OBS vs FFmpeg for Looping Videos on YouTube Live

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose OBS if you want a visual production workspace with a preview, scenes, and interactive controls; choose FFmpeg if you want a repeatable command-line pipeline that loops and paces a file directly. Neither is established as universally more reliable: performance depends on the actual computer, source, encoder, and network. For either, follow YouTube’s current ingest guidance, test the full setup, and monitor stream health.

OBS or FFmpeg: which fits your workflow?

Decision OBS FFmpeg
Setup and control Visual settings, preview, scenes, and interactive start/stop controls suit a production you want to inspect and adjust. Command-line options and an output URL suit a defined pipeline you can run from a script or service.
Looping a file Add the recording as a media source and enable its loop control. Confirm the setting in your installed OBS version. Use -stream_loop -1 before the input’s -i option to loop that input indefinitely.
Real-time pacing OBS sends the stream through its configured encoder workflow. Use -re (equivalent to -readrate 1) before the input to read a file at its native frame rate.
Scenes and overlays Well suited to combining visible sources and changing scenes during a live production. Filters and stream mapping are controlled on the command line; useful for a fixed encode or relay pipeline.
Reliability and performance Must be evaluated with the actual system, sources, and network. Must be evaluated with the actual system, sources, and network. Available documentation does not provide a fair head-to-head benchmark.

These are workflow distinctions, not evidence that one option uses less CPU or runs longer without failure. The comparison here is based on official documentation, not a controlled test; no particular OS, hardware, software version, or stream duration is assumed.

What YouTube requires from the stream

YouTube recommends RTMPS, an encrypted extension of RTMP, for sending a live stream. Its current encoder guidance supports H.264, HEVC, or AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS, up to 60 fps, constant bitrate (CBR), and AAC or MP3 audio. YouTube recommends a 2-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed 4 seconds. See YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate guidance for the current resolution-specific bitrate table; the appropriate bitrate depends on the intended quality and available upload connection, and recommendations can change.

  • Use YouTube’s live page to confirm the bitrate for your chosen resolution and frame rate instead of relying on a detached number.
  • Protect the stream key like a password. It directs the encoder to your broadcast; do not publish it or include it in a public script or screenshot.
  • Test representative motion and audio, check continuity at the loop boundary, and monitor stream health messages while live.
  • For a scheduled event, connecting the encoder and making the event public may be separate actions. Confirm the current state in Live Control Room rather than assuming that starting the encoder has taken the broadcast live.

YouTube’s RTMPS guidance is at Use RTMPS to stream to YouTube.

Loop a video with FFmpeg

Build the command around the input

FFmpeg’s documented input options -re and -stream_loop belong before the corresponding -i. Output options belong before the output URL. This structural example shows the placement; it is not a complete tested command:

ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i input.mp4 [encoding and audio options] -f flv rtmps://.../live2/STREAM_KEY
  1. Replace input.mp4 with the path to the recording you want to loop.
  2. Choose encoding and audio options that match the source and YouTube’s current requirements: codec, pixel format, frame rate, bitrate, keyframe interval, and audio mapping.
  3. Replace the example output address with the RTMPS ingest address and stream key shown for your broadcast in YouTube Live Control Room. Keep the key private.
  4. Run a test and check both the encoder output and YouTube’s stream health before relying on the setup.

-stream_loop -1 means infinite input looping; -re reads the input at real-time pace. FFmpeg option behavior can vary by installed build, so check that build’s help output when deploying. Consult the FFmpeg documentation for option details and ordering.

Loop a video with OBS

  1. In OBS, select YouTube RTMPS as the service or connect your YouTube account, then configure the stream using the stream key or account connection. The broad OBS streaming guide describes the general workflow; use YouTube Help and the installed OBS interface for current operational details.
  2. Add the prerecorded video as a media source in the scene you intend to broadcast.
  3. Enable the media source’s loop setting, confirming the current control and behavior in your installed OBS version.
  4. Set and check the encoder output against YouTube’s current codec, bitrate, frame-rate, audio, and keyframe guidance.
  5. Preview the scene, listen to the audio, test the transition from the end of the video back to its beginning, and confirm the broadcast state in Live Control Room.

OBS’s YouTube guide is dated; treat it as a general workflow reference, not the authority for today’s settings. The installed interface and YouTube’s current guidance should determine the exact controls you use. Additional context on testing and stream health is in YouTube’s live streaming tips.

Check the loop and monitor the broadcast

  • At the loop point: Watch and listen across the end-to-start transition. Confirm that the picture and sound continue as intended rather than assuming the file boundary is seamless.
  • During a test: Use motion and audio representative of the planned broadcast. A still or silent test may not reveal problems that occur with the real content.
  • While live: Keep Live Control Room stream health and messages available. Starting OBS or FFmpeg does not by itself prove that YouTube is receiving a healthy stream or that a scheduled broadcast is public.
  • For long runs: Test the exact host, network, encoder, resolution, audio, and broadcast settings you plan to use. Documentation does not establish unattended reliability for either tool.

Common problems and practical checks

Symptom What to check
YouTube does not receive the encoder stream Confirm the RTMPS address and stream key in Live Control Room, that the key was entered correctly, and that it has not been exposed or replaced.
Encoder is connected, but the event is not public Check the event’s state and any go-live control in Live Control Room. Scheduled broadcast connection and public start can be separate steps.
Stream health reports an ingest or quality problem Compare codec, frame rate, CBR setting, keyframe interval, and selected bitrate with YouTube’s current guidance. Check that the upload connection can sustain the selected bitrate.
FFmpeg runs too quickly through the file Ensure -re is before the input’s -i, so real-time pacing applies to that input.
FFmpeg does not repeat the file Ensure -stream_loop -1 is before the relevant -i and that the intended file is that input.
OBS scene does not show or repeat the recording Check that the media source is in the active scene, that the correct file is selected, and that looping is enabled in the installed version’s controls.
Picture or sound jumps at the repeat point Inspect the source’s ending and beginning, then test the transition with the actual scene and audio routing before the broadcast.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is a prerecorded YouTube channel that stays live without leaving a computer running, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. It plays uploaded videos, not camera feeds, and streams to YouTube.
