Old Ian is gravely sick, and Claire’s modern medical knowledge cannot save him. As the Murrays confront that loss, Jamie settles unfinished business with Laoghaire, Claire tells the family where she comes from, and a call for medical help sends her back to America.
What happens in “Unfinished Business”?
“Unfinished Business” is “Outlander” Season 7, episode 9 and the premiere of the season’s second half. It originally aired on November 22, 2024. STARZ lists the episode as one hour long, TV-MA, and written by Barbara Stepansky. STARZ’s episode listing provides the official synopsis and metadata; Rotten Tomatoes’ episode page lists the air date.
The premiere is less a rapid return to the Revolutionary War plot than a family reckoning at Lallybroch. Jamie, Claire, and Young Ian come home to the Murrays, where Old Ian’s declining health forces everyone to face what cannot be repaired. Alongside that grief, Jamie tries to resolve his history with Laoghaire, while Claire’s departure sets the story on its way back across the Atlantic.
Why is Old Ian’s illness the emotional center?
Young Ian’s return reunites him with his parents and siblings, but the homecoming is shadowed by his father’s worsening cough. Claire recognizes the illness as consumption and tells the family she cannot cure him. Her medical training gives her a name for what is happening, not a way to stop it.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
That limit becomes especially painful when Jamie and Claire explain that Claire was born in the twentieth century and knows things about the future. Jenny has to reckon with the unsettling idea that Claire can know what lies ahead yet still be unable to prevent her husband’s death. Claire’s foreknowledge is not a guarantee of control, and the episode makes that distinction personal rather than abstract.
What does Young Ian’s father tell him about Rachel?
Young Ian tells Old Ian that he loves Rachel. His father urges him to return to America before the opportunity to build a life with her passes. The advice gives the homecoming an outward pull: even as Young Ian reconnects with his family in Scotland, the future he wants is tied to the life he left behind.

How does Jamie resolve things with Laoghaire?
Jamie visits Laoghaire to apologize, but the conversation quickly reopens their painful history. She challenges him over his feelings for Claire and attacks him. When her farmhand is injured, however, Laoghaire’s attention turns to caring for him; as she puts it, “He needs me.”
Jamie later changes their old arrangement so Laoghaire can keep her home and marry the farmhand. It is a practical resolution, not a restoration of their marriage: he acknowledges an obligation and gives her a path forward without pretending their past has disappeared.

What does Claire reveal, and why does she leave for America?
Jamie and Claire decide to tell his family that Claire comes from the twentieth century. She says, “I was born in 1918,” and makes clear that her knowledge of the future has limits. The revelation helps explain her unusual perspective, but it does not offer Jenny or the rest of the family a way to change Old Ian’s fate.
Claire then learns that Henry Grey needs medical help and leaves Scotland for America. That departure separates her from Jamie as the season turns back toward the colonies and the Revolutionary War. The Associated Press’s Season 7B coverage describes the second half’s movement from Scotland toward America and the rebel cause.

What is happening with Roger and Buck?
In the past, Roger and Buck continue searching for Jemmy. Their story runs parallel to the Lallybroch events rather than resolving alongside Claire’s departure. STARZ’s official episode synopsis confirms the search as part of the premiere’s plot.
Where can you watch or own Season 7?
Availability depends on territory and date. Rotten Tomatoes lists STARZ streaming and Fandango purchase options for the episode, but those listings may change. Sony’s official Season 7 page says the season is available on Blu-ray and DVD; that is a season set, not a disc identified as containing this episode alone.

For a related reading option, Diana Gabaldon’s official site identifies An Echo in the Bone as the seventh Outlander novel. That makes it a series companion, but the available episode information does not establish that “Unfinished Business” directly adapts a particular passage from that book. See Gabaldon’s page for the novel.
