OBS vs FFmpeg for a 24/7 YouTube Stream Using Pre-Recorded Videos

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose OBS if you need a visual workspace for scenes, overlays, and source switching. Choose FFmpeg if you want a scriptable pipeline that loops or sequences files and publishes directly to YouTube. Neither is automatically more reliable: a 24/7 stream also needs tested media, process supervision, monitoring, and a plan for YouTube’s archive limit.

OBS or FFmpeg: which fits your workflow?

Need Better fit Why
Arrange scenes, overlays, or switch sources visually OBS Its production interface is designed for visual control and scene composition.
Loop or sequence files in a repeatable script FFmpeg It can process media and publish to an ingest endpoint from a command-line pipeline.
Change the broadcast visually while it runs OBS A visual interface is more suitable for hands-on source and scene changes.
Automate a media pipeline and manage it as a process FFmpeg It suits operators comfortable with command-line configuration and external process supervision.

This is a workflow distinction, not a reliability ranking. The reviewed official documentation does not establish uninterrupted 24/7 reliability for either encoder or provide a comparative uptime figure. Reconnect controls help, but they do not replace supervision, alerting, and testing on the actual machine and media.

Set YouTube’s ingest requirements first

Before configuring either encoder, open YouTube Studio’s live control room and obtain the stream URL and stream key. Enter them in the encoder’s streaming destination settings; YouTube’s encoder setup documentation describes this flow at YouTube Help: stream using an encoder. Treat the stream key as a password: do not publish it in scripts, logs, screenshots, or shared configuration files.

  • Enable live streaming ahead of time. YouTube says first-time live-stream enablement can take up to 24 hours.
  • Use RTMPS where supported. YouTube recommends RTMPS, the secure form of RTMP. Its current ingest guidance is at YouTube Help: encoder settings.
  • Use constant bitrate (CBR). YouTube recommends CBR and a two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds.
  • Select supported codecs. YouTube lists H.264, H.265, or AV1 video and AAC or MP3 audio for RTMP/RTMPS ingest.
  • Match bitrate to the output. For H.264, YouTube’s recommendations include 10 Mbps for 1080p30, 12 Mbps for 1080p60, 6 Mbps for 720p30, and 8 Mbps for 720p60. These are encoder recommendations, not guarantees that a particular internet connection can sustain the stream. YouTube lists separate recommendations for AV1 and H.265.
  • Test representative content. Include audio and motion like the material you will broadcast, then monitor YouTube’s stream-health indicators during the test.

OBS exposes bitrate, output resolution, frame rate, and reconnect settings in its output and stream configuration. The exact labels and locations can vary by version. Its official overview is at OBS: Streaming with OBS Studio. Do not choose 60 fps simply because it is available: OBS notes that 60 fps can tax the system more than 30 fps, so test the actual computer and workload.

Build the 24/7 workflow in OBS

  1. Enable YouTube live access and create the broadcast. In YouTube Studio’s live control room, create or select the stream and copy its stream URL and key. Allow for the possible first-time activation delay.
  2. Configure the YouTube destination in OBS. Open Settings > Stream, choose the YouTube service if available, and enter the stream key. If using a custom ingest destination, use the RTMPS URL and key supplied by YouTube. Keep the key private.
  3. Build a scene for the prerecorded program. Add the video source or sources you need, then arrange any overlays, titles, or other scene elements. OBS is useful here when the broadcast needs visual composition or operator-controlled changes.
  4. Set output and video parameters. In Settings > Output, configure streaming bitrate and encoder options; in Settings > Video, choose output resolution and frame rate. Use CBR, a two-second keyframe interval (never more than four seconds), supported codecs, and a bitrate appropriate to resolution and frame rate. Start with YouTube’s recommendations for the codec you select.
  5. Decide how media advances and repeats. Configure your sources and scenes for the desired sequence or loop, and verify the behavior at the end of every file. Exact playlist and looping controls depend on source type and OBS version; the reviewed official references do not establish one universal playlist procedure. Test the installed version rather than assuming a source will restart or advance as desired.
  6. Enable reconnect behavior and test it. OBS provides automatic reconnect controls. Configure them in the stream settings available in your installed version, then test a controlled interruption if practical. Reconnect is a recovery aid, not proof the entire 24/7 setup will recover from every failure.
  7. Start the stream and watch its health. Start streaming in OBS and confirm YouTube receives a healthy signal. Test with representative audio and movement, and watch for dropped frames, missing audio, or a stalled source.

Build the 24/7 workflow in FFmpeg

  1. Prepare the media sequence. Decide whether the program is one file repeated or a sequence of files. Validate the files, playback order, audio, and transitions before relying on them for a continuous broadcast.
  2. Get the ingest details from YouTube Studio. Copy the stream URL and key for the intended broadcast. Use the RTMPS endpoint where YouTube provides it, and protect the key as a credential.
  3. Choose a repeatable FFmpeg input and output pipeline. FFmpeg supports RTMP publishing syntax and RTMPS as RTMP over a secure SSL connection. Its protocol documentation explains publishing and protocol options at FFmpeg protocol documentation. Construct the input loop or sequencing logic for the installed FFmpeg build and direct the output to YouTube’s ingest URL with the key.
  4. Set the output deliberately. Configure a supported video and audio codec, output resolution, frame rate, CBR behavior, bitrate, and keyframe interval to match YouTube’s guidance. For example, YouTube’s H.264 recommendations are 10 Mbps at 1080p30 and 12 Mbps at 1080p60; select values for your actual target rather than copying a setting without checking the codec and frame rate.
  5. Supervise FFmpeg outside the publishing command. Run it under a process supervisor or equivalent service manager, capture logs, and alert an operator when the process exits or the stream becomes unhealthy. FFmpeg documents reconnect options for applicable network protocols, but an input-side HTTP reconnect option does not guarantee recovery from every RTMP publishing failure. Verify behavior for the output protocol and installed build, and test a controlled failure.
  6. Verify the result in YouTube Studio. Confirm the incoming signal, audio, motion, and stream health before treating the pipeline as production-ready. Re-test after changing media, FFmpeg versions, or output settings.

Plan for recovery, monitoring, and the 12-hour archive boundary

YouTube states that streams under 12 hours are automatically archived in its encoder setup guidance. A continuous 24/7 broadcast is longer than that stated boundary, so do not assume YouTube will create one complete automatic archive of the whole run. Plan separate recordings or another archive workflow if a full copy matters.

For either encoder, distinguish a reconnect from end-to-end resilience. A connection may recover while the encoder process, media source, audio, or YouTube signal still needs attention. Monitor the encoder and YouTube stream health, retain useful logs, and decide how an operator will learn about a failure. A long-running process by itself is not an uptime plan.

Common problems and practical fixes

  • YouTube shows no incoming signal: Check the selected broadcast, stream URL, key, and RTMPS configuration. Confirm live streaming is enabled for the channel and that the encoder is actually running.
  • The signal drops or will not reconnect: Check network stability, encoder logs, and YouTube stream health. Enable OBS reconnect controls or verify the applicable FFmpeg output behavior, then use external supervision and alerting rather than relying on a single reconnect setting.
  • Video stutters or frames drop: Check whether the chosen resolution, frame rate, and bitrate are sustainable on both the encoding machine and upload connection. Test at the intended settings with representative motion; if needed, reduce the workload and test again.
  • Audio is missing or out of sync: Check that the source contains audio, the selected audio codec is supported, and the correct audio source is included in the output. Verify with a representative test before leaving the stream unattended.
  • A video ends and the program goes blank: Verify the source’s end-of-file behavior and the sequence or looping logic in the installed OBS version or FFmpeg pipeline. Test across a complete cycle, including transitions between files.
  • A 24/7 archive is incomplete: YouTube’s stated automatic archive behavior applies to streams under 12 hours. Arrange a separate recording/archive strategy for a longer run.
