Choose OBS Studio if you want to build and operate a stream through a graphical interface; choose FFmpeg if you prefer a command-line workflow with explicit, scriptable controls. Both can loop a podcast archive and send it to YouTube Live. The available documentation does not establish that either is inherently more reliable or faster for every computer and network.
How OBS and FFmpeg differ for a podcast archive
| Consideration | OBS Studio | FFmpeg |
|---|---|---|
| How you work | Graphical software for capturing, composing, encoding, recording, and streaming. It suits a workflow where you want to arrange media and other visual elements in a scene. | A command-line tool whose options let you specify inputs and outputs directly. It suits a workflow you want to configure or script explicitly. |
| Looping a local archive | Add the recording as a local-file media source and enable its Loop control. | Use -stream_loop -1 to loop an input indefinitely. |
| What the documentation establishes | The interface provides a media source and loop control; this alone does not guarantee a stream will stay up indefinitely. | The documented option requests infinite input looping; this alone does not guarantee a stream will stay up indefinitely. |
OBS describes itself as software for capture, composition, encoding, recording, and streaming. FFmpeg exposes input and output controls through its command-line documentation. The choice is about workflow and control, not a documented universal winner for performance or uptime.
Choose the workflow that fits how you produce the stream
Use OBS when visual composition matters
OBS is the more approachable fit if you want to see and arrange your stream in a graphical interface. Add the podcast recording as a local-file media source, enable Loop, and build a scene if you want a visual layout around the audio. OBS is suitable for a creator who prefers to manage sources and composition through the application rather than a command line.
Use FFmpeg when you want explicit, scriptable control
FFmpeg is a fit if you are comfortable specifying the input, looping behavior, encoding choices, and streaming output in a command. Its documentation defines -stream_loop -1 as infinite looping of an input. The option concerns the input loop; it does not prove the complete process will recover after a machine, network, or YouTube connection failure.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Set up either encoder for YouTube Live
- Prepare the YouTube live stream. Follow YouTube’s encoder workflow in YouTube Studio and obtain the stream server URL and stream key. The encoder needs both to connect. Keep the stream key private.
- Configure the archive as the input. In OBS, add a local-file media source and enable Loop. In FFmpeg, use
-stream_loop -1for an indefinitely repeated input. - Set the encoder output to match YouTube’s ingest guidance. YouTube’s current RTMP/RTMPS guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video, up to 60 fps, AAC or MP3 audio, constant bitrate encoding, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport. See YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate guidance.
- Choose a bitrate your upload can sustain. For H.264, YouTube recommends 14 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps, 8 Mbps for 720p at 30 fps, and 4 Mbps for 480p at 30 fps. These are starting recommendations, not guarantees for a particular connection. YouTube advises testing the connection and choosing a quality it can reliably support.
- Enter the YouTube connection details. In the encoder, provide YouTube’s server URL and stream key. Use the current stream details shown in YouTube Studio rather than reusing or sharing a key casually. YouTube’s setup instructions are at Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
- Test before relying on the continuous stream. YouTube Help says, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” Test with audio and movement similar to the planned stream, then monitor stream health. A looping input is not a substitute for checking the outgoing connection.
Plan for a stream that runs continuously
Looping the file handles repeated playback, but it does not by itself provide automatic recovery from every failure. The cited OBS and FFmpeg documentation does not establish a general restart or uninterrupted-operation guarantee. A computer running either encoder must remain available, and its internet connection must be able to sustain the chosen output. The sources reviewed do not establish a minimum computer specification or benchmark for a particular archive, so do not assume you need to buy a new machine if you already have suitable hardware.
There is also an archiving limit to account for: YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived when the encoder stops. Its cited guidance does not promise automatic archiving for a stream exceeding 12 hours. If you need an archive of a long-running broadcast, check the current controls and options in YouTube Studio rather than assuming a 24/7 stream will produce one automatically. See YouTube’s encoder setup guidance.

Troubleshoot the common failure points
- YouTube does not receive the stream: Check that the server URL and stream key entered in the encoder match the live stream details in YouTube Studio.
- The stream is unstable or unhealthy: Check the upload connection and lower the output quality or bitrate if the connection cannot sustain the chosen settings. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring stream health.
- The recording does not repeat: In OBS, confirm Loop is enabled on the local-file media source. In FFmpeg, confirm the input uses
-stream_loop -1. - The stream stops after a computer or network interruption: A loop setting does not itself restart a stopped encoder or restore a lost connection. The cited documentation does not establish automatic recovery for these setups; check the encoder and YouTube stream status and restart the workflow if needed.
- A long broadcast is not automatically archived: YouTube’s stated automatic archive rule applies to streams under 12 hours. For longer streams, review YouTube Studio’s current options and make a separate recording if you need a dependable local copy.
Or let it run in the cloud
