During a January 2026 appearance on The View, Pam Grier recalled her mother pulling the children away from someone hanging from a tree. Grier said the memory still affects her. The account is her recollection; the available historical record raises a timeline question but does not identify the event she described.
What Pam Grier recalled on The View
TheGrio reported that Grier recounted her mother warning the children not to look and pulling them away after they saw someone hanging from a tree. Grier described the memory as affecting her in the present, saying: “It triggers me, today, to see that a voice can be silenced.” TheGrio’s account places the exchange in a conversation about Grier’s childhood and her family’s life in Columbus, Ohio.

TheGrio also reported that Grier said her father was in the military and that Black families were not permitted to live on base. Those details are context for the conversation, not evidence that establishes the exact place or date of the incident she recalled.
What the Ohio memorial records
America’s Black Holocaust Museum’s Ohio Lynching Victims Memorial lists an unnamed victim in Cleveland on June 27, 1911, as its latest dated Ohio entry. The page also lists an unnamed victim in Millersburg on April 1, 1892. These are entries on the memorial, not a complete account of every possible event or everything Grier may have witnessed.

Why the chronology raises a question
TheGrio reports that Grier was born in 1949. If her recollection is understood as a childhood sighting of a lynching in Ohio, the timeline does not align with the memorial’s latest dated entry: the Cleveland event listed there occurred decades before her birth. That is a discrepancy between an attributed personal recollection and the dated record on the memorial page—not proof that Grier’s memory is false.
The reported quotation says, “they have a memorial for it now,” but the available coverage does not establish that Grier meant the Ohio memorial consulted here. Neither the news account nor the memorial identifies the victim, the exact site, or the date of the event she described. The memorial records listed victims and dates; it cannot, by itself, determine what Grier saw or which memorial she had in mind.
