Pappy Boyington Before VMF-214: His Troubled Flying Tigers Tour

Before he became the Marine Corps commander remembered as “Pappy” of the Black Sheep, Gregory Boyington spent roughly five months flying Curtiss P-40s with the American Volunteer Group (AVG), the volunteer unit popularly known as the Flying Tigers. The tour began after he left his Marine commission in 1941 and ended with his resignation from the AVG on April 2, 1942. It included combat over Rangoon, disputed victory claims, navigation and leadership mistakes, damaged or lost aircraft, and strained relationships inside the group.

That episode should not be merged with the very different record he built after returning to the Marines. The AVG account describes two confirmed Rangoon victories and a later Chiang Mai claim reduced to one and a half credited aircraft, while the official Naval History and Heritage Command biography summarizes his AVG tally as six and separately records 26 Japanese aircraft seen shot down before his 1944 disappearance, later raised to 28 after two additional victories were credited. Those figures count different periods and use different accounting systems.

What Boyington did before the Black Sheep

Boyington’s pre-VMF-214 story starts with a career under pressure. HistoryNet’s 2020 feature portrays him as a Marine officer in difficulty when he accepted an AVG position. He had left the Marine Corps, and the article quotes his explanation of his finances as “a fatal gap between his income and accounts payable.” Joining the AVG offered a way to fly in China and Burma while earning money outside his former service.

The AVG was organized from American volunteers serving under Chinese authority before the United States formally entered the war. Its three pursuit squadrons flew Curtiss P-40 fighters against Japanese forces. Boyington joined the 1st Pursuit Squadron, nicknamed the “Adam and Eves.” He was not yet the commander of a famous Marine squadron; he was one pilot in a unit whose combat reputation was still being made.

His AVG service lasted only a short time. He first flew combat over Rangoon in January 1942, participated in operations in Burma and China, and resigned on April 2. He returned to the United States and rejoined the Marine Corps later in 1942. The Black Sheep chapter came afterward, in the South Pacific, with a different aircraft, a different organization and a different set of records.

The Rangoon missions and the first victory claims

Two victories described as confirmed

In its account of Boyington’s first combat over Rangoon, HistoryNet identifies two Japanese fighters as confirmed victories. That is the clearest figure for the early AVG action in the feature. It does not establish that every aircraft Boyington later said he destroyed during the tour was confirmed in the same way.

Boyington’s own later descriptions included additional claims, but the HistoryNet account says those claims lack clear dates or matching records in the material it examined. That distinction matters: a pilot’s combat claim, a unit claims-board credit and a later biographical total are not interchangeable categories.

Life away from the main action

Boyington also expressed frustration with assignments that kept him from what he regarded as the decisive fighting. HistoryNet quotes him recalling that “Our Adam and Eves might just as well have been back in the United States blowing bubbles in the bathtub.” The line captures his dissatisfaction, but it is a recollection reported by a secondary historical feature, not an independently verified diary entry or flight-log notation.

The Chiang Kai-shek escort that went wrong

What the HistoryNet reconstruction describes

The most revealing episode in the account is a March 1942 escort mission for Chiang Kai-shek’s transport. Boyington led the P-40s beyond the planned turn point. Once the formation had gone too far, the pilots struggled to navigate back toward base while their fuel reserves fell.

The group eventually made emergency landings. Aircraft were damaged, and returning to base became a difficult, improvised operation rather than a clean escort. The episode illustrates the practical consequences of navigation, fuel-management and formation-leadership decisions in a theater where maps, weather and landmarks could be unreliable.

HistoryNet presents this as a reconstruction based on named recollections. It is useful evidence of how the mission was remembered, but it should not be described as a newly audited finding from original AVG flight logs. The incident is one reason the AVG portion of Boyington’s career is often characterized as troubled rather than simply heroic.

Why the mission matters to his reputation

The escort did not make Boyington uniquely incompetent; wartime aviation routinely produced navigational errors and forced landings. It does, however, complicate the later image of an infallible fighter leader. The same pilot who would eventually organize and inspire VMF-214 also made decisions in Burma that exposed his formation to fuel exhaustion and aircraft damage.

Chiang Mai, Loiwing and the end of the AVG tour

A claim reduced by the AVG board

HistoryNet recounts that Boyington claimed seven aircraft destroyed during a March raid on Chiang Mai. The AVG claims board later reduced that figure to one and a half credited aircraft. “Seven” therefore represents his claim in that account, while “one and a half” represents the board’s subsequent credit. Neither number should be presented as a universal lifetime total.

Additional trouble at Loiwing

The feature also describes trouble at Loiwing, including a takeoff crash. Combined with the escort incident, the crash reports and the uncertain claims made the AVG period a record of operational friction as well as combat. The evidence does not require a sweeping judgment about Boyington’s character; it shows a pilot operating under pressure whose decisions and relationships did not always fit the heroic image created later.

Resignation on April 2, 1942

Boyington resigned from the AVG on April 2, 1942. This date marks the cleanest boundary between the Flying Tigers episode and his return to Marine service. He did not leave the AVG as the commander of a legendary squadron. He left a short volunteer tour whose combat achievements and failures were already being interpreted in different ways.

How many aircraft did Boyington shoot down with the Flying Tigers?

There is no single uncontested number that answers every version of this question. The figures below come from different sources and count different things.

Figure Source and period What it represents
Two Bob Bergin, HistoryNet/Aviation History, 2020; Rangoon combat Victories described as confirmed in the feature’s account
Seven claimed, one and a half credited HistoryNet feature; March raid on Chiang Mai Boyington’s claim compared with the AVG claims board’s later credit
Six Naval History and Heritage Command biography; AVG service Official biographical summary of his AVG tally, using its own accounting convention
26 before disappearance, later 28 Naval History and Heritage Command biography; later Marine combat Aircraft seen shot down before January 3, 1944, then a total increased by two after his release from captivity

The safest answer to “How many did he shoot down with the Flying Tigers?” is therefore source-specific: HistoryNet describes two confirmed Rangoon victories and one and a half credited from the Chiang Mai claim, while the official Navy biography gives an AVG total of six. The later 26 and 28 figures belong to Boyington’s South Pacific Marine career, not solely to the Flying Tigers.

What changed when he returned to the Marines

From P-40s to Corsairs

The aircraft itself helps keep the chronology straight. The AVG story concerns the Curtiss P-40, including the P-40B Tomahawk associated with the Flying Tigers. Boyington’s later VMF-214 operations involved the F4U Corsair. A P-40 victory attributed to the AVG period should not be silently added to a Corsair-era total, and a later Marine credit should not be backdated to Burma.

Formation of VMF-214

After returning to Marine service, Boyington eventually took command of VMF-214 in the South Pacific. Marine Corps unit history explains that the squadron was formed from unassigned and replacement pilots rather than from a long-established roster. That unusual formation contributed to the “Black Sheep” identity. The squadron’s nickname and its combat record belong to this later chapter, not to the 1941–42 AVG tour.

The 1944 disappearance and captivity

The Naval History and Heritage Command biography records that Boyington was shot down over Rabaul on January 3, 1944. He was captured and held for 20 months. The same biography distinguishes 26 aircraft seen shot down before his disappearance from a later total of 28, after two more victories were credited following his release. It also records his Medal of Honor presentation in October 1945, citing “for extraordinary heroism above and beyond the call of duty.”

Those later honors explain why public memory often compresses his entire career into one uninterrupted legend. The chronology does not support that compression. His AVG service ended in resignation; his best-known command came after he rejoined the Marines; and the official victory totals include post-capture accounting that cannot be assigned to the Flying Tigers.

Was Pappy Boyington a Flying Tiger?

Yes. Boyington served with the American Volunteer Group, the unit remembered as the Flying Tigers, in 1941 and early 1942. He flew P-40s with the 1st Pursuit Squadron and saw combat over Rangoon. Calling him a Flying Tiger is historically accurate.

It is also incomplete if it is meant to describe his whole career. He was an AVG pilot for about five months, resigned on April 2, 1942, and later became a Marine squadron commander. “Flying Tiger” identifies one phase; “Black Sheep” identifies the VMF-214 phase that followed his return to the Corps.

How to read the “unhappy” label fairly

“Unhappy” describes the tone of the AVG episode more convincingly than it defines Boyington as a person. The available account includes financial strain, difficult relationships, frustration with assignments, questionable operational judgment, aircraft losses and disputed claims. Those facts justify describing the tour as troubled.

They do not prove that every negative story about him is true, nor do they erase his later leadership. The evidence is a mixture of a detailed secondary narrative, an official biographical summary and unit histories. The HistoryNet feature’s recollections and reconstructions should remain attributed to that source, while the Navy’s figures should remain tied to its biography rather than blended into a single manufactured score.

Further reading for the complete chronology

Boyington’s autobiography, Baa Baa Black Sheep, is identified in a U.S. Marine Corps bibliography as an account of his Marine fighter-squadron service and his time as a prisoner of war; Naval History and Heritage Command also refers to a paperback edition. Bruce Gamble’s Black Sheep One: The Life of Gregory “Pappy” Boyington is another substantial biography. A Marine Corps historical publication describes Gamble’s The Black Sheep and Black Sheep One as comprehensive treatments.

These books can add personal perspective and broader context, but they should not be used to erase the distinctions among claims, confirmed victories and later official credits. The clearest understanding comes from keeping the dates, aircraft and accounting systems visible at every step.
