If your YouTube stream has video but no sound, trace the audio path in order: confirm the source has audio, verify MediaLive extracts the intended track, check that an output audio encode maps to that selector, then confirm YouTube is receiving the right output and protocol. The symptom alone does not identify the cause.
Find where the audio disappears
Compare the source, MediaLive configuration, and YouTube Live Control Room preview before changing settings. This separates a missing source signal from an extraction or output-mapping problem—and from an issue after YouTube receives the stream.

Check the MediaLive input and selector
In the channel’s input attachment, inspect the audio selectors and confirm they point to the audio asset present in that input. Depending on the input type, that may mean selecting a PID or language. AWS describes RTMP as carrying a single audio asset, while HLS and other multi-track inputs may require more specific selection. See AWS’s audio-selector guidance.
For a channel with multiple inputs, compare the selector setup on every attachment. AWS says the channel must extract the same audio languages from each input and use identical selector names across inputs. If sound fails only when the channel switches to a particular source, focus on that input’s available tracks and its selector mapping.

Verify the output audio encode and mapping
Open the relevant output and verify that it includes an audio encode and that the encode uses the selector intended for the input. A valid video encode does not establish that audio is selected or sent.
For its documented MediaLive-to-YouTube HLS example, AWS configures an HLS output group, selects Audio 1 in Stream settings, and chooses AAC. The example was published on 14 April 2021; use it as a configuration example, not as a guarantee that labels or available options in your current console are identical. Match the output to YouTube’s ingest setup
Confirm that the MediaLive output group and protocol match the ingest workflow configured in YouTube Live Control Room. Also verify that the destination and stream key are the ones intended for this broadcast. YouTube’s encoder guidance instructs broadcasters to configure their encoder with YouTube’s stream URL and key: Set up your encoder for live streaming.
Do not apply an HLS-specific audio configuration blindly to an RTMP workflow. The supported audio formats vary by protocol and channel configuration. Establish which protocol the channel is actually sending before changing codec settings.

Apply the relevant YouTube audio format requirements
For AWS’s documented HLS-to-YouTube example, audio is AAC in an MPEG-2 transport stream. That is guidance for the described HLS setup, not a universal setting for every MediaLive output protocol.
If—and only if—you intend to send 5.1 surround sound, YouTube lists AAC for RTMP and AAC, AC-3, or E-AC-3 for HLS. Its 5.1 guidance specifies 48 kHz and 384 Kbps, and says YouTube supports mono, stereo, and 5.1 configurations. These 5.1-specific figures are not general stereo requirements. Troubleshoot by symptom
- No sound at the source: Resolve the upstream audio feed first. For Elemental Link, check signal lock and
EncoderRunning; a zero metric indicates the encoder is not processing the input. AWS monitoring guidance. - Source has sound, but YouTube preview does not: Check the input attachment’s selector, then confirm the output contains an audio encode mapped to that selector. Recheck the output group and codec against the chosen ingest protocol.
- Audio works on one input but not another: Inspect the tracks and selector mapping for each attachment. For multiple inputs, AWS requires the same audio languages to be extracted with identical selector names. AWS audio-selector guidance.
- YouTube preview has sound, but viewers hear silence: Avoid changing the MediaLive channel until you have checked player mute, the viewer device’s output selection and volume, and the playback path.
- Only 5.1 output is affected: Confirm the encoder output uses a YouTube-supported format for its protocol and the specified 5.1 sample rate and bitrate. Do not impose these surround-sound settings on a stereo stream. YouTube’s 5.1 guidance.
Information to collect if the problem persists
Before escalating, record the input type, whether the source itself is audible, the channel’s audio selector and output mapping, the output protocol, and whether YouTube’s live preview has sound. These details identify which part of the path is failing; without them, the symptom does not establish a single root cause.
