For a 24/7 YouTube playlist stream, start with H.264 over RTMPS, CBR, and a 2-second keyframe interval. Choose bitrate according to your resolution and frame rate, then make sure your connection can sustain it with YouTube’s recommended 20% upload headroom. There is no single bitrate for India: your reliable upload capacity depends on your ISP, location, shared network traffic, and time of day.
Recommended OBS settings for a YouTube playlist
For a straightforward SDR broadcast, use YouTube’s current live encoder settings as the starting point. The figures below are YouTube’s recommended H.264 video bitrates for RTMP/RTMPS, not a guarantee that a particular Indian connection or computer can sustain them.
| Output resolution and frame rate | Recommended H.264 bitrate | When to choose it |
|---|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps | A conservative starting point for lower-motion playlists or limited upload capacity. |
| 720p at 60 fps | 8 Mbps | For content where smoother motion matters and the connection can sustain the higher rate. |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 10 Mbps | For a sharper stream when the source and upload connection support it. |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 17 Mbps | For detailed, high-motion material with sufficient sustained upload capacity. |
For a basic playlist with little motion, 30 fps and a lower bitrate can be a reasonable starting point, but test the actual videos before relying on it. YouTube transcodes incoming live streams for playback formats, so you do not need to encode separate viewer resolutions yourself.
Encoder and video settings
- Video encoder: H.264 (AVC) is the straightforward choice for the bitrate recommendations above.
- Rate control: CBR, or constant bitrate.
- Keyframe interval: 2 seconds; do not exceed 4 seconds.
- Color space and depth: For ordinary SDR, use Rec. 709 and 8-bit depth.
- Resolution and frame rate: Select the output you can sustain reliably. The largest resolution or frame-rate option is not automatically best for an unattended stream.
YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport. HDR uses a distinct HLS workflow and is outside this ordinary playlist setup; do not select an HDR workflow unless you specifically need to configure one.

- Sample rate: 44.1 kHz stereo.
Choose a bitrate your Indian connection can hold
Bitrate is not only a video-quality setting. The stream’s total bitrate must fit within your available upload bandwidth, and YouTube recommends leaving 20% headroom. Measure upload speed on the same connection you will use to broadcast, then account for household, office, or other network traffic competing for it. A speed-test result is a snapshot, not proof that the connection will remain stable all day.
- Run an upload speed test on the actual streaming connection and at a time when you expect the channel to be live.
- Compare the result with the total stream bitrate, including audio, and leave at least YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom.
- If upload speed varies, select a lower resolution, frame rate, or bitrate than the peak result appears to allow.
- Where available, connect the streaming computer to the router by Ethernet and avoid unnecessary traffic on the same network. YouTube’s guidance is to use a reliable network with sufficient outbound capacity.
For example, a 1080p30 H.264 target of 10 Mbps needs more than 10 Mbps of stable available upload once audio and headroom are considered. If your connection cannot reliably provide that margin, use a lower setting rather than hoping a brief peak will hold. ISP performance, local congestion, and power conditions vary; these recommendations are not India-wide ISP test results.

Configure OBS and connect it to YouTube
OBS labels can vary by version and platform, so match the settings by function if the wording differs. YouTube’s setup guidance is available in its live streaming setup instructions.
- Enable YouTube live streaming early. A first-time enablement may take up to 24 hours, so complete account setup before the planned broadcast.
- Create or prepare the live stream in YouTube Studio. Open the event’s Live Control Room and obtain the stream key. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it, show it in a screen recording, or share it with anyone who should not control the stream.
- Set the OBS stream destination. In OBS, open Settings > Stream, choose YouTube as the service, and connect the account or enter the stream key. If configuring a server manually, use the ingest details provided by YouTube and choose RTMPS where available.
- Set output encoding. In Settings > Output, select the streaming encoder, H.264, CBR, and the bitrate appropriate to your chosen resolution and frame rate. Set the keyframe interval to 2 seconds.
- Set video output. In Settings > Video, choose a canvas and output resolution that suit the source and computer, then set the frame rate to 30 or 60 fps as appropriate. Use Rec. 709 and 8-bit for ordinary SDR output.
- Set audio output. Use AAC or MP3, stereo, 128 Kbps, and a 44.1 kHz sample rate for the YouTube RTMP/RTMPS recommendation.
- Build the playlist scene. Add the video files or media source arrangement you intend to loop, verify the order, and confirm that audio is present. Watch enough of the playlist to check transitions, silence, frozen frames, and unexpected end behavior.
- Start a test stream and inspect YouTube. Check the Live Control Room preview, stream health, and any warnings before making the event public or leaving it unattended.
Test continuity, archives, and monitoring before going unattended
A continuous broadcast is not the same as a continuous replay archive. YouTube warns that a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured by its automatic archive system; its archive guidance says, “If your stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all.” YouTube’s live DVR guidance also warns that rewind may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours.

- If preserving replays or DVR rewind matters, plan to end and restart sessions before they pass 12 hours, and keep a local recording as a backup. Do not assume YouTube will preserve a full 24-hour VOD.
- Check that the local recording file exists and that its size is growing. Estimate required disk space from the actual recording bitrate and intended recording duration; there is no universal drive-size figure without those settings.
- Test with audio and video movement similar to the real playlist, not only a static test screen. Check the preview, stream health messages, and whether viewers can access the event.
- Arrange a person or monitoring method to notice encoder stoppage, network failure, playback errors, and low storage. A UPS is an optional way to help ride through a brief power interruption affecting the PC or router, not a YouTube or OBS requirement.
YouTube’s streaming tips put the risk plainly: “A disruption on your connectivity could mean a broken stream.” Set up ahead of time and verify the local archive file if you are recording.

Being able to watch a video on YouTube, owning a copy of a recording, or having permission to upload it as an ordinary video does not by itself establish that you may rebroadcast it continuously as a live stream. For licensed third-party content, YouTube’s copyright guidance says to ask the owner to add your channel to their Content ID allowlist.

- Check whether other devices or applications are using upload bandwidth.
- Try another YouTube ingest server if OBS or the service offers that option.
- Check whether a VPN, firewall, security suite, or bundled network software is interfering.
- OBS documents dynamic bitrate adjustment, which can lower bitrate during congestion. It may reduce frame drops, but image quality will fall and the setting does not fix the underlying connection.
Some advanced network controls in OBS are Windows-only. Consult the OBS connection troubleshooting guide for the relevant controls and version-specific details.
OBS is live, but YouTube shows no video or reports an error
- Recheck the selected service, ingest server, and stream key. If the key was exposed, replace it in YouTube and update OBS.
- Confirm the event is configured and ready in YouTube Studio, then inspect the Live Control Room preview and its messages.
- Verify that the scene is displaying the intended media and that the file is still playing rather than paused, ended, or unavailable.
- If this is the channel’s first live broadcast, allow for the possible account enablement delay of up to 24 hours.
The video plays but audio is missing or distorted
- Check that the playlist source’s audio is routed to the active OBS output and that its meter moves during playback.
- Confirm the output uses a supported AAC or MP3 codec, stereo audio, and the recommended 128 Kbps and 44.1 kHz sample rate.
- Listen to the YouTube preview during a test; a moving OBS meter alone does not confirm the viewer-side stream sounds right.
The stream ends, or a replay is missing
- Check OBS, computer, network, and power status to identify whether the encoder stopped or the connection failed.
- Review YouTube stream-health messages for connection or content interruptions.
- If the stream exceeded 12 hours, automatic archiving may not have captured it; plan shorter sessions and local recording when replay matters.
The stream is interrupted by a copyright placeholder or termination
Remove or replace the disputed material and verify live-stream rights with the relevant rights holder. If third-party content is licensed, ask the owner to allowlist the channel in Content ID; possession of a file or ordinary upload permission is not enough to assume continuous live rights.
