Neither playlist method, by itself, schedules a specific clip to start at a particular clock time. YouTube’s scheduled broadcast is a separate setting from the local playlist that supplies its video.
First, distinguish the three kinds of scheduling
- Playlist rotation: Play multiple clips in order or shuffle them, and optionally repeat the list. OBS with VLC and FFmpeg’s concat demuxer can handle sequential playback.
- YouTube broadcast scheduling: Create a live event in YouTube Studio, set its start time and configure the encoder connection. This does not choose or rotate the local files being played.
- Scheduling an individual clip: Starting clip B at 3 p.m. requires an additional automation or scheduling layer. The documented OBS playlist controls and FFmpeg concat demuxer do not establish that capability on their own.
YouTube’s API describes a broadcast as “an event that can be watched on YouTube as it happens.” It distinguishes that event from the stream resource used to transmit audio and video. A channel can bind multiple broadcasts to one stream resource or use a separate resource for each broadcast. See YouTube Live Streaming API documentation.
Which method should you choose?
| What matters | OBS Studio with VLC Video | FFmpeg |
|---|---|---|
| Best fit | A visual setup with playlist and scene controls. | A command-line or scripted workflow. |
| Playlist setup | Add a VLC Video source and configure its media items in the OBS interface. | Write a concat list and pass it to FFmpeg’s concat demuxer. |
| Repeat and order | Loop Playlist repeats the playlist; leave Shuffle off to preserve order. | The demuxer sequences the list. A long-running or repeated workflow needs additional command-line handling. |
| Important compatibility requirement | VLC must be installed, with its architecture matching OBS; use 64-bit VLC with 64-bit OBS. | Inputs need matching streams, including codecs and time bases. Incorrect duration metadata can cause artifacts or gaps. |
| Clip-at-a-time scheduling | Not specified by the documented playlist controls. | Not provided by the documented concat demuxer, which sequences a list. |
| YouTube event and connection | Configure the broadcast in YouTube and connect the encoder separately. | Configure the broadcast in YouTube and provide FFmpeg the ingest endpoint and stream key separately. |
These are workflow differences, not results of a head-to-head reliability or performance test. OBS’s media-source guidance is at OBS Media Sources. FFmpeg documents its input and output options, concat demuxer and related constraints in the FFmpeg documentation.
Set up a playlist rotation in OBS
For one repeating documentary
- In OBS, add a Media Source to the scene and select the video file.
- Enable Loop in that source’s properties. This repeats one file; it is not a multi-file playlist.
For several clips in a fixed order
- Install VLC. If you use 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC.
- In OBS, add a VLC Video source to the scene.
- Add the media files to that source’s playlist in the order you want them played.
- Enable Loop Playlist to repeat the full list. Leave Shuffle off if the order matters.
- Preview the scene and confirm that each item plays and the list advances as expected before connecting the broadcast.
The VLC source handles local playback. It does not set YouTube’s video quality, create a scheduled broadcast, or provide documented clock-time selection for individual clips. See the OBS source documentation for media-source controls.

Schedule the YouTube broadcast separately
- In YouTube Studio, create or select a live broadcast and set its scheduled start time if you want an upcoming event page.
- In the Live Control Room, follow YouTube’s current encoder-connection workflow. YouTube’s interface labels may change.
- Connect OBS or FFmpeg using the server URL and stream key supplied for the broadcast, or an available YouTube connection option in the encoder.
- Start the encoder output and confirm the incoming video in YouTube’s live controls. Scheduling the event alone does not start the local playlist or select a clip.
YouTube’s encoder instructions explain the server URL and stream key in Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
Build a playlist input with FFmpeg
Prepare compatible files
FFmpeg’s concat demuxer reads a text list and sequences the listed files as though their packets had been muxed together. It is useful when avoiding a re-encode, but the inputs must have compatible stream layouts, codecs and time bases. Check duration metadata too: incorrect durations can produce gaps or artifacts.

Create the concat list
Make a plain-text file listing each media file in the desired order, using the concat demuxer’s file-list syntax. For example, the structure is:
file 'clip-01.mp4'
file 'clip-02.mp4'
file 'clip-03.mp4'
Use paths that resolve from the command’s working directory, or provide full paths. Consult the FFmpeg concat demuxer documentation for syntax, safety options and duration directives. Duration directives can be relevant when file duration metadata is inaccurate.

Choose the concat demuxer or filter
Use the concat demuxer when the files can be treated as a compatible sequence and you want to avoid re-encoding. If files differ materially and need normalization, FFmpeg’s FAQ recommends the concat filter when re-encoding is needed. That entails a different processing workflow; do not assume an arbitrary mix of files can be joined cleanly without conversion. See the FFmpeg FAQ.
Connect FFmpeg to YouTube
Use the ingest server URL and stream key from the YouTube broadcast when configuring FFmpeg’s output. FFmpeg’s options apply to the input or output that follows them, so option order matters. The FFmpeg documentation covers command structure and option placement; YouTube’s encoder guide covers the broadcast connection. The official guidance describes the component mechanisms and constraints, not a guaranteed, turnkey 24/7 YouTube rotation command.

If a clip must start at a particular time
Neither OBS’s documented playlist properties nor the concat demuxer is a wall-clock clip scheduler. Add a separate automation layer that can select or switch the relevant source at the required time, then test its behavior with your OBS scene or FFmpeg workflow. Specify what should happen if the preceding clip runs long, the stream reconnects, or the computer restarts. Do not treat YouTube’s scheduled broadcast start time as a schedule for individual clips.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Keep local playlists separate from YouTube’s ingest protocol
The playlist in OBS/VLC or FFmpeg is a list of local media files. YouTube’s HLS and RTMP options concern how the encoder sends the live output; choosing an ingest protocol does not add playlist rotation. YouTube says HLS has higher latency than RTMP and specifies additional HLS requirements, including TS segments of 1–4 seconds and a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments. Follow YouTube’s HLS setup guidance if you choose HLS.

Troubleshoot common playlist problems
OBS does not show or play the VLC playlist
- Check that VLC is installed and matches OBS’s architecture; for 64-bit OBS, use 64-bit VLC.
- Confirm the files are accessible and added to the VLC Video source, rather than a single-file Media Source.
- Check that Loop Playlist is enabled if the complete list should repeat, and that Shuffle is off if order matters.
FFmpeg reports errors or playback has gaps
- Check that the listed paths resolve and that each file is readable.
- Compare stream layouts, codecs and time bases across inputs; the concat demuxer expects compatible streams.
- Check duration metadata. Incorrect durations can lead to artifacts or gaps; consult FFmpeg’s concat documentation about duration directives.
- If the files need normalization, consider the concat filter and re-encoding rather than expecting the demuxer to reconcile incompatible media.
- Review option order: FFmpeg options generally apply to the next input or output.
YouTube does not receive the encoder output
- Verify that you are using the server URL and stream key for the selected broadcast, and that the encoder is sending output.
- Use YouTube’s current Live Control Room workflow to check the incoming feed; creating or scheduling an event does not itself connect the encoder.
A particular clip does not start at the intended time
Sequential rotation is not wall-clock scheduling. Check the separate automation layer responsible for selecting the clip and test what it does when playback duration or stream state changes.
