A continuous audio-video feed still needs an encoder or playout system. First decide whether you want to schedule separate YouTube live events or change the content inside one continuous event; those are different jobs.
Choose what you mean by “schedule a 24/7 stream playlist”
A YouTube live broadcast and the stream feeding it are separate resources. Google for Developers’ Understanding Broadcasts and Streams documentation describes a broadcast as a distinct event and video, and a stream as the audio-video feed sent to YouTube. The YouTube Live Streaming API can manage those resources and their association; it does not provide the video playout itself.
- Schedule separate events: Create distinct broadcasts with their own scheduled start times, titles, privacy settings, and viewer-facing upcoming listings. Sheets can hold that event schedule, and Apps Script can help automate API operations.
- Keep one event live while changing playlist items: The encoder or playout system must manage the actual content changes and deliver a continuous feed. The reviewed official documentation does not provide a ready-made Sheets-and-Apps-Script implementation for switching playlist items inside one broadcast.
YouTube documents reusing one stream for different broadcasts at different times, and also describes a 24/7 feed continuing while a separate interview broadcast is made live on the same stream. A stream can be bound to up to three live broadcasts. That resource pattern does not make Sheets a video player.
Plan the parts before building
| Component | Its job |
|---|---|
| Google Sheet | Stores the event schedule or playlist-related data in rows that an operator or script can review. |
| Apps Script | Reads and validates rows, then runs scheduled logic or makes authorized API requests. It is not a persistent video process. |
| YouTube Live Streaming API | Creates and manages broadcast and stream resources, binds them, and transitions a broadcast between states. |
| Encoder or playout system | Produces and transmits the audio-video feed to YouTube using the server URL and stream key. |
Before writing automation, specify whether each Sheet row represents a YouTube event or an item in a media playlist. Those are not interchangeable records: the API workflow manages broadcasts and feeds, while the playout system determines what video and audio reach the feed and when.

Set up a Sheet that is safe to automate
For scheduled broadcasts, use one row per event. Keep the values your script needs explicit and consistent rather than embedding several events in one cell. A practical starting layout is:
| Column | Purpose |
|---|---|
| Event ID | A stable identifier your script can use to avoid creating the same event twice. |
| Title | The broadcast title to send to YouTube. |
| Scheduled start | The planned start date and time. Choose a consistent time zone and validate it before sending it to the API. |
| Privacy status | The intended broadcast privacy setting. |
| Status | Your automation’s tracking value, such as pending, created, bound, or needs attention. |
| Broadcast ID and stream ID | The resource identifiers returned by YouTube, recorded so later runs can update or inspect the same resources. |
| Last result | A brief success or error record that helps an operator investigate a failed run. |
If your Sheet is instead a content playlist, its rows need to describe media and playout order for the separate encoder or playout system. The API steps below will not switch those media items for you.
Automate broadcast setup with the YouTube API
Google’s Live Streaming API implementation guide describes this resource workflow. Your Apps Script must be authorized to make the relevant API requests, and the channel and project behavior should be tested before relying on the automation. This is a workflow outline, not a tested, copy-and-run script.

Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- Read the schedule: Use the Apps Script Spreadsheet service to read the selected rectangular range as a two-dimensional array. Validate required fields, date and time values, and privacy status before making requests. Skip rows already recorded as completed, and retain returned resource IDs so retries do not blindly create duplicates.
- Create a broadcast: Call
liveBroadcasts.insertwith the event title, scheduled start time, and privacy status. The broadcast guide identifies these as required event details. - Create a stream: Create a
liveStreamresource with its title and CDN transmission settings, including ingestion type, resolution, and frame rate. The actual encoder still needs the corresponding ingest details to transmit the feed. - Bind the resources: Call
liveBroadcasts.bindto associate the broadcast with the stream. - Start or test at the appropriate time: Use
liveBroadcasts.transitionto move the event into testing or live state when the channel and feed are ready. The API can also list upcoming broadcasts, which can help the script reconcile its Sheet with YouTube. - Record the outcome: Save the YouTube resource IDs and the result in the row. If an operation fails, record the error and leave the row recoverable for inspection rather than marking it as successful.
Choose testing and start behavior deliberately
YouTube’s broadcast guide recommends enabling the monitor stream and disabling auto-start when you want a testing phase. Auto-start and auto-stop can simplify operation: with those options enabled, YouTube starts after feed transmission begins and ends about a minute after transmission stops. Decide which behavior fits the encoder and operator workflow; do not treat a scheduled Sheet row as proof that a usable feed has arrived.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsBroadcast metadata can be updated, but scheduled start and end time changes have state constraints. Check the current API rules for the broadcast’s state before building a rescheduling routine, and have the script report when an update cannot be applied instead of silently changing its local status.
Use Apps Script triggers for administration, not video timing
Google’s Installable Triggers documentation says time-driven triggers can run as often as every minute. That does not make them a precise playlist clock. Google may randomize the selected run time slightly: a recurring 9 AM trigger, for example, may be assigned a time within the following hour and continue at that timing. Use triggers to check rows, prepare or reconcile event resources, and alert an operator—not to promise frame-accurate transitions between videos.

- Installable triggers run as the Google account that created them, even when another editor uses the Sheet. Use an account with the access the automation needs and document who owns the trigger.
- Script executions and API requests do not themselves cause installable triggers to run. A script that writes a status cell should not assume that doing so starts another trigger.
- Google’s current Apps Script quota documentation lists different daily trigger-runtime and URL Fetch allowances for consumer and Workspace accounts, a six-minute maximum execution time, and a cap on triggers per user per script. Google says limits can change without notice, so check the current limits for the account you use.
- Design for batching, idempotent operations, error logging, and recovery. A trigger is a short-lived scheduler for work, not a permanently running service.
Set up the feed and protect the stream key
The encoder or playout system is responsible for sending the video and audio. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions say to enter the server URL and stream key into the encoder; creators using audio/video hardware should set it up with encoder software. Match the encoder’s transmission settings to the stream configuration you created. The API materials establish that resolution and frame rate are stream settings, but they do not prescribe a playlist-switching configuration or a universal bitrate and keyframe recipe for every encoder and stream.
Treat the stream key as a credential: do not put it in a broadly shared Sheet or expose it in logs. YouTube says channel owners or managers can reset a key in Live Control Room. If a key is reset, update the encoder or playout system with the replacement before expecting it to send the feed.

Use YouTube Studio when you do not need API automation
For a small number of scheduled events, YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room is the simpler route. You can schedule a stream there, reuse prior settings or create new ones, and manage privacy, stream-key, and metadata settings in the platform interface. Scheduled streams may appear as upcoming in subscriber feeds, where viewers can choose “Notify me.” You still need an encoder or playout system to send the feed.
| Approach | Best suited to | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube Studio scheduling | A creator scheduling a small number of events who wants to use the platform interface and its upcoming-stream controls. | Event administration is largely manual. |
| Sheets, Apps Script, and the YouTube API | An operator with a structured schedule who wants to automate broadcast metadata and state operations. | Requires API authorization, trigger maintenance, quota handling, and a separate reliable feed. Trigger timing is not a precise playback scheduler. |
Troubleshoot common failures
- The broadcast exists, but viewers see no video: The broadcast resource is not the feed. Check that the encoder or playout system is transmitting to the correct server URL and stream key, and that the feed matches the stream settings.
- The script runs at an unexpected time: Time-driven triggers can have timing variance. Do not use them as exact media-playout clocks; move content switching to the playout system.
- A trigger runs with the wrong account’s access: Installable triggers execute as their creator. Check trigger ownership and the permissions granted to that account.
- A scheduled event is missing or duplicated: Compare the Sheet’s saved broadcast IDs and statuses with upcoming broadcasts from the API. Make retries safe by checking for an existing resource before creating another.
- A metadata or schedule update fails: Inspect the broadcast’s current state and the API’s state-specific rules, particularly for scheduled start or end changes. Record the error for an operator rather than treating the row as complete.
- The feed stops after a key change: Confirm that the encoder has the current key. Resetting the key in Live Control Room requires updating the sending system too.
- The script stops partway through processing rows: Apps Script has a six-minute maximum execution time. Process manageable batches, save progress, and resume safely on a later run.
Check channel and content readiness
Scheduling an event does not establish that its content is cleared for streaming or that it satisfies YouTube’s channel policies. Before putting a playlist on a continuous feed, review the rights for every recording and YouTube’s applicable copyright and reused-content requirements. Keep this separate from the technical question of whether a broadcast was created successfully.
For Indian channels, StreamNeo accepts UPI as well as cards in India; its worldwide card checkout is also available. Its free copyright safety checklist can help organize a review, but it does not grant rights or determine YouTube policy compliance.
