If OBS reports network dropped frames, your connection to YouTube’s ingest server may be unstable or unable to sustain the selected bitrate. That does not, on its own, prove BSNL is at fault—and a high jitter reading alone cannot diagnose the cause. First separate network drops from encoding or rendering lag, then test a wired connection and a lower bitrate while monitoring OBS and YouTube stream health.
What OBS dropped frames mean—and what they do not
OBS defines dropped frames as a connection to the remote server that is unstable or cannot keep up with the configured bitrate. If enough frames are dropped, the stream may disconnect. This points to the network path or bitrate, but it does not identify which part of that path is responsible. OBS’s connection troubleshooting guide covers network drops.
Check the OBS Stats window and distinguish network dropped frames from rendering lag and encoding lag. The latter two indicate different performance problems; calling every kind of OBS lag an ISP issue can send troubleshooting in the wrong direction. Note the time the network drops start, their percentage, and the bitrate shown in OBS.
Check upload stability in a controlled test
1. Compare Wi-Fi with Ethernet
If the streaming computer is on Wi-Fi, connect it to the router by Ethernet and repeat a private test stream using the same YouTube ingest setup. OBS recommends trying a wired connection when Wi-Fi may be unstable. If drops ease on Ethernet, the wireless link or its local conditions may be contributing; this does not establish that the BSNL line is trouble-free in every respect.

If you do not have an Ethernet cable, borrowing or obtaining one is optional and useful only for this comparison. It isolates the local wireless link; it is not a guaranteed fix or a reason to replace the router before testing.
2. Lower the bitrate and repeat
OBS suggests starting at 75% of total upload speed when choosing a video bitrate. Treat that as a starting point, not a guarantee: the relevant figure is upload capacity that remains stable during the stream, and the chosen rate must also fit YouTube’s limits. A speed test is a snapshot, not proof of sustained capacity for a whole broadcast.
Reduce OBS’s video bitrate until it is comfortably below what your connection can sustain, then repeat the test. Compare results at similar times and with the same ingest setup. YouTube also recommends testing upload bitrate and choosing stream quality according to the connection.

3. Test realistic content and monitor YouTube
Use a private or otherwise non-public test before an event. Include movement and audio similar to the planned stream; a static image is not a representative test of a moving documentary or live presentation. During the test, monitor YouTube Studio’s stream health and read any messages YouTube displays. YouTube’s live encoder settings guidance advises testing before going live.
Check encoder settings against stable upload capacity
YouTube’s currently published recommendations include the following H.264 and AV1/H.265 rates. They are platform recommendations, not evidence that a particular BSNL connection can sustain them. Match the row to your resolution, frame rate, and codec, then choose a rate your connection can hold steadily.
| Video setup | H.264 recommended bitrate | AV1/H.265 recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p at 60 fps | 17 Mbps | 12 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 14 Mbps | 10 Mbps |
YouTube’s encoder guidance lists RTMP and RTMPS protocols, H.264, H.265, and AV1 video codecs, CBR bitrate encoding, and a recommended keyframe frequency of two seconds, not exceeding four seconds. It recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport. These recommendations can change, so check YouTube’s settings page when configuring a stream.

Do not raise bitrate simply because a short speed test looks fast. If the selected rate exceeds sustained upload capacity, the stream can drop frames even when an occasional speed test reports a higher number. Conversely, a low bitrate alone does not prove the connection is stable; compare OBS’s network-drop counter and YouTube’s stream-health messages during the actual test.
Is jitter the reason your BSNL stream drops?
Jitter describes variation in packet delay. It can be useful context alongside packet loss, latency, sustained upload throughput, and OBS’s log, but neither OBS nor YouTube specifies a universal jitter threshold that predicts dropped frames in an OBS-to-YouTube stream. Do not treat one jitter figure as a pass/fail test.

The 2025 Uttar Pradesh East report also varies by site: its BSNL sample at Government Polytechnic Unnao lists 5.27 Mbps average upload throughput, 7.03 ms jitter, and 0.30% packet loss. At Kanpur Airport, BSNL entries include 10.39 Mbps upload throughput and 100% packet loss, with the report noting failed YouTube and ping tests for the relevant table. These are sampled mobile results, not a diagnosis of an individual broadband connection. See the TRAI Uttar Pradesh East report.
Your own line, service area, router, and route to YouTube’s ingest endpoint have not been tested by those reports. The useful question is whether your upload remains stable during your stream and whether the OBS network-drop counter changes when you alter one variable at a time.

- VPN: Temporarily test without it, if you can do so safely and without violating a work or network policy. VPN routing can contribute to connection problems.
- Security or network utilities: Check whether security software, bundled network software, or network-priority and “optimizer” utilities are interfering. Do not disable protection indiscriminately; use a controlled test and restore settings afterward.
- Network drivers and hardware: Check for outdated network drivers, modem/router connectivity problems, or faulty network hardware. If you suspect a faulty device and are unsure how to test it, OBS recommends contacting your ISP rather than buying replacement equipment on guesswork.
- Bind to IP: OBS recommends leaving this at its default setting. As a diagnostic change, OBS suggests trying IPv4-only; if it does not help, restore IPv4 and IPv6.
- Windows-only options: OBS network optimizations and TCP pacing options are Windows-only. They are not universal settings for every computer or operating system.
Change one item at a time and repeat a comparable test so you can tell whether it affected network drops. Trying another ingest server or service can help determine whether the issue is destination-specific, but changing destinations is a diagnostic comparison, not a guaranteed cure.

Adaptive bitrate: a fallback, not a repair
OBS offers “Dynamically change bitrate to manage congestion (Beta)”, which lowers bitrate when the connection cannot keep up. It can help a stream remain connected during congestion, but OBS says it does not fix the underlying cause and may reduce video quality. Use it as a workaround, not as proof that the line is stable.
What to send BSNL if the evidence points beyond your setup
If controlled tests still show network drops, give BSNL specific observations rather than only saying that the stream is bad. Include:
- The date and exact times drops occurred, with time zone.
- The OBS log and the percentage of network dropped frames, distinguishing them from rendering or encoding lag.
- Your selected video bitrate, resolution, frame rate, and codec.
- Upload measurements taken during or close to the problem, and whether the test was over Ethernet or Wi-Fi.
- Whether lowering bitrate changed the result, and whether another YouTube ingest server or service changed it.
That evidence helps separate a local wireless or software issue from a line, routing, or destination-specific problem. OBS recommends contacting the ISP with details when its troubleshooting steps do not resolve connection issues.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is to keep a pre-recorded YouTube stream running 24/7 rather than troubleshoot an OBS session on your own computer, StreamNeo runs the uploaded video from the cloud. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on.
