku Channel Store release would misdescribe the way it was distributed. Although the app was reported as a Pornhub application for Roku, its absence from normal store search made it feel more like a concealed or private addition than a conventional channel.

The distribution method also reflected the platform tension around adult content. Roku hardware was a mainstream consumer product, but platform operators have historically treated sexually explicit applications differently from ordinary entertainment channels. A direct link allowed the app to exist on the platform without placing it prominently in the standard storefront experience.
Why Pornhub wanted television platforms
The Roku app was part of a wider platform strategy rather than an isolated experiment. Pornhub executive Corey Price told Gizmodo that the company wanted to reach platforms that permitted adult content. Contemporary reports also said Pornhub planned to add Chromecast support through its Android app by the end of April 2016.
That Chromecast detail should be treated carefully. It was a reported plan, not proof that the integration shipped, remained available, or works with current Chromecast or Google TV hardware. The same coverage said Apple TV was considered unlikely because of Apple’s restrictions on pornographic applications.
Pornhub also said it would continue improving browser-based versions for smart televisions and consoles. Taken together, those plans show a company trying to move beyond the traditional desktop-browser experience and into every television route that would accept the content: dedicated streaming boxes, casting systems, smart-TV browsers, and game consoles.
For readers interested in the hardware side of that 2016 shift, a Roku streaming device is the relevant product category. That is a historical connection, not a recommendation to buy one for this purpose: current Roku hardware should not be assumed to restore access to the old Pornhub app.

The app’s technical feature list was modest. Its cultural significance came from where it placed the service.
On a phone or laptop, adult content could be treated as an individual activity conducted through a personal screen. A Roku-connected television carried different social expectations. The television was usually positioned in a shared room, controlled by a remote, and associated with family viewing. Pornhub’s arrival on that kind of device made the boundary between private internet use and public household media unusually visible.
This did not mean that every Roku owner would use the application in a shared setting. It meant the product’s default environment created an obvious mismatch between platform design and subject matter. Roku supplied the living-room infrastructure; Pornhub supplied a catalog that users generally expected to keep private. That mismatch explains why contemporary articles framed the launch as weird rather than as a major streaming-technology breakthrough.

What changed after the launch
The 2016 app belonged to an earlier period of Roku distribution, when so-called private or non-certified channels could be added outside the platform’s normal public channel catalog. Roku later changed that policy. Reporting in November 2021 said support for those channels would end on March 1, 2022, affecting adult-content channels that had relied on the private-channel system.

Roku’s current support information explains more generally that a channel can disappear if its content provider removes it or if Roku removes it for policy reasons. A current third-party specialist guide reports that the old Pornhub Roku channel and its activation code no longer work, but that specific claim is secondary reporting rather than a direct current announcement from Pornhub or Roku.
The practical conclusion is straightforward: the old Roku app should be discussed in the past tense. Readers should not treat historical activation codes or old direct-download instructions as current installation guidance, and buying a current Roku player does not establish that the 2016 application is available.
What the app tells us about streaming in 2016
The launch illustrates three characteristics of the streaming market at the time:
- Television was becoming the default destination for online video. Services that began on computers increasingly wanted access to the large screen.
- Platform rules mattered as much as technical capability. A service could build an app, but distribution depended on whether a device maker would permit and expose it.
- “Available on TV” did not mean “equivalent to the website.” The Roku app offered a large catalog but fewer discovery and navigation tools.
Pornhub’s app therefore represented both expansion and compromise. It expanded the service onto a mainstream set-top box, but it did so through a less visible distribution path and a simplified interface. The product was not a polished attempt to make the entire website feel at home on television. It was a test of whether the television platform would accept the service at all.

Pornhub launched a free Roku app on April 7, 2016. It reportedly gave Roku owners access to around five million videos, with Premium login support for ad-free viewing and additional content. The app was limited compared with the website, was reportedly not searchable in Roku’s standard channel store, and arrived as Pornhub explored Chromecast, smart-TV browsers, and console access.
Its weirdness came from the combination of an adult-video service, a mainstream shared television, and a hidden-style distribution method. Roku’s later policy changes mean the launch is now best understood as a snapshot of 2016 streaming culture—not as a current Roku installation opportunity.

Frequently Asked Questions
Did Pornhub really have a Roku app?
Yes. Contemporary technology reports said Pornhub launched a free Roku app on April 7, 2016. It was reportedly distributed through a direct link rather than being searchable in Roku’s ordinary channel store.
How many videos did the 2016 Roku app include?
Reports at the time described access to approximately five million videos. That was a launch-era figure and should not be interpreted as the current size of Pornhub’s catalog.
Could Premium subscribers log in to the app?
Yes. Contemporary coverage said Pornhub Premium users could log in for an ad-free experience and access additional premium material.
Is the old Pornhub Roku app still available?
Readers should not assume that it is. Roku ended support for private or non-certified channels on March 1, 2022, and current secondary reporting says the old Pornhub channel and activation code no longer work. Historical installation instructions should not be treated as current.
Was Chromecast support confirmed?
No. In 2016, reports described Chromecast support as a planned addition to Pornhub’s Android app. That reporting does not prove the integration launched or that current Chromecast or Google TV devices reproduce the old experience.
The Bottom Line
Pornhub’s 2016 Roku app was a real but deliberately limited experiment: a free, hard-to-find television gateway to a huge adult-video catalog. It mattered less for its technology than for the platform contradiction it exposed—private-oriented content being placed on a mainstream shared-screen device. Roku’s later private-channel policy changes make it a historical story, not a current app recommendation.
