Piece by Piece is a 2024 animated biographical documentary about Pharrell Williams, directed by Morgan Neville. It uses LEGO animation to retell Williams’ life through his own narration and interviews with people from his musical world. The result looks playful, but its structure is documentary—not a fictional LEGO adventure.
What is Piece by Piece about?
The film follows Williams from his Virginia childhood through his rise as a producer and performer, including his work with The Neptunes and a run of hit records. Focus Features describes it as an animated biopic; Universal’s synopsis presents it as a journey through Williams’ life told with LEGO animation. Focus Features’ film page lists the film as a 2024 release.
It is a selective portrait rather than a complete account of every stage or controversy in Williams’ career. BFI Sight and Sound describes the film’s route through his childhood and musical peers, while noting that collaborator Chad Hugo is sidelined. That is a critic’s description of the film’s emphasis, not a full biography of either musician. BFI’s review offers a separate critical assessment.
How does the LEGO documentary format work?
The animation is a visual treatment of documentary material. The Associated Press reports that interviews were recorded in person, over Zoom or by phone, then animated as LEGO figures. Williams’ voiceover and interview segments provide the account, with guests including Jay-Z, Snoop Dogg and Missy Elliott represented in brick-built form. The AP’s interview with Williams and Neville explains the approach.

The format lets the filmmakers visualize memory and music without relying on conventional archival footage for every moment. Williams told the AP that the film “paraphrases” his life. Its playful style should not be mistaken for a claim that every scene is literal or comprehensive.
Is the film factual, or does it leave things out?
Piece by Piece is an authorized biography, not an independent investigation. The AP review reports that the end credits include the disclaimer, “Not everything in this film is 100% accurate. For example, Pharrell never went to space.” The space sequence is fantastical; more broadly, the film compresses and stylizes a real life. The AP review discusses the film’s tone and limitations.

Is it worth watching?
If you are interested in Williams’ music or in how animation can reshape documentary interviews, the LEGO approach is the film’s central attraction. The AP review calls it bright and clever, while also noting pacing and narrative limitations, including difficulty settling on an ending. BFI finds the style playful but argues that the success story has limited dynamic range and softens some controversies. These are distinct critical judgments; your response may depend on whether you want an inventive, buoyant portrait or a more searching career analysis.
