The standalone app arrived in November 2025, after Sora 2 was announced on September 30. OpenAI discontinued the Sora website and consumer apps on April 26, 2026. As of August 18, 2026, there is no official Sora Android app experience to download or use; OpenAI’s Sora API is scheduled to end on September 24, 2026.
What actually arrived on Android
Sora for Android was a standalone Google Play app, not a video feature added to the ChatGPT Android application. OpenAI said it launched globally in November 2025, although contemporaneous reporting identified an initial rollout covering the United States, Canada, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand and Vietnam. Access could still depend on account, country, age, invitation or subscription rules as OpenAI expanded the service.
OpenAI’s engineering account says the team moved from prototype to public release in roughly 28 days, from October 8 to November 5, 2025. The company reported that the app reached number one on Google Play and that Android users generated more than one million videos in its first 24 hours. Those are OpenAI-reported launch figures, not independent measures of retention or long-term success. See OpenAI’s Android launch account.
The Android app was one product surface for the Sora 2 model, alongside the iOS app and sora.com. It was not a permanent guarantee that every Sora feature would be available in every country or subscription tier.

What Sora 2 could do
Sora 2 combined video generation with synchronized sound. Users could start from a text prompt or an image, generate dialogue, music and sound effects, remix or extend existing creations, and choose vertical, square or widescreen compositions. A social discovery feed encouraged people to publish, respond to and transform clips.
Characters and “Cameos”
The service also offered character features that let a user appear in generated scenes using an authorized likeness and voice. OpenAI described these controls as consent-based. That addressed one product pathway for participation; it did not establish that every person depicted in a Sora video had consented, nor did it prevent impersonation outside the feature.
Historical output limits
OpenAI’s earlier product page listed up to 1080p and 20 seconds for Pro users, and up to 720p and 10 seconds for Plus users. Those were historical plan details and should not be treated as current app capabilities after the consumer shutdown. OpenAI’s launch material called Sora 2 more physically accurate and controllable than its predecessor, while acknowledging that it remained imperfect. Claims such as “the GPT-3.5 moment for video” were OpenAI’s positioning, not an independent benchmark.

Why the Android release mattered
Android put a high-profile audiovisual generator in front of a much larger mobile audience than an iOS-only launch. The combination of one-tap creation, a social feed and automatic audio made experimentation easy for people who would not install a desktop production tool. It also made the unresolved questions about ownership, consent and verification harder to contain: a generated clip could be made, remixed and reposted within minutes.

OpenAI’s shutdown notice says users can export their creations through its export workflow and warns that Sora-associated data may be permanently deleted after the export period. Installing an old APK is not an official or supported way to restore the service. Be especially cautious of third-party listings using the Sora name.

- Training: whether copyrighted films, images, music or other works were used to train models without permission.
- Generation: whether a particular output unlawfully reproduced protected expression.
- User uploads: whether a person had the right to upload an image, video, voice or character.
- Distribution: whether publishing or monetizing an output infringed copyright, trademark, publicity or contractual rights.
- Platform responsibility: whether OpenAI should proactively block protected characters and styles or respond after rights holders complained.
OpenAI’s original Sora launch materials described blocks for particularly harmful categories, watermarks and C2PA metadata, and limits on uploads of people while safeguards were refined. Those measures did not decide any underlying liability question.
Characters, brands and the Cameo dispute
Users and rights holders raised concerns about recognizable fictional characters, celebrity likenesses, deceased public figures and entertainment brands. Cameo filed a lawsuit against OpenAI over the “Cameo” name. The complaint contains allegations and is not a finding that OpenAI was liable.
A different model appeared in OpenAI’s announced Disney arrangement. OpenAI said the proposed three-year agreement covered more than 200 Disney, Marvel, Pixar and Star Wars characters while excluding talent likenesses and voices. The Disney announcement said the transaction remained subject to definitive agreements, approvals and closing conditions. Negotiated licenses for specified properties do not settle broader questions about training data or user-generated uploads.

Why realistic video raised deepfake and consent concerns
Sora 2’s video-and-audio combination lowered the effort needed to make convincing false footage. The risks included fabricated news or political scenes, sexual deepfakes, impersonation scams, fake evidence, harassment and unauthorized videos of children. A realistic voice can be as consequential as a realistic face.
OpenAI said people appearing in uploaded images required the uploader to attest that they had consent and the necessary rights. It also described controls intended to keep character creation consent-based. These systems rely partly on user statements, automated moderation, enforcement and reports from affected people; they are not a universal consent guarantee.

OpenAI said Sora outputs carried visible watermarks, invisible provenance signals and C2PA metadata. It also described internal reverse-image and audio-search tools for investigating suspected generations. Together, these features can provide useful evidence of origin, but they do not authenticate the truth of what a video depicts.

OpenAI’s responsible-launch description and real-person safety guidance present these measures as risk reductions, not perfect protection. The absence of a detectable watermark does not prove that footage is real.
Moderation, evasion and governance
The Sora 2 system card describes multimodal moderation of prompts, video frames, audio transcripts, comments and scene descriptions, with heightened safeguards for minors and real-person imagery. Academic work on AI-video communities has reported discussions of moderation opacity and attempts to evade restrictions through misspellings, alternate wording, emojis and other languages. The preprint User Negotiations of Authenticity, Ownership, and Governance on AI-Generated Video Platforms offers context about those discussions; it should not be generalized into a claim about every Sora user.
What the shutdown means for users and creators
The shutdown turns Sora from a live consumer product into a case study in platform dependency. Anyone who used the app should export important videos, preserve original files and keep any available provenance records before OpenAI’s deletion window closes. A workflow built around a proprietary feed, remix history or character library may not transfer cleanly to another service.
The API was a separate developer surface, with a stated end date of September 24, 2026. OpenAI’s documentation listed Sora 2 at $0.10 per second for the documented 720×1280 portrait or 1280×720 landscape formats. Sora 2 Pro was listed at $0.30, $0.50 or $0.70 per second depending on resolution. These prices were documented on August 18, 2026, and the scheduled sunset makes them unsuitable as a promise of long-term vendor continuity. How to evaluate a replacement video tool
- Check commercial-use rights for both inputs and outputs.
- Read whether uploads are retained or used for training.
- Look for explicit likeness and voice-consent controls.
- Understand watermark and provenance behavior after export.
- Compare resolution, duration, audio, editing and shot-continuity limits.
- Calculate generation cost per second, including retries.
- Review moderation, appeals and rights-holder takedown procedures.
- Assess API stability, export tools and published end-of-life policies.
- For professional work, ask whether enterprise indemnity or contractual protections exist.
Runway (runwayml.com), Adobe Firefly (firefly.adobe.com), Google Gemini/Veo (gemini.google.com) and Kling AI (klingai.com) are candidates for comparison, not tested or ranked recommendations here. Their current access, pricing and licensing should be checked directly before committing a production workflow.
Practical checks for journalists and fact-checkers
- Preserve the original file rather than relying on a repost.
- Record the source account, URL and publication timestamp.
- Capture visible watermarks and the surrounding post.
- Retain metadata and any available C2PA provenance record.
- Treat a missing provenance record as inconclusive: it proves neither authenticity nor Sora origin.
The Bottom Line
Sora’s Android arrival expanded access to sophisticated video-and-audio generation in November 2025, but it also exposed unresolved copyright, likeness, deepfake and provenance problems. The consumer app and website ended on April 26, 2026, so the useful lesson now is not how to download Sora, but how to preserve old creations, scrutinize synthetic footage and avoid building a critical workflow on a service with a published shutdown date.
