Paramount+ is worth paying for when its particular mix of CBS, Star Trek, Paramount movies, Nickelodeon, SHOWTIME and selected live sports matches what you watch. It is less convincing as an always-on, all-purpose streaming service: its catalog is more focused than Netflix or Prime Video, and some of its best value is tied to a show, franchise or sports season. In the U.S., Essential is the sensible starting point at $8.99 a month; Premium costs $13.99 and makes sense mainly for SHOWTIME, local live CBS, downloads or fewer ads on most on-demand viewing.

Paramount+ plans and prices
Paramount+ currently lists two U.S. plans. The table summarizes the practical differences; sports, local CBS availability, and supported video features can vary. Check the current plan details before subscribing, especially if you are buying for a particular event or feature.

Both plans support up to six profiles and three simultaneous streams. Profiles help organize viewing; they do not mean unlimited simultaneous use. Taxes may apply, and offers or billing through an app store or another platform can differ from direct signup.

Annual billing saves $17.89 on Essential compared with twelve monthly payments ($107.88), and $27.89 on Premium compared with twelve monthly payments ($167.88). That works out to about $7.50 and $11.67 per month, respectively, but only if you keep the subscription for the year. If you expect to watch for a month or two, monthly billing is the lower-commitment choice.
What is Paramount+?
Paramount+ is a subscription streaming service centered on programming associated with Paramount and related brands, including CBS, SHOWTIME, Nickelodeon, MTV and Comedy Central. Its mix includes on-demand series and films, some live channels, news and sports. Brand ownership does not guarantee that every show or movie from a brand is on the service: rights and catalog availability change by title, market and time.
What can you watch?
The service is easiest to assess by asking which of its programming groups you will actually use:

- Star Trek and other Paramount franchises: A substantial draw for science-fiction and franchise fans, alongside Paramount Pictures titles. The movie selection rotates, so look up a specific film before subscribing.
- SHOWTIME: The full SHOWTIME offering is a Premium benefit. Essential includes selected SHOWTIME series, not the full Premium package.
- CBS: Paramount+ carries CBS programming, and Premium includes a local live CBS station where available. Essential does not include that local station.
- Kids and family viewing: Nickelodeon programming gives the service a useful family component.
- Comedy and reality libraries: MTV and Comedy Central content add catalog viewing beyond the headline franchises.
- Films and older titles: Reviews have noted a worthwhile selection of classic films, but the precise library changes.
Paramount+ advertises more than 40,000 episodes and movies. That is a combined count, not 40,000 movies, exclusive titles or must-watch originals. The useful question is whether the service has enough of your shows and films. Its catalog can be compelling without matching the breadth of Netflix or Prime Video. If one specific title is the reason you would subscribe, verify that it is currently available rather than relying on a brand or library-size claim. Live sports: useful, but not a full sports package
Paramount+ can be a useful sports supplement, particularly for viewers following NFL games shown on CBS and UEFA Champions League coverage. The service also carries other CBS sports programming and selected live events. Which events are available depends on the current rights, the specific event, the plan and sometimes the viewer’s market. Do not interpret a league or sport appearing in the service’s promotion as a promise that every game, local broadcast, replay or full-game archive is included.
Essential includes selected live sports, while Premium adds access to local live CBS where available and more live events. The plan distinction matters if the event you want is tied to your local CBS station. Check the event listing and plan terms before the season or match you care about; live broadcasts, including sports, still have normal commercial breaks even on Premium. Replay availability may not match live-event availability, so confirm that too if you cannot watch at the scheduled time. Paramount+ is not a replacement for a complete cable or live-TV package.
Ads, downloads and picture quality
Premium is only mostly ad-free
Premium removes ads from most on-demand shows and movies, not from everything. Live television and live sports include broadcast advertising, and promotional trailers or sponsorship messages may still appear. If your reason for upgrading is to eliminate every interruption, Premium will not deliver that.

Downloads are temporary
Premium supports downloads on compatible devices, useful for a flight, commute or unreliable connection. Downloads are not permanent ownership: Paramount’s support information says they expire at the earlier of 30 days after download or 48 hours after playback begins. Title restrictions also apply. 4K and HDR are selective
Premium includes select titles in 4K UHD, Dolby Vision or HDR10. You need a compatible title, display, streaming device and internet connection; the entire catalog is not available in these formats. Do not pay for Premium solely on the assumption that every movie will look better.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Distinctive franchises: Star Trek, Paramount films, CBS, Nickelodeon, SHOWTIME and other familiar brands give the service a clear identity.
- Selected sports at the lower tier: Essential can make sense for a viewer who wants specific CBS-carried events and accepts ads, subject to event and market restrictions.
- Premium combines several useful extras: Full SHOWTIME, local CBS where available, downloads and select enhanced video quality can make the higher tier worthwhile for the right household.
- Family appeal: Nickelodeon adds a practical reason for some households to keep the service alongside its adult-oriented catalog.
- Annual savings for committed users: The annual plans cost less than twelve months paid individually, provided you will use the service for most of the year.
Cons
- More focused than broad: Its library is not as deep an all-purpose destination as the largest services; much of its value depends on whether you want its particular brands and titles.
- Premium is not fully commercial-free: Live channels and sports remain ad-supported, and promotional material can appear.
- Essential lacks local live CBS: People hoping to stream their local CBS station need Premium where available, or another way to receive that station.
- Sports coverage is fragmented: A service carrying some games or events does not necessarily carry every game, replay or local feed a fan expects.
- Features have limits: Downloads expire, and 4K/HDR applies only to selected titles and compatible setups.
- Value can be seasonal: If you only want one series or a particular run of matches, a year-round subscription may be unnecessary.
Which plan should you choose?
Choose Essential if you mainly want Paramount’s on-demand catalog, Star Trek, selected CBS sports or family programming, and do not mind ads. It is also the best low-cost way to try the service. It does not provide a local live CBS station.
Choose Premium if you specifically want the full SHOWTIME offering, need local live CBS where available, travel and use downloads, or care about select 4K/HDR titles. Its higher price is harder to justify if the only benefit you want is “more movies” or a completely ad-free experience: live content still has commercials.
Pay monthly and rotate if your interest is one show, a sports season or a new release. Subscribe when there is enough to watch, then cancel when you are done; this avoids paying for quiet months. A free trial should not be assumed to be available—the offer is promotional and can change.
Pay annually if you already know the catalog suits your household and expect to watch for most of the year. The headline discount is real at the listed prices, but it is not a saving if you would otherwise subscribe only for a short stretch.
Is Paramount+ worth it for you?
- Star Trek or Paramount-franchise fan: Usually worth trying. Start with Essential unless you also want SHOWTIME, downloads or another Premium feature.
- SHOWTIME viewer: Premium is the relevant plan. Compare what you will actually watch against the extra $5 a month over Essential.
- CBS viewer: Premium may be valuable if your local station is available in your area. Essential is not a substitute for local live CBS.
- Sports fan: Worth considering for specific eligible NFL-on-CBS or soccer coverage, but verify the event, market, tier and replay situation first. It is not a complete sports package.
- Family with children: Nickelodeon can improve the value, especially if adults also watch the broader catalog.
- Occasional viewer or subscription rotator: A month or two may be better value than annual billing.
- One-service household wanting the broadest library: Probably not the strongest sole subscription. Paramount+ is more convincing as a focused complement than as a universal replacement for other entertainment services.
How it compares with alternatives
Choose based on the programming you want, not just the monthly price; tiers, ads and included features differ.
- Peacock: A better match for NBC and Bravo programming and Peacock’s own sports offering. Paramount+ is the more natural pick for Star Trek, Paramount films, CBS and SHOWTIME. See NBC News’ comparison for a broader service overview.
- Netflix: Generally stronger if you want a broad general-entertainment library and a steady slate of widely marketed originals. Paramount+ makes more sense when its specific franchises or sports coverage are your priority.
- Max: A closer fit for HBO and Warner Bros. programming and viewers focused on prestige television. Paramount+ is better aligned with CBS, Star Trek, Nickelodeon, Paramount films and selected sports.
- Prime Video: A broad service with an ecosystem of add-on channels; useful if you already use Prime Video, but its add-ons are not automatically equivalent to a direct Paramount+ subscription. Compare current channel pricing, billing and included features before choosing how to subscribe.
Competitor prices and plan names change, so compare like with like at the time you sign up. A cheaper ad-supported tier is not a direct comparison with a mostly ad-free plan, and subscription prices may vary by billing market and platform.

Paramount+ earns its place when you can name the shows, franchises, CBS programming or sports you will watch. Essential is the default recommendation for most interested viewers; Premium is a targeted upgrade for SHOWTIME, local live CBS, downloads and mostly ad-free on-demand viewing. If the service is only appealing for a short stretch, subscribe monthly and rotate rather than paying for a year you may not use.
