To enable it, extract the Windows ZIP and add an empty portable_mode file to the application folder, or launch OBS with --portable. This makes the configuration easier to move or isolate; it does not bundle scene media or make a stream reliable by itself. You still need to check YouTube eligibility, prepare media paths, automate startup deliberately, and monitor the broadcast.
What OBS portable mode changes
OBS describes portable mode as loading its configuration directory from the same path as the application, which can make it easier to relocate an installation or run separate OBS instances without mixing profiles and scene collections. The OBS Project’s documentation, published July 23, 2024, puts it this way: “Portable Mode loads the OBS configuration directory from the same path that the application is stored, allowing for easy relocation or running multiple instances without cross-contamination of profiles and scene collections.” OBS portable-mode documentation
Portable mode concerns OBS configuration, not a complete portable broadcast package. Scene collections can refer to images, videos, audio, and other files stored elsewhere. Those files are not copied into the portable configuration automatically, so a moved setup can lose media references unless the files remain available at the expected paths or you update the sources.
How to run OBS in portable mode on Windows
- Download and extract the Windows ZIP. Extract it to a folder you can manage, preferably outside
Program Files, where permissions can complicate saving configuration files. - Enable portable mode. In the OBS application root—the folder containing the OBS executable—create an empty file named
portable_modeorportable_mode.txt. Alternatively, runbin/64bit/obs64.exe --portablefrom the extracted folder. - Launch OBS and configure it. Set up your profile, scene collection, sources, and YouTube connection as usual. Keep the application folder in a location where the Windows account running OBS can write configuration changes.
- Confirm the configuration is stored with the instance. Close and reopen OBS from that same extracted installation and verify your profile and scenes are present. Keep this installation folder intact when backing up or moving the instance.

Keep media paths and backups under control
Scene media is separate
Portable mode does not guarantee that referenced media travels with OBS. If a scene uses a file from a Downloads folder, removable drive, network share, or another machine-specific location, OBS may not find it after relocation. Store media in a stable location and keep that location available, or edit the affected source paths after moving the setup. Test every scene, including less frequently used documentary clips, stingers, and background audio.
Back up the parts that matter
Back up the portable OBS folder so you retain its local configuration, and separately back up or preserve the media files referenced by your scenes. A configuration backup without its media can restore the scene layout but still leave sources missing. A copy of the media alone does not preserve OBS profiles and scene collections.
Can OBS automatically start streaming?
OBS supports launch parameters including --portable (also -p) and --startstreaming. It also documents --profile, --collection, and --scene to select a profile, scene collection, and scene when OBS launches. These options can help make a launch repeatable; for example, a shortcut can specify the portable instance and the intended profile. Consult the OBS launch-parameters reference for syntax and supported options.

--startstreaming requests that OBS start a stream when it launches, but it is not a complete unattended-operation system. OBS’s launch-parameter documentation does not describe a watchdog, guaranteed Windows restart recovery, or a complete reconnection plan. Test your actual startup and recovery sequence rather than assuming a launch flag handles crashes, power loss, network interruptions, or YouTube ending a broadcast.
Choose a PC for the actual OBS workload
OBS’s published basic Windows requirements list Windows 10 or Windows 11 and a DirectX 10.1-compatible GPU. OBS warns that meeting those basic requirements does not guarantee that a computer can stream or record adequately. CPU needs vary with the encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity; sources, filters, and connected devices also shape the setup you need. OBS does not establish a universal minimum CPU or RAM amount for this use case.
Run OBS’s Tools → Auto-Configuration Wizard on the machine you plan to use, then test with the intended scenes and stream settings. The wizard can help find settings for that hardware, but your own representative test remains important for a continuous channel. See OBS system requirements.

Prepare YouTube before the first broadcast
Check channel eligibility well before scheduling the stream. YouTube says live streaming must be enabled, the channel must be verified, and the channel must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. Its general live-stream setup page says users must be at least 16 years old. YouTube notes that first-time live-stream activation can take up to 24 hours, so do not leave activation until just before the planned broadcast. Review YouTube’s live-streaming setup requirements and encoder setup instructions.
For a stream that uses pre-recorded documentary footage, confirm you have the necessary rights to the video, music, narration, and other material. A continuous broadcast does not remove copyright obligations or guarantee that YouTube will accept a channel’s content under its policies. Review YouTube’s current rules for the content and monetization decisions relevant to your channel.

YouTube’s encoder guidance is written for live-stream operation, not as a guarantee of uninterrupted 24/7 service. Its recommendations still provide useful checks for a dedicated setup: YouTube’s live-streaming tips advise setting up at least two hours before an event and starting the encoder at least 15 minutes before its scheduled time. For a continuous channel, adapt those checks to your launch and restart procedures rather than treating those timings as proof of reliability.

- Check the Live Control Room preview before relying on the public stream.
- Verify that any local archive file is growing if you are recording locally.
- Confirm that the event is accessible from the channel or watch page and on mobile.
- Continuously monitor audio and video quality, and check again after changes or interruptions.
- When ending an event, stop the encoder after the event has stopped on YouTube.
For 24/7 operation, assign a person or monitoring process to notice a frozen picture, silent audio, an ended event, or a lost network connection. Portable mode stores configuration with the application; it does not perform these checks or ensure recovery.

OBS opens without the expected scenes or profile
Confirm you launched the extracted portable installation rather than another OBS copy, and check that the portable marker file is in the application root. Reopen the same executable and verify the selected profile and scene collection.
Images, clips, or audio show as missing
The scene collection refers to media at paths that are unavailable on this PC or have changed. Restore access to the original paths or edit the source paths in OBS, then test playback in each affected scene.

OBS launches but does not start the stream
Check the exact executable and launch arguments, confirm that the intended profile and scene collection load, and make sure the YouTube stream is configured and the channel is eligible. Test the launch manually and inspect the Live Control Room preview. The launch parameter is not a substitute for resolving setup or account problems.
The stream ends or quality degrades after unattended operation
Portable mode does not prevent a PC, encoder, network, or YouTube-side interruption. Check the broadcast status and preview, local archive growth if enabled, and audio/video quality. Establish how someone will be alerted and how the stream will be restarted; OBS’s documented launch parameters alone do not supply a full watchdog or guaranteed recovery plan.
