When OBS starts dropping frames as soon as you record and stream at the same time, first check View > Stats and identify which counter is rising. Network-dropped frames point to the connection; frames missed due to rendering lag point to scene rendering or GPU capacity; frames skipped due to encoding lag point to the encoder workload. Each needs a different fix—lowering bitrate will not solve every kind of slowdown.
Identify which kind of frames OBS is losing
Open View > Stats while the problem is happening. For a fuller diagnosis, save an OBS log after reproducing the issue and note when recording starts and when the counter begins to rise. OBS separates connection trouble from performance trouble in its Stream Connection Troubleshooting and Encoding Performance Troubleshooting guides.
| OBS symptom | What it points to | Start here |
|---|---|---|
| Network dropped frames | The connection to YouTube’s ingest server cannot sustain a stable stream at the configured bitrate. | Check upload stability and the network path; test a lower stream bitrate. |
| Frames missed due to rendering lag | OBS is not rendering/compositing frames on time, often because the GPU is overloaded or constrained by another system bottleneck. | Free GPU capacity and reduce scene or output workload. |
| Frames skipped due to encoding lag, or “encoding overloaded” | The encoder cannot finish frames in time. CPU or GPU resources may be limiting, depending on the encoder. | Inspect both output encoders and reduce encoding workload or use supported hardware encoding. |
Before changing settings, record the stream resolution, frame rate and bitrate; the recording encoder and quality setting; and whether the symptom begins only after recording starts. A log, those settings, your hardware, operating system and network measurements are needed to identify a particular system’s exact bottleneck.
Fix rendering lag first when its counter rises
Rendering lag is not a connection-speed problem. Reduce the load on the GPU and on OBS’s scene renderer, then repeat the same workload to see whether the counter stays stable.

Free GPU capacity
- If you are gaming, cap the game’s frame rate or use V-Sync, and lower demanding graphics settings. An uncapped game can consume the GPU capacity OBS needs to render the scene.
- Close other GPU-heavy programs you recognize and do not need during the stream.
- On Windows, OBS lists Run as Administrator as a quick option to help with GPU overload. This is Windows-specific, not a general fix for network or encoding problems.
Reduce the rendering workload
- Temporarily disable expensive filters and simplify complex scenes to find out whether a source or effect is contributing.
- Reduce or resize browser sources and avoid unnecessarily high-resolution media.
- Test a lower output resolution or frame rate. OBS notes that frame rate affects rendering and encoding, and suggests trying 30 fps if 60 fps fails.
Changing the base canvas can require repositioning sources, so leave it alone unless resources are severely constrained. Change one factor at a time where practical; otherwise you may not know which change helped.
Fix encoding overload when its counter rises
Recording and streaming can use separate output encoders, so inspect both configurations rather than assuming the stream encoder alone is at fault. Note whether encoding lag begins only when the recording starts.

Choose an encoder the system supports
OBS generally recommends hardware encoding for performance because it uses specialized hardware rather than doing all encoding work on the CPU. Availability and behavior vary by operating system and hardware, and older hardware encoders can produce lower image quality. Switching to a hardware encoder is not guaranteed to help if the GPU is already saturated with rendering work. See OBS’s Hardware Encoding guidance for the relevant platform and hardware.
Reduce recording demands
If the encoder is overloaded, test a less demanding preset or quality workload and prioritize a stable output. OBS’s Advanced Recording Settings Guide, dated 2023-11-30, describes starting points—not guaranteed performance fixes. It generally recommends Simple output mode for ease of use. Its Advanced-mode recording baselines are:

| Encoder | Guide’s baseline |
|---|---|
| NVENC | Constant QP 16–23; P5; High Quality tuning; two-pass quarter-resolution multipass; look-ahead off. |
| x264 | CRF 16–23; “veryfast” CPU preset. |
| AMD | CQP 16–23; Quality preset. |
In that guide, a lower quality-number setting means higher quality and a larger file. If your current settings overload the machine, stability matters more than matching a baseline. Changing recording quality can also affect file size and the quality you retain locally.
Fix network-dropped frames when the connection counter rises
OBS describes network-dropped frames as a failure to sustain a stable connection to the remote ingest server at the configured bitrate. Check the network branch only when that counter rises; a cable or bitrate change does not address rendering lag or encoder overload.

Check capacity and connection stability
- Check that the available upload capacity is stable while the stream and recording are running. OBS suggests using 75% of total upload speed as a starting heuristic, not a guarantee; real connection stability and other network use matter.
- If the stream is on Wi-Fi, test Ethernet. OBS’s 2024-09-30 guide says, “WiFi may be unstable for streaming,” and recommends a wired connection. If you are already wired, check whether the cable or other network hardware may be faulty before buying replacements.
- Try a lower stream bitrate if the connection cannot reliably sustain the current one. Dynamic bitrate adjustment can reduce video quality and may keep output moving, but it does not fix the underlying network problem.
Check possible network-path causes
OBS also identifies VPNs, security software, network “optimization” utilities, outdated network drivers, router or modem problems, and faulty cables or devices as possible factors. Test changes carefully and restore security protections after troubleshooting; do not disable security software as a permanent workaround.
Match the stream to YouTube’s requirements
Use YouTube’s current live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions page for the codec, resolution and frame rate you actually select. YouTube lists RTMP/RTMPS, H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 video, up to 60 fps, CBR, AAC or MP3 audio, and a recommended two-second keyframe frequency that should not exceed four seconds. Its bitrate recommendations vary by codec, resolution and frame rate, so select the matching current recommendation rather than treating one bitrate as universal. The page does not display a publication date.

Test the combined workload before going live
A fix is only useful if it holds when the recording and stream run together under the conditions that caused the problem.
- Use the same game or other workload, scene collection, stream bitrate and recording mode that normally trigger the issue.
- Include audio and movement in the pre-stream test. YouTube recommends testing in conditions similar to the planned stream and monitoring stream health during the event.
- Watch OBS Stats as recording starts and runs. If a different counter rises after the change, return to the corresponding diagnostic branch instead of continuing to adjust unrelated settings.
Common fixes that do not match the symptom
- Lowering bitrate when rendering lag rises: bitrate affects the network stream, not OBS’s ability to render scenes. Address GPU and scene workload for rendering lag.
- Buying Ethernet hardware for encoding overload: wired networking is relevant to network instability, not a slow encoder.
- Switching to a GPU encoder without checking GPU load: hardware encoding may reduce CPU work, but it may not help when GPU rendering is already the bottleneck.
- Changing several settings at once: this makes it difficult to identify the cause and can trade away quality unnecessarily. Change the settings tied to the rising counter and test again.
