Paul Rodgers says doctors warned him that he might not survive the operation he underwent after his second major stroke. But the CBS News and Goldmine interviews documenting his account do not confirm that doctors gave him precisely a 50–50 chance of survival. The surgery was an endarterectomy to clear a blocked carotid artery, and Rodgers says he returned to singing and guitar after six months.
What operation did Paul Rodgers have?
Rodgers underwent an endarterectomy after his second major stroke, in October 2019, according to a CBS News report published September 27, 2023. The procedure removes plaque from a carotid artery, one of the blood vessels that carries blood to the brain. CBS reported that the operation also posed a considerable risk to Rodgers’s vocal cords—an especially serious prospect for a singer. CBS News
In a separate Goldmine interview, Rodgers’s wife, Cynthia, said his left carotid artery was 95% blocked. That figure is her statement in the interview, not an independently presented clinical record. Goldmine
What did doctors tell him about the risk?
Rodgers recalled doctors telling him, “You may not come out of this alive.” He answered, “Oh, well, that’s a plus, isn’t it?” CBS also quoted his recollection of waking after the operation: “And when I woke up, I opened my eyes, I thought, ‘Oh, I’m still here,’” CBS News

In the Goldmine interview, Rodgers described a similar warning from his surgeon: “I have to tell you, you may not come back from this, that’s one of the things you have to deal with.” He said he chose to proceed because not having the operation did not offer a good prognosis, while surgery at least offered a chance. Was Rodgers given a 50–50 chance of survival?
The two direct interview accounts establish that Rodgers remembers being warned he might die; neither assigns a numeric survival probability. On the available reporting, the precise 50–50 figure is therefore unconfirmed by CBS and Goldmine. A warning of grave risk is not the same as a documented estimate of equal odds.

The reported figures about Rodgers’s health are also specific to these accounts: CBS says he had 11 minor strokes and two major strokes, with the first major stroke in 2016 and the second in October 2019. Those are reported personal-history details, not statistics that predict another patient’s outcome. The interviews do not provide an independent medical assessment of Rodgers’s individual operative risk.
How did Rodgers recover?
CBS reported that Rodgers returned to playing guitar and singing after six months. He later returned to a studio in Vancouver to record his solo album Midnight Rose. His official site likewise said the health scares left him unable to sing or play guitar for six months. Paul Rodgers’s official site

Rodgers framed his decision to speak publicly about the experience as a message of hope. In the Goldmine interview, he said he wanted people to know “there is hope, even though you might have had a stroke.” That is his personal reflection, not medical advice or a general prediction of recovery.
