Puzhu is a 2022 Malayalam crime drama in which Mammootty plays Kuttan, a father whose sense of safety collapses as attempts on his life multiply. Critics single out Mammootty’s restraint and the chill he brings to the role. Whether that amounts to “staggeringly good” is a matter of critical judgment, and the reviews below show where critics agree and where they part ways.
What the film is about
SonyLIV’s official title page describes a retired police officer whose suspicions grow as the attempts on his life increase. The suspicion does not stop at strangers. It extends to the people around him, including his young son. That is the film’s central unease: a man who is hunted and, at the same time, cannot fully trust the household he is trying to protect. The premise works as a crime thriller, but its emotional weight sits in the father-son relationship.

Why critics single out Mammootty
The clearest praise comes from The Times of India. Its reviewer, Anna Mathews, gave the film 3.5 out of 5 and praised the nuance Mammootty brings to Kuttan. In the review, published May 12, 2022, Mathews wrote: “Half the fun of debut director Ratheena’s Puzhu is in watching Mammootty.”
That 3.5/5 is one reviewer’s score, not an industry consensus. It is worth reading the praise as a description of what this reviewer valued in the performance: a restrained, layered portrayal rather than a showy one. The word “haunted” in the headline points to the same quality, a man whose fear is visible in small reactions rather than in outbursts.

Where the reviews agree and differ
The three reviews cited here do not make the same argument. They emphasise different parts of the film, and a reader who wants to judge the picture should keep those differences in view.
| Review | Performance | Tension and pacing | Social critique | Third act | Rating |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| The Times of India (Anna Mathews) | Praised for nuance in Mammootty’s Kuttan | Tension praised in the same review | Not summarised in the cited coverage | Not summarised in the cited coverage | 3.5/5, published May 12, 2022 |
| The Indian Express | Not summarised in the cited coverage | Not summarised in the cited coverage | Reads the film as a caste critique and examines Kuttan’s egoism | Not summarised in the cited coverage | Not stated in the cited coverage |
| Cinema Express | Assessed in the review; its verdict is not summarised here | Not summarised in the cited coverage | Not summarised in the cited coverage | Reservations about the third act | Not stated in the cited coverage |
Read together, the reviews split the film into three concerns: the performance at its centre, the social and character reading beneath the thriller, and whether the story’s final stretch pays off what came before. Cinema Express praises the film’s creators but is cautious about the third act, which means it is not a blanket endorsement.

The social layer: caste and ego
The Indian Express treats Puzhu as more than a suspense story. Its reading, which the reviewer presents as an interpretation, focuses on the film’s critique of caste and on Kuttan’s egoism. Those themes are what make the father’s paranoia feel rooted in a social world rather than only in the plot. A viewer who watches for the thriller alone may read Kuttan’s suspicions as simply genre machinery; the caste and ego reading asks whether his fear is also a product of his own position and pride.
