Some Roku users may encounter Pluto TV loading, playback, or app-launch problems, but the available evidence does not confirm a Roku-wide Pluto TV outage. The cause could be a Pluto TV service issue, the Roku app or software, your network, or—when the picture is black—an HDMI or display problem. Start by checking whether the failure is limited to one channel, one app, or one device; then work through the fixes below without factory-resetting your Roku.
First, find out where the problem is
Symptoms that look similar can have different causes: Pluto TV may not open, may stay on a loading screen, buffer or pixelate, show a black picture, or play audio without video. One live channel might fail while the rest of the service works. Or the Roku itself may freeze, or other apps may fail too. Treat these as clues rather than proof of a particular cause.
Roku recommends checking other titles in the same app and trying another app to determine whether playback trouble is isolated or broader (Roku playback troubleshooting).
- Try another Pluto TV channel or on-demand title.
- Open another streaming app on the same Roku.
- Try Pluto TV on a phone or computer connected to the same internet service.
- If possible, check Pluto TV on another household device or another network.
- Look for a service notice on Pluto TV’s official website, help pages, or social channels. Note the time and exact error message.
| What you see | Where to investigate first |
|---|---|
| Only one Pluto TV channel or title fails | A channel- or stream-specific issue |
| All Pluto TV content fails, but other Roku apps work | Pluto TV’s service or Roku app state |
| Pluto TV fails on several devices | Pluto TV service, account, or network path |
| Pluto TV works elsewhere but not on this Roku | The Roku app, Roku software, network path, or display connection |
| Several apps buffer or fail | Your home network, internet service, or Roku connection |
| Black picture but audio plays | App or display behavior; check HDMI if you use an external Roku player |
| Roku freezes outside Pluto TV | Roku system, power, network, or hardware |
These are diagnostic pointers, not confirmed causes. A service notice is a reason to wait and check again; without one, don’t assume every Pluto TV problem is an outage.

Try these fixes in order
Make one change at a time and test Pluto TV again before moving on. Roku’s app troubleshooting guidance includes restarting, updating, and removing and reinstalling a troublesome app.
1. Restart Pluto TV
- Go to the Roku Home screen and highlight Pluto TV.
- Press the Star/Options button on the remote.
- Choose Restart if that option appears.
- Reopen the app and try more than one channel or title.
2. Restart the Roku
Use the system restart rather than simply pressing the TV’s power button:
- Press Home, then go to Settings > System.
- Select Power, if that submenu appears, then System restart.
If the Roku is unresponsive, unplug it from power for at least 10 seconds, reconnect it, and wait for it to return to Home before opening Pluto TV. Roku explains the restart options in its system restart guidance.

3. Check for Pluto TV and Roku updates
To check for an app update, highlight Pluto TV on Home, press Star/Options, and select Check for updates. Wait for the check to finish, then reopen the app.
To check Roku software, go to Home > Settings > System > Software update > Check Now. Menu names can differ by device or software revision. Roku says devices check automatically at setup, when powered on, and periodically—typically every 24–36 hours—so a manual check can help if the device has been offline for a while. See Roku’s software update instructions.
4. Check the connection and restart the network equipment
On Roku, go to Settings > Network > About to inspect connection information. Use Check connection if shown. Also test other devices on the same network. A weak signal, congestion, or an unstable connection can affect playback even when the internet appears to work for basic browsing.

If multiple apps or devices are having trouble, restart the network equipment in this order, following Roku’s Wi-Fi troubleshooting guidance:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Unplug the Roku, modem, and router.
- Wait about 15 seconds.
- Plug in the modem and let it reconnect.
- Plug in the router and let it reconnect.
- Reconnect or restart the Roku, then test Pluto TV.
If the problem continues, a short test on a phone hotspot can help isolate the home network. If Pluto TV works on the hotspot, the home Wi-Fi, router, or ISP path becomes more likely. If the Roku supports Ethernet, testing a wired connection can help distinguish Wi-Fi problems from app or device problems. These tests are diagnostic; neither guarantees a fix.
5. Remove and reinstall Pluto TV
If restarting and updating do not help, reinstall the app:

- Restart the Roku.
- Open the Roku Streaming Store, search for Pluto TV, and add it again.
- Open Pluto TV and sign in if prompted.
Reinstalling can clear a damaged app state, but it is not guaranteed to resolve a service or network problem. Sign-in behavior and saved preferences depend on the app and account; do not assume viewing history or settings will be preserved.

Buffering, pixelation, or repeated reloading
Test another channel and another streaming app. If several apps are affected, focus on Wi-Fi signal, household network congestion, and the router or ISP before changing Pluto TV settings. Move the Roku or router if practical, reduce competing network traffic, and try the restart or hotspot tests above. A stable connection matters; there is no single internet-speed figure that diagnoses every buffering problem.

Black screen, flicker, or audio without video
If the Roku is a player or Streaming Stick connected to a TV, confirm the correct HDMI input, reseat the cable, and try another HDMI port. If available, test another cable. Restart both the TV and Roku. If the Roku is powered from a TV USB port and restarts or behaves inconsistently, use an appropriate wall power adapter if your model supports it. Roku lists HDMI and power checks among its device troubleshooting steps. These checks are more relevant to display or handshake symptoms than to ordinary network buffering.

“Not enough memory,” “Can’t run app,” or “Insufficient memory”
Restart the Roku first. If the message remains, remove apps you no longer use: highlight an app, press Star/Options, and choose Remove app. Retry Pluto TV, and check the network as well—Roku notes that these messages can also be associated with connection problems. See Roku’s guidance for “Can’t run app” errors.
Only one channel fails
Try other Pluto TV streams. If they work, the issue may be confined to that channel or stream rather than the Roku as a whole. Check again later and report the affected channel and time to Pluto TV if the problem persists.
Sign-in or availability issue
A sign-in or provider-authentication error is different from a playback outage. Follow the prompt in the app and contact Pluto TV if it repeats. Content availability can vary by country and licensing region; a title that is unavailable in your region does not by itself mean the app is broken.
When to wait, and who to contact
If multiple Pluto TV channels fail on more than one device, other apps work, and Pluto TV reports an interruption or maintenance, wait and check again rather than repeatedly changing device settings. During a provider-side problem, a Roku reset, DNS change, or hardware purchase is unlikely to help.
Contact Pluto TV when the issue is limited to its service, occurs across devices or networks, or continues after updating and reinstalling. Include your Roku and TV models, Roku software version, Pluto TV app version if visible, exact error, affected channel or title, date and time with time zone, and whether other apps or networks work.
Contact Roku when the device freezes outside Pluto TV, several apps fail, it cannot connect to any network, it repeatedly restarts, or you cannot install the app from the Streaming Store. Contact your ISP or router manufacturer when several household devices lose connectivity, a hotspot works but home Wi-Fi does not, or other services buffer at the same time.
Quick Recap
What not to do first
- Don’t factory-reset for one app failure. A reset erases settings and requires setup and app sign-ins again. Reserve it for persistent, broader device trouble after simpler steps fail; see Roku’s factory-reset explanation.
- Don’t change several settings at once. You will not know which change mattered, and troubleshooting becomes harder.
- Don’t assume DNS is the fix. DNS changes are not a first-line Roku solution and may interfere with household filtering or parental controls.
- Don’t use unofficial cache-clearing button sequences. Roku’s supported app troubleshooting path is to restart, update, or remove and reinstall the app.
- Don’t buy a new Roku, router, or cable just because Pluto TV fails once. Consider hardware only if multiple apps or the Roku itself show persistent problems, or a network test points to a broader issue.
