You can still get the essential old-school radio experience—live DJs, scheduled shows, local news, weather, call-ins, commercials and unexpected songs—without buying a radio or paying for a subscription. Internet-radio apps stream real stations to a phone, tablet, browser, smart speaker or, where supported, a car system.
They are not all the same. Some are enormous station directories, some focus on U.S. commercial broadcasting, and others are designed for discovering stations around the world. All require an internet connection, and “free” can mean advertising, geographic restrictions or a limited catalog rather than unlimited, ad-free listening.
What counts as old-school radio?
For this guide, old-school radio means live, linear broadcasting: a station controls the schedule, with hosts, news breaks, traffic, sports, commercials and music selected for the audience in real time. You listen without choosing every song.
Podcasts, on-demand playlists, Spotify-style artist radio and algorithmic music streams can be useful alternatives, but they are not the same as a live station simulcast. Internet radio can also lag behind an over-the-air signal, substitute music because of licensing, or omit some local programming.

1. TuneIn: the best general starting point
TuneIn is the broadest recommendation when you want one app for live music, talk, news, sports and international stations. Its homepage advertises live sports, music, news, audiobooks, podcasts and station search, and says the service works across hundreds of home, car and portable devices, including Alexa and Google Home.
TuneIn’s service page advertises access to more than 100,000 global radio stations and podcasts. That is the company’s stated total, not a guarantee that every listing is active or playable in your country.
What is free?
The TuneIn Premium page displayed a $0.00-per-month free tier on August 18, 2026. The same page showed Premium at $9.99 per month or $79.99 per year after a seven-day trial, with prices and terms subject to country, platform and billing channel. Premium adds or changes access to selected sports, news, music and audiobook content and can reduce certain advertising; ordinary free radio does not become universally ad-free.

- You also want podcasts, sports or news in the same app.
- You listen on several devices and value broad platform support.
The trade-off is directory clutter, advertising and occasional station-rights differences.
2. iHeartRadio: the natural fit for U.S. commercial radio
iHeartRadio is the strongest match for listeners seeking iHeart-owned music and talk stations, familiar U.S. formats, artist radio and podcasts. Its official listening page describes free access through the website, mobile app, Apple TV and smart speakers.
Coverage is more U.S.-centric than TuneIn or myTuner. The supplied URL currently redirects to an iHeart Australia page, dated January 25, 2023, so do not assume that every U.S. feature, station or plan is available in every country. Check your local app-store listing and station page.

myTuner Radio presents itself as free internet radio and podcasts, with browsing by country, region and genre. Its categories include oldies, 80s, 90s, classic hits, classic rock, talk, local, news and world music.
This structure suits someone who remembers a format more readily than a call sign: select a country, open a classic-rock or oldies category, and sample stations. The underlying stream still belongs to each station, so audio quality, uptime, local content and advertising can vary considerably.

- You are searching by decade, format or region.
- You enjoy comparing how different countries program similar genres.
4. Radio Garden: spin the globe and listen
Radio Garden is built around a globe: move around the map, select a location and hear a station associated with it. That makes it the closest of these choices to turning a dial and discovering something unexpected in another city or country.
It is better for exploration than for guaranteed access to one particular local station. Stations can disappear, go offline or change stream providers. The public page depends heavily on JavaScript, so interface labels and device behavior can change; use the current web or app version rather than relying on an old tutorial.

Choose it if
- You want geographic discovery and international serendipity.
- You are less concerned with building a precise, permanent station list.
5. Simple Radio: the least complicated workflow
Simple Radio is positioned as a straightforward way to find and play familiar stations, with less emphasis on browsing a giant catalog. That can appeal to listeners who want to save a few dependable stations and start listening quickly.

Current platform availability, advertising, account requirements and subscription terms should be checked in the relevant app store before installing. The official site did not establish those details in the available material, so treat Simple Radio as the simplicity-first option rather than a fully verified feature comparison.
How to find and save a live station
- Install the app from your device’s official app store, or open its official web player.
- Allow notifications only if you want program alerts; location access is not automatically necessary for playback.
- Search by call sign, station name, city, frequency, format or country.
- Open the result and confirm that it is labeled live or currently streaming.
- Tap Play and wait several seconds for buffering or an ad to finish.
- Add the station to Favorites, Presets or your library.
- Test it on both Wi-Fi and cellular data.
- Lock the screen to confirm that background playback works on your device.
- Turn off unwanted autoplay and notification permissions in the app or phone settings.
- If the listing fails, try the station’s own website and its “Listen Live” player.
When a station is missing or will not play
- Search the call letters instead of the station’s marketing name.
- Try the city plus frequency, such as “Boston 103.3.”
- Open the broadcaster’s official website and look for a web player.
- Try a second directory; licensing and stream partnerships differ.
- Check whether the station broadcasts online only during terrestrial broadcast hours.
- Look for a changed stream URL or a temporary outage.
- Disable a VPN if the stream is region-blocked.
- Switch to Wi-Fi when cellular playback buffers.
- Update the app, force-close it and reopen it.
- If an account prompt appears, check whether guest listening is available.
Data, offline listening and local coverage
Live radio continuously consumes data. The amount depends on bitrate, codec, audio-quality setting and listening time, so there is no honest single megabytes-per-hour figure for all five apps. Use Wi-Fi for long sessions, choose a lower quality setting where available, and check your phone’s per-app cellular-data monitor.
Live streaming normally does not work offline. Downloaded podcasts are not offline live radio, and a phone needs an actual broadcast tuner to receive AM/FM without internet access.

Accounts, privacy and subscriptions
Before signing up, check whether the app requires an account, requests location access, sends notifications, uses personalized advertising or synchronizes favorites. Review background-data settings and confirm that deleting an app does not leave a subscription active. Free trials can convert to paid plans, and app-store prices may differ from web prices.
Which app should you choose?
- Choose TuneIn for the broadest all-purpose directory and the widest mix of live radio extras.
- Choose iHeartRadio for U.S. commercial stations, especially iHeart-owned outlets.

None of these apps recreates every detail of a physical receiver: internet access, advertising, licensing and stream reliability still matter. But each can deliver the central old-school experience—turning on a live station and letting someone else decide what comes next.
