One of Them Days is not a documentary. It is a 2025 American, R-rated buddy comedy about two best friends and roommates racing to replace their missing rent money before they are evicted. Keke Palmer plays Dreux and SZA plays Alyssa, whose relationship is tested when Alyssa’s boyfriend spends or takes the rent money.
Directed by Lawrence Lamont and written by Syreeta Singleton, the film is built around a single increasingly chaotic day. Its main appeal is the comic chemistry between Palmer and SZA, while its broad, episodic set pieces will work best for viewers who enjoy energetic, sometimes outrageous comedy more than tightly realistic plotting.
What is One of Them Days about?
Dreux and Alyssa share a home and depend on each other, but their stability disappears when they discover that the money reserved for rent is gone. With eviction approaching, the friends move through a series of increasingly desperate attempts to raise the missing cash.

The premise remains straightforward and largely spoiler-free: two roommates have a hard financial deadline, limited options, and a friendship that may not survive the pressure. Alyssa’s boyfriend is at the center of the immediate crisis, but the story is also about boundaries, dependence, ambition, and the strain that financial insecurity places on close relationships.
The film uses the rent emergency as a comic engine. Each attempted solution creates another obstacle, allowing the story to move from everyday roommate conflict into broad physical and situational comedy. Beneath the escalation is a recognizable concern: when housing is at risk, even an ordinary day can become a series of impossible choices.
Cast and credits
| Role | Person |
|---|---|
| Dreux | Keke Palmer |
| Alyssa | SZA |
| Director | Lawrence Lamont |
| Writer | Syreeta Singleton |
| Additional cast named in the official trailer | Maude Apatow, Lil Rel Howery, Janelle James, and Katt Williams |
The producers named in the official promotional material are Issa Rae, Deniese Davis, Sara Rastogi, James Lopez, and Poppy Hanks. Keke Palmer is also credited as an executive producer. The Issa Rae production connection and the pairing of Palmer with SZA give the film a clear identity as a contemporary, female-led Black buddy comedy.
Is One of Them Days worth watching?
That depends on what you want from a comedy. If the priority is the interaction between two charismatic leads, One of Them Days has an obvious advantage. Palmer brings her established comic timing to Dreux, while SZA’s Alyssa provides a contrasting energy that helps create the film’s central friction. The friendship—not just the money problem—is the reason the escalating situations have emotional stakes.
The trade-off is structure. Rotten Tomatoes’ critical summary highlights the leads’ chemistry and comic energy, but also notes that the story can feel like a chain of skit-like episodes connected by a relatively simple plot. That is a fair guide to the viewing experience: audiences who want a sequence of big comic situations may find the format appealing, while viewers seeking a carefully engineered, realistic narrative may find it uneven.

- THIS TRENDS 24X36 STAR WARS: REVENGE OF THE SITH - ONE SHEET uses high-resolution artwork and is printed on premium FSC-Certified Gloss Poster Paper
- HIGH QUALITY ART PRINT is ready-to-frame or can be hung on the wall using poster mounts, clips, push pins, or thumb tacks
- OFFICIALLY LICENSED wall poster
- PERFECT SIZE for any room; poster is 24" x 36"
- EASILY DECORATE any space to create the perfect decor for a party, bedroom, bathroom, kids room, living room, office, dorm, and more
The film’s themes give the chaos more substance than a simple series of gags. It considers friendship under financial pressure, the limits of roommate dependence, the danger of allowing a partner’s decisions to affect someone else’s housing, and the conflict between pursuing a personal opportunity and solving an immediate survival problem. It also offers mainstream representation of Black female friendship without making the rent crisis a solemn social drama.
What to know before watching
- Rating: R.
- Language: Strong and frequent language.
- Sexual content: Sexual references and sexual material.
- Drugs: Brief drug use, including marijuana-related material.
- Violence: Slapstick danger, threats, shootings, and physical peril presented in a comic rather than realistic dramatic tone.
- Family viewing: This is not a family-friendly recommendation. The R rating and content make it better suited to adults and mature viewers.

Music from the film
Apple Music lists One Of Them Days (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack), credited to composer Chanda Dancy, as a 2025 soundtrack album. That confirms a digital soundtrack listing, but the available research does not establish a CD or vinyl edition. Do not assume that a physical soundtrack is available simply because the album appears digitally.

Who will enjoy it?
One of Them Days is a good fit for viewers looking for:
- a female-led buddy comedy;
- a Keke Palmer performance or an acting vehicle for SZA;
- a contemporary comedy centered on Black female friendship;
- a single-day story driven by an urgent deadline;
- broad set pieces, escalating problems, and R-rated humor.
It is a weaker match for viewers expecting a documentary, a family comedy, a grounded housing drama, or a tightly plotted thriller. The film uses financial precarity as the setup for comic escalation, not as a documentary-style examination of eviction or the rental market.
Bottom line
One of Them Days is a fast-moving, R-rated friendship comedy whose biggest strength is the pairing of Keke Palmer and SZA. Its rent-crisis premise supplies a clear deadline and plenty of comic pressure, while the friendship between Dreux and Alyssa gives the escalating situations an emotional center. Expect broad, episodic comedy rather than documentary realism or an intricate plot. For viewing, check current digital rental and purchase listings; for ownership, the confirmed Blu-ray and DVD release offers the most direct physical-media option.
