A fabricated AI image can make it appear that a disheveled stranger is inside someone’s home. In October 2025, multiple U.S. police departments warned that this social-media prank had frightened recipients into making genuine 911 calls, sending officers to situations that initially looked like home invasions or other emergencies.
The image may be fake, but the fear, emergency call, police response and risk of confrontation can all be real.
What is the “AI homeless man” prank?
The prank typically begins with a real photograph of a room, hallway, doorway, kitchen or couch. An AI image generator or editing tool is then used to insert a realistic-looking, disheveled man into the scene. The altered image is sent to a relative, friend, parent, spouse or roommate with a message suggesting that the person is inside the home, refusing to leave, asking for food or behaving threateningly.
The recipient’s reaction may then be recorded and posted to TikTok or another social platform. The supposed intruder is digitally fabricated; the background may be a genuine photograph of the residence. Reported variations have shown the person sitting on a couch, eating in a kitchen, standing near a door or using household items. The format is not completely standardized, and reports have referred to both AI-generated and AI-altered images or videos.

Salem Police described the trend in a public-safety announcement posted October 6, 2025. The trend was then reported by several other news organizations and police agencies.
Why police say it can become dangerous
The central problem is misclassification: a recipient may reasonably believe that an actual intruder is inside.
- A realistic image creates apparent evidence. A conventional text prank asks someone to imagine a situation. A personalized image places the supposed stranger in a familiar room.
- The accompanying message adds urgency. Claims that someone will not leave, is threatening people or needs immediate help can make the situation seem to be unfolding in real time.
- The recipient may call 911. Dispatchers must initially treat a credible report of a possible break-in, intruder or person in danger as potentially genuine.
- Officers may arrive before the deception is disclosed. Responders cannot safely assume that a call is a joke simply because similar images have circulated online.
Police have warned that officers could be dispatched with lights and sirens to what sounds like a real home-invasion call. If responders reach the address before the prank is explained, they may enter or confront people based on an apparently credible emergency report. A frightened resident might also arm themselves, search for an imagined intruder or confront someone who is not there.
False calls can also occupy dispatchers and emergency personnel who may be needed elsewhere. These are risk pathways, not claims that every reported prank produced each of these outcomes.

What police departments reported
The available reports document separate local warnings and incidents, not a verified national total.
- Salem, Massachusetts: Police said they had investigated three incidents involving people who genuinely believed a break-in or threat was occurring. One reported example involved someone believing that a relative had picked up a hitchhiker who was threatening them.
- West Bloomfield, Michigan: Police said at least one local prank had been reported and issued a warning about the trend. CBS News Detroit described the department’s concerns.
- Round Rock, Texas: Police1 reported that police received two 911 calls in early October 2025 connected to fabricated images sent by teenagers to parents. That account should be understood as attributed reporting, rather than a nationwide incident count.
- Yonkers, New York: Police posted an example image and said the prank had occurred several times, warning that officers might arrive before the deception was revealed.
ABC News summarized warnings from departments in these communities and elsewhere in the United States. The reports show that multiple agencies encountered or warned about the format during October 2025; they do not establish how widespread it remains after that period.
Can someone be charged?
Possibly, but creating an image is not automatically the same act as making a false emergency report.

- Making or sending a fabricated image;
- Privately telling another person a fictional story;
- Knowingly causing the recipient to contact police or 911;
- Knowingly making, or causing someone else to make, a false report to emergency services;
- Creating an incident that leads to injury, property damage, obstruction or another offense.
Salem police cited Massachusetts General Law Chapter 269, Section 14B, concerning false information or reports to public-safety officials. Local reporting described a possible penalty of up to 2½ years in prison or a $1,000 fine for relevant conduct. That is a Massachusetts warning and should not be generalized to every state.
Police warned that participants could face criminal consequences, particularly when a prank results in a false emergency report. The specific offense, penalty and likelihood of prosecution depend on the jurisdiction and the facts: what was communicated, whether the sender anticipated an emergency call, whether police were knowingly misled and whether anyone was injured or placed at risk.
A recipient who honestly believes an emergency is real is not in the same position as a person who knowingly fabricates information for police. Calling 911 in good faith is different from deliberately making a false report.

Do not assume that an image is fake merely because AI images can be edited. At the same time, do not confront a suspected intruder just to test whether the image is genuine.

- Prioritize immediate safety. If you are at the home and believe someone may be inside, move to a safer location if you can do so without crossing the suspected person’s path.
- Call 911 if there may be an immediate threat. Follow the dispatcher’s instructions. Do not delay an emergency call solely because the image looks artificial or the sender may be joking.
- Explain what you received. Tell dispatchers that the report came through a message and that the image may be AI-generated or digitally altered. Provide the address and any information about people who may be inside.
- Verify independently when safe. Contact the supposed sender using a known phone number or another established channel, rather than relying only on the account or number that sent the alarming message.
- Preserve evidence. Keep the original message, image or video, account name, phone number, links and timestamps. Do not delete material that may help police determine who created or distributed it.
- Do not confront anyone. If police are responding, stay in a safe place and follow instructions rather than searching the home or approaching a person.
Reverse-image searches and visual inspection may help identify reposted material, but neither can reliably establish that a rapidly unfolding emergency is harmless. A real room, a convincing composite and a genuine danger can look similar in a stressful moment.

The prank does not merely invent an intruder. It uses homelessness and a stereotyped appearance as shorthand for danger, criminality, contamination or unwanted presence.
Salem police said the trend dehumanizes people experiencing homelessness. Housing advocates and other commentators likewise criticized it for reinforcing the idea that homeless people are inherently threatening or criminal. The label is therefore an ethical issue separate from the emergency-response risk:

- A target is frightened for entertainment.
- Emergency resources may be diverted.
- People experiencing homelessness are used as a visual prop.
- AI makes the stereotype appear photographic and evidentiary rather than obviously imaginary.
- Viral engagement can reward increasingly realistic and alarming deception.
The supposed intruder’s appearance is not evidence of a person’s character or behavior. Using it as a shortcut for threat turns a real group of people into a punchline.

How AI changes older prank tactics
The underlying deception is familiar: tell someone that an alarming event is happening and record the reaction. AI changes the persuasive force by allowing the prankster to personalize the scene. The recipient does not have to imagine an unknown person in an unknown place; they can see an apparently familiar room with a supposed stranger inside it.
AI is not the sole cause of the danger. The risk comes from the combination of a photorealistic fabrication, knowledge of the recipient’s home or family, an urgent message and the possibility that emergency services will be contacted before anyone verifies the claim.
Some coverage mentioned particular image-generation or editing products. Those references should not be treated as a finding that one tool caused the trend or was uniquely responsible. The same safety concern applies regardless of which application produced the altered image.
What the warning does—and does not—mean
The warnings do not mean that every image showing a stranger in a home is fake, or that people should ignore possible break-ins. They also do not establish a nationwide incident total or prove that every participant will be prosecuted.
They mean that a fabricated digital image can trigger a real emergency response. A person receiving such a message may not know whether the sender created it, forwarded it or is themselves in danger. The safest decision depends on where the recipient is, who may be inside and whether there is an immediate threat—but reasonable belief of danger should be reported rather than dismissed.
