To keep an OBS stream stable on BSNL broadband, set your bitrate from the upload speed the connection can sustain at the streaming location—not the plan’s advertised download speed. Keep about 20% upload headroom, use YouTube’s recommended CBR and a two-second keyframe interval, then test the complete setup and watch OBS and YouTube’s stream-health indicators. No OBS profile can guarantee a nonstop stream over a variable connection.
Choose settings from your stable upload speed
First measure upload speed on the BSNL connection where the stream will run, preferably with the streaming computer connected to the router or ONT by Ethernet. Test at representative times and account for other devices using the connection. A single speed test is not proof that the route to YouTube’s ingest server will sustain the same rate.
YouTube recommends leaving 20% of available upload bandwidth unused. As a practical ceiling, keep the combined stream bitrate—video plus audio—at or below about 80% of the stable upload available to the stream. If your upload varies, begin lower. OBS separately suggests using 75% of total upload speed as a bitrate starting point when troubleshooting; that is a rule of thumb, not a guarantee. Example: if repeated, representative tests show 5 Mbps of stable upload available to the stream, 80% is 4 Mbps for the combined stream bitrate. This is arithmetic based on the measured connection, not a claim about BSNL service or a promise of stability.

Match resolution and frame rate to the budget
YouTube’s H.264 live-stream recommendations give the following video bitrate ranges. These are platform recommendations, not the upload speed your BSNL line provides; leave room for audio and the recommended upload headroom.

If your measured upload budget cannot accommodate a chosen profile, reduce the video bitrate and, if necessary, use a lower resolution or frame rate. A 720p profile is a sensible fallback to test before 1080p, but the measured line and observed stability determine whether it will work. YouTube’s live encoder settings include these ranges.

Set up OBS for YouTube
- Open the streaming controls. In OBS, go to Settings > Output and set Output Mode to Advanced if you need separate streaming controls.
- Set the encoder and rate control. For the broadly compatible SDR profile covered here, choose H.264 and set rate control to CBR.
- Set the keyframe interval. Use 2 seconds. YouTube recommends two seconds and says not to exceed four seconds.
- Choose the video output. Use progressive video at the intended frame rate. Set resolution and video bitrate only after checking the stable upload budget and YouTube’s ranges above.
- Set SDR color and audio. For SDR, YouTube lists Rec. 709 and 8-bit. AAC is suitable for audio; YouTube lists 128 Kbps for stereo.
- Connect OBS to YouTube. In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and use its stream key in OBS’s stream settings. Treat the key as a password: do not publish or share it. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio before streaming again.
Check the current YouTube encoder settings when configuring a stream, since YouTube’s recommended settings are platform guidance and can change.
Test before relying on the stream
- Start a private or unlisted test stream through the same OBS scene, resolution, frame rate, audio setup, and network connection you plan to use.
- Let it run long enough to exercise representative motion, audio, and network conditions rather than testing only a static screen.
- Confirm that YouTube’s Live Control Room detects the incoming stream, then monitor its stream-health indicators.
- Watch OBS’s dropped-frame counter and statistics. If the test shows instability, adjust settings and repeat the test before making the stream public.
YouTube transcodes live streams to provide playback options, but that does not repair an unstable incoming feed. A speed test or a detected stream by itself is not evidence that a long broadcast will remain stable. See YouTube’s live-streaming guidance.

Troubleshoot dropped frames and buffering
OBS reports dropped frames
OBS says dropped frames generally mean the connection to the remote server is unstable or cannot keep up with the selected bitrate. Lower the video bitrate first, then run another representative test. If the chosen YouTube ingest server appears unstable, try another available ingest server. The OBS troubleshooting guide also recommends checking whether a VPN, firewall or security program, or bundled network software is interfering with OBS. Diagnose cautiously, restore security protections, and add an OBS application exception if appropriate.
Consider OBS’s dynamic bitrate option carefully
OBS provides Dynamically change bitrate to manage congestion under Settings > Advanced > Network. It can lower bitrate instead of dropping frames when congestion occurs, but it does not fix the underlying connection and picture quality can fall. Treat it as a fallback, not a replacement for a suitable stable upload budget. OBS documents the option and its trade-off.

Separate network trouble from encoding trouble
Check OBS statistics and system load as well as the dropped-frame counter. Network drops and an overloaded encoder are different problems; identify which is occurring before changing hardware or buying an encoder. The figures here do not establish a particular PC or encoder requirement.
Viewers report buffering, but OBS shows no dropped frames
Buffering can occur on a viewer’s side even when OBS does not show dropped frames. A lower bitrate may still make playback work for more viewers, but first distinguish reports of viewer-side buffering from problems in the incoming stream. What BSNL plan details can—and cannot—tell you
BSNL offers multiple broadband services, and availability and plans vary by circle. The retrieved Chennai Telephones FTTH plan sheet, updated 2025-10-01, labels its rates as download speeds and includes FUP examples. It does not establish an individual subscriber’s upload speed or a nationwide upstream commitment. Check your own current plan and measure sustained upload where you stream. BSNL’s portal presents Bharat Fiber and other services; availability depends on location.
BSNL’s published Wi-Fi terms say uninterrupted service is not warranted and list technical, network, power, or maintenance issues among possible causes of interruption. Those terms concern Wi-Fi service; they should not be read as terms for every Bharat Fiber plan.
Reduce local connection and power variables
- Ethernet: Connecting the streaming PC to the router or ONT by cable can remove Wi-Fi variability from the test. It cannot increase the upstream capacity BSNL supplies.
- UPS: If local power interruption is the concern, a UPS for the router or ONT—and possibly the streaming PC—may help keep that equipment powered. Select capacity and runtime for the equipment attached. A UPS cannot prevent a provider-side network outage or guarantee an uninterrupted stream.
Neither measure substitutes for testing the connection to YouTube. The OBS connection guide covers network troubleshooting; the BSNL Wi-Fi terms identify possible service interruptions.
