Tommy Shelby did not die at the end of season six of Peaky Blinders. The illness that appeared to be killing him was a fabrication, and the series closes with him riding away on a white horse. The Immortal Man picks up his story in Birmingham in 1940, during World War II. Netflix’s coverage dated March 20, 2026 describes the film as streaming on its service, though availability varies by territory.
The finale details below are spoilers for the series. The section on how the film ends is marked separately.
How season six ended
Netflix Tudum’s series-finale explainer describes the final episode, “Lock and Key,” as the close of the six-season Shelby story, “at least for now.” Four developments matter for the film.
- Michael Gray’s car bomb. Michael Gray attempts to kill Tommy with a car bomb. Tommy’s deception leaves Michael dead.
- The diagnosis. Tommy comes to believe he is dying of a brain tumour and says goodbye to his loved ones. He plans to kill himself. He then discovers that the doctor who diagnosed him was tied to Oswald Mosley. The diagnosis was a ruse, and he is not dying of the illness.
- The family cost. Lizzie leaves him. He makes peace with his family, including Arthur. Duke joins the Peaky Blinders.
- The white horse. Tommy’s personal effects burn, cutting the tie to his criminal life. In the final shot, he rides a white horse, apparently free to begin a new life.
What the ending settles and what it leaves open
The finale is open-ended, but it is not a reset. Tommy leaves behind his old possessions and his criminal identity. Nothing in the finale returns him to the gang, which is why the film has to explain how he is back in the story.

Where the Shelby family stands
The family that closes season six is smaller and more divided than the one that opened the series. Michael is dead. Lizzie is gone. Tommy has repaired some relationships, but his choices and losses have changed them. Duke is the youngest Shelby in the story and the one whose path leads into the film.
What The Immortal Man is
Netflix Tudum describes the film as a continuation of the six-season gangster saga. Its announcement says the television story followed the Shelbys from 1919 to 1934, and the film moves the family into the Second World War. The Netflix Media Center gives its location and year as Birmingham, 1940.

How the film picks up Tommy’s story
Duke is the bridge
Tommy’s estranged son Duke leads a younger generation of Peaky Blinders. In the film, Duke gets pulled into a scheme by the British Union of Fascists. Netflix Tudum describes that scheme as an effort to help Germany win the war. Duke’s leadership of the younger group is part of the film’s new status quo, not something the finale establishes.

Beckett and the fascist plot
Netflix Tudum names Nazi agent Beckett as the figure who opposes Tommy. The threat reaches beyond gang rivalries and into the fate of family and country, which is the main change from the series.
From the First World War to the Second
The series began with Tommy damaged by World War I. Creator Steven Knight told Netflix Tudum that he intended to carry the family story into the next war and the next generation: “I always thought … that I wanted it to be the story of a family between two wars, and we take it to the Second World War.” The statement appears in Netflix Tudum’s film-ending explainer dated March 20, 2026.

Spoiler warning: how the film ends
Major spoilers follow.
Netflix Tudum’s ending explainer describes a final confrontation involving Tommy, Duke, Beckett, and the Peaky Blinders. Tommy is shot and dies. As he dies, he mouths “In the bleak midwinter,” a phrase that echoes the opening of the television series and the characters’ experience of surviving World War I. According to the explainer, Tommy’s body is burned in a Romani funeral, and his narrated final words return to his family.
Cillian Murphy described his return to the role this way, as Netflix Tudum attributes it: “One final job, you know?” The line is Murphy’s, not Tommy’s.
