Dune: Prophecy puts court intrigue at the center of a story about the order that will become the Bene Gesserit. Its first reviews found plenty of political scheming and striking craft, but differed on whether the series matches the films’ scale, makes its dense lore easy to follow, or gets strange enough to satisfy Dune readers.
What is Dune: Prophecy about?
The HBO series is a prequel focused on the fledgling Bene Gesserit. TheWrap’s Chase Hutchinson places its story 10,148 years before Paul Atreides’ birth and identifies Sisterhood of Dune, by Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson, as its source novel. The book is optional background, not a prerequisite for watching.
The series premiered on HBO on November 17, 2024, according to Rotten Tomatoes’ roundup; that historical date does not establish where the show is currently available to stream.
Why did critics compare it to Game of Thrones?
The comparison is chiefly about power: rival factions, court maneuvering, betrayal, and people trying to shape who rules. It is not a claim that the shows tell the same kind of story. In the Rotten Tomatoes roundup, Mashable’s Belen Edwards called it “the closest TV has gotten to the idea of ‘Game of Thrones… in space!’” Hutchinson likewise emphasizes scheming and power struggles in his favorable review for TheWrap.

That political engine is a major draw, but the opening also has a lot to establish. Rotten Tomatoes’ collection of first-episode reactions notes that some critics found the many characters and plotlines crowded, with slow pacing and exposition that can make the setup feel overfull. The Hollywood Reporter’s Daniel Fienberg, quoted in the roundup, said the lore could feel “a bit tangly.”
What did the first reviews praise—and criticize?
| Element | What reviewers said |
|---|---|
| Performances | Critics in the Rotten Tomatoes roundup singled out the cast and lead performances as a strength. |
| Production and visuals | The roundup records praise for cinematic visuals and production design. Hutchinson found the series distinct from the films, while noting a more limited visual sweep and occasional stageiness; some other critics judged its overall scale below the Villeneuve films. |
| Politics and pacing | The scheming and struggle for power appealed to critics, but some found the start slow and the number of plot threads and characters excessive. |
| Strangeness and horror | Some reviewers welcomed its strange visions and horror elements. Others felt it stopped short of the full strangeness of the books. |
| Accessibility | Critics differed on how clearly newcomers could follow the lore and exposition. Readers familiar with the novels may recognize more names and references, but the roundup does not suggest that prior reading is required. |
Those contrasts explain the cautious enthusiasm in the early response: the show can feel like a compelling political epic while still asking viewers to absorb a dense world and a large cast. The first-episode reactions collected by Rotten Tomatoes and Hutchinson’s season review are not unanimous on how smoothly it achieves that balance.

Is “but weirder” an accurate description?
It captures one strand of the response, not a consensus. The Rotten Tomatoes roundup reports praise for unsettling visions and horror touches, alongside the view that the show may not go as far into Dune’s strangeness as the books do. “Weirder” is therefore best read as a point of comparison with the familiar political-drama label, rather than a promise that every critic found the series genuinely bizarre.

The early critical picture is of a political prequel with strong performances, carefully realized production, and a hook in the origins of the Bene Gesserit. Its main tradeoffs are a potentially knotty introduction to the lore and a visual scale some critics found smaller than the films. The Game of Thrones comparison is useful for understanding its power struggles; it does not settle whether the series’ pacing, worldbuilding, or strangeness will work for every viewer.
