Choose OBS if you need visual scenes and hands-on control; choose FFmpeg if you want a repeatable, scripted media pipeline. Neither is proven categorically more reliable for a 24/7 YouTube stream. Whichever you use, continuity depends on the source, host, power, network, monitoring, and recovery plan—not just the encoder.
OBS vs. FFmpeg: which fits your workflow?
| Need | Better fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Build or change visual scenes while operating the stream | OBS | OBS is a visual production application suited to scene-based, interactive work. |
| Run a repeatable media-processing pipeline from commands or scripts | FFmpeg | FFmpeg is a command-line media tool suited to scripted workflows. |
| Prove which one stays online longer | Neither on the available evidence | No controlled head-to-head evidence establishes comparative uptime, CPU use, reconnect behavior, or failure recovery. |
This is a workflow choice, not a reliability ranking. For either setup, plan how the video source is supplied, how the host and network stay available, how stream health is watched, and what you will do after a failure.
Configure the stream for YouTube
YouTube’s encoder guidance applies regardless of whether you send video from OBS or FFmpeg. Use the resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate your upload connection can sustain reliably; a higher setting is not useful if the connection cannot hold it.
- Ingest: Prefer RTMPS, YouTube’s secure extension to RTMP.
- Rate control: Use constant bitrate (CBR).
- Keyframes: Set a two-second interval; do not exceed four seconds.
- Frame rate: YouTube’s guidance allows up to 60 fps.
- Audio: YouTube lists AAC or MP3; for stereo it specifies 44.1 kHz sampling and 128 Kbps.
- SDR color: YouTube recommends Rec. 709.
H.264 bitrate examples
These YouTube-recommended figures are for H.264 only; do not apply them to AV1 or H.265. YouTube provides separate recommendations for those codecs.
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
| H.264 output | Minimum bitrate | Recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 720p30 | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
These are YouTube Help’s settings, not a promise that a particular internet connection can sustain them. If your upload fluctuates, select a lower reliable output and test it before relying on a continuous broadcast.
Start and monitor a YouTube encoder stream
- Create or open the stream in YouTube Live Control Room. Use the stream setup there to obtain the server URL and stream key.
- Configure OBS or FFmpeg with YouTube’s ingest details. Select RTMPS where available, then apply the codec, bitrate, frame rate, audio, and keyframe settings appropriate to your planned output.
- Keep the stream key private. Treat it as a credential: do not publish it in scripts, logs, screenshots, or source control.
- Send a representative test. YouTube recommends testing with audio and video movement similar to the real broadcast.
- Check the preview and stream health in Live Control Room. Continue monitoring during the broadcast rather than assuming that a successful start means the stream will remain healthy.
Google’s Live API documentation distinguishes a liveStream resource, which holds encoder connection settings, from a liveBroadcast, the event viewers watch. Its guide describes a 24/7 feed that can continue while another broadcast is started and ended; it says one stream may be bound to up to three live broadcasts. Ordinary streaming does not require using the API.

Plan for failures and long-running broadcasts
A continuous stream relies on more than the encoder: the media source must remain available, the computer or server must stay powered and responsive, and the internet connection must sustain the upload. Monitoring and a recovery procedure matter because the official material does not establish that either OBS or FFmpeg will automatically recover from every outage.
- Source stops: Check that the file or other input is still available and that the playback workflow has not ended.
- Host stops responding or loses power: The encoder cannot send video while its host is unavailable; consider how the host will be monitored and restarted.
- Upload becomes unstable: Reassess bitrate and output quality against the connection’s sustained capacity, then test again.
- YouTube reports a stream-health issue: Check the encoder output and ingest settings in Live Control Room before resuming.
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Its guidance does not establish that one stream lasting longer than 12 hours will produce a single complete archive, so do not assume that outcome for a 24/7 feed.

When HLS is relevant
RTMPS is the normal recommendation for an encoder stream. YouTube describes HLS ingest as an option for HDR or codecs unsupported by RTMP, and notes that HLS has higher latency because video is delivered in segments. YouTube lists OBS among encoders that support HLS output.
For HLS, YouTube specifies HTTPS POST/PUT, TS segments from one to four seconds, and a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments. The ultra-low-latency option is disabled for HLS. Use this route only when its codec or HDR support is needed and its latency trade-off suits the broadcast.

Copyright, monetization, and archive checks
Use only video and audio you have rights to stream. A live format does not remove copyright obligations, and YouTube’s channel-level rules still apply. YouTube’s encoder guide says live-stream monetization is available to channels in the YouTube Partner Program; check current eligibility and channel-specific conditions in YouTube guidance before relying on it.
