Owen Hart died after falling during a planned entrance at the WWF’s Over the Edge event in Kansas City on May 23, 1999. He was performing as the Blue Blazer and was being lowered toward the ring from the arena ceiling. Contemporary reports described the fall and the ensuing emergency response, but they disagreed about its height and did not establish a definitive mechanical cause.

What happened to Owen Hart at Over the Edge?

Hart was scheduled to descend from the arena ceiling into the ring as the Blue Blazer. The Associated Press reported that he fell into the ring, struck a turnbuckle, received CPR and was taken to a hospital. The report said the reason for the fall was not immediately clear. Hart died that night.

The arena audience saw the fall, but the pay-per-view audience did not, according to The Washington Post’s May 25, 1999 report. The event was stopped after his death.

How high was the fall, and what caused it?

Early accounts gave conflicting estimates of the height. The Los Angeles Times archive carried an Associated Press report estimating 50 feet; The Washington Post reported 90 feet; and ABC News later gave 78 feet. These are press-reported figures, not a single verified measurement: the available accounts do not establish one definitive height.

Reported height Source and context
50 feet Associated Press report carried by the Los Angeles Times in 1999; one contemporary estimate, not a consensus. Los Angeles Times archive
90 feet The Washington Post’s May 25, 1999 report; another contemporary estimate. The Washington Post
78 feet ABC News’ 2000 report; a later press figure, not established here as an official measurement. ABC News

Contemporary reporting described an investigation of the equipment, but it did not settle the exact mechanism. The Washington Post reported that homicide detectives were examining the rigging and that police spokesman Floyd Mitchell said the cable had not broken. The paper said investigators believed something had gone wrong in connecting the harness to the cable. That was an account of the investigation at the time, not a definitive finding.

The same article attributed a different possibility to WWF president Vince McMahon: he said Hart may have accidentally pulled a release mechanism. That was McMahon’s speculation, not an established conclusion. The reviewed sources do not provide a verified final mechanical determination.

What did the family lawsuit and settlement establish?

Martha Hart, the couple’s children and Owen’s parents brought a wrongful-death lawsuit, according to ABC News. The suit alleged that the stunt was dangerous and poorly planned and that the harness equipment was defective. Those were allegations in the lawsuit, not findings set out in the cited reports.

The parties settled. WWE’s November 2, 2000 announcement confirmed a settlement with the family and said the company recorded a $7 million charge net of insurance recoveries. WWE also said it retained the right to seek contribution and indemnity from equipment manufacturers and sellers. The $7 million was the company’s accounting charge after insurance recoveries; the announcement did not identify it as the settlement’s gross amount. WWE’s announcement

ABC News reported that the settlement terms had not been disclosed and attributed an $18 million figure to an unnamed source close to the case. That amount should be treated as a press-attributed report, not a confirmed settlement term.

How did Owen Hart’s family carry his legacy forward?

For Martha Hart, remembrance became a commitment to helping others. The Owen Hart Foundation’s About Us page says she established the organization in December 2000 in his memory. She explains: “I believed that if I could help others in Owen’s name, it would give meaning to his death – to me that meant he did not die in vain.”

That family-led memorial gives Hart’s legacy a life beyond the unresolved questions and legal aftermath of his death: the Foundation is the work Martha says she created to honor him and help people in his name.
